Read this in 2 days (with 3 bio kids and 2 fosters ages 1, 3, 3, 6, 9). This shows you how badly I needed to hear these words. We started our journey to become foster parents 17 months ago. On the day we received our license, we also got our first placement. It has been a crazy, wonderful, messy 22 days. I know very few people who foster. There is no support group. Everyone expects you should be loving this.. and dealing with it all, as you are the one who "signed up for it." I wanted to read something that made me feel normal. I needed to hear someone else's story. I love this book. I love the honesty and realness. I told my husband it is so crazy how a book can make you feel "not so alone." There are others like me. Thank you so much for each person who contributed to this book. And thanks for all you are doing to love these kiddos.
I found the stories to be poorly written, but of some quality information. I also found it to be overly religious. The first story had so much scripture, "His will" "He..." and such that I had to skip it. Also, she says "I remember being angry with God in a way I cannot even explain. How could he let us go through this again? Why were we being placed with children that became available for adoption only to have no peace about adopting them?... Our desire to adopt was so strong." Her desire to adopt was so strong in fact that she had multiple babies in her house that came up for adoption that she decided that none of them were "God's plan" for her. I just couldn't read any more of her whining. In the next story, A mom with 8 kids was to receive a 9th baby, and called the foster home this baby was at repeatedly and demanded that she be delivered to her immediately. Her rudeness was shocking - I was embarrassed for her. In many of the other stories the foster parents felt like the bio parents were the enemy, and it made me sad. No wonder birth parents are so defensive! There were a small handful of good stories and one that described an amazing relationship with a birth family and co parenting that I appreciated. Overall, I felt this book was a waste of money, but it gave me something to read for a couple days.
Awesome stories of life's events in foster parenting. I foster patented briefly with my ex husband. I thought we were going into it as a team with already 2 kids of our own to find out I was on my own when it came to caring for the kids so I did not do it for as long as I would have liked cause I couldn't do it on my own. As a remarried woman, my children now grown, my new husband and I talk of doing it to open our hearts and home to children who need a place to call home with some stability even if only for a short time. We have slot of love to offer.
I think I would have given it a 5 if it had some male perspective...Both me and my husband read it and he felt the men were not represented yet husbands do contribute/participate and help. But overall it was well written, easy to read, and good to see a variety of scenarios from placement process to different types of traumas/severity to adoption and challenges with kin stepping up/ disappointments, as well as kin changing their mind and giving up the child/children again, court issues/numerous court hearings for foster care.
I really liked and appreciated this book. As someone who is considering being a foster/adoptive parent, I've been trying to read as much as I can. This book is just first-hand accounts of different experiences with foster care. Each story and experience is different, and I just liked hearing the first-hand accounts as it gave me a glimpse into this life. It's not really a "how to" or a help book on how to foster, but more just a sharing of experiences.Thank you to the authors for sharing your story.
Some of these stories are very relatable, being in foster care myself. I think there's 3 stories in this book I just couldn't finish. These stories had poor writing and worse story telling skills. Other stories really grab hold of you and bring you tears. I do recommend this book to other foster families just so they know they aren't along on this Roller Coaster.
I need to read stories from other foster families to reaffirm that I'm on the right path and that I'm not crazy! When I speak to people about foster parenting I always try not to sugarcoat anything so if people choose to go down this road it's with eyes wide open. I've always said foster care is a rollercoaster ride so this book is aptly named!
This is the sweetest book. I would love to foster kids but my health is not the best no more
