Yet, for many, this rings hollow--a single decision, clouded with emotion, mood music, and special lighting can give rise to a false conversion, where the "decision for Christ" is easily cast aside or forgotten, with no fellowship, no discipleship, and worst of all, no true repentance.This is not a new issue. In "Revival and Revivalism", Iain H. Murray looks at two very distinct types of movements. The first Revival, he cites simply the faithful preaching of Christ crucified, and outpourings of God working in people's lives in His own good time and by His own good plan. In the early 1800s, we are introduced instead to Revivalism, which is a manufactured sort of push for "winning souls" in which sentimentalism, emphasizing human ability, and watering down the gospel and need for repentance became the sort of expedient, flashy tool that many embraced. A wide range of theologically suspect (if not outright wrong) positions of this overarching revivalism are covered, from camp meetings where multiple "Apostolic gifts" were expected to be seen as some manner of litmus test for the work of God, to later preachers who downplayed original sin and the radical inability of man to come to Christ on their own. Murray examines how figures such as Charles Finney helped bring this type of change about--a change that is now widely accepted in many Protestant bodies.Murray does not need to draw the parallels between this movement and much of today's "Religion of Self", easy-believe, flash and numbers-oriented attempts at evangelism. Many churches have sacrificed Bible-based teaching and gospel-centered preaching in exchange for self-help, culture-driven, or simply feel-good messages. Murray notes that in many places in the 1800s where this "Revivalism" allegedly saved many souls, only a few years later the effect was largely gone, leaving a spiritual wasteland in its place. This came from treating sentimentality and emotion as signs of conversion, rather than conviction of sin, repentance, and a desire to abide in Jesus Christ and the bearing of fruit.At times, Murray's quoting and explanations go on a bit long, and some names and figures tend to run together, making this a somewhat challenging read. But his points about true revival only coming from God, and for the need to treat repentance, conversion, and salvation as deep, life-long concepts that are not just one-and-done experiences, are incredibly relevant to Christianity today. In an era of easy-believism, a low/casual view of the important of doctrine, prosperity teaching, and emphasis on man over God, "Revival & Revivalism" reminds us our duty as Christians remains constant, even when these twisted and base concepts are the popular or prevailing view.

This was the first work by Iain Murray I have read. I was not disappointed in his level of scholarship. Covering a topic which will inevitably touch on emotional issues, while remaining historically accurate, can be a challenge for some, but I am confident that Murray was successful.Some other reviewers have argued that he gives an unfair treatment of Mr. C.G. Finney, I found this not to be the case. I have read other pieces covering this topic which either heap praise undue on Finney, or reduce his reputation to rubble; Murray does neither. He does not hesitate to mention the controversies surrounding the men of the 'new measures', but never does he try to psychoanalyze the motives or hearts of those leaders of the so-called 'new school'.

There is a lot of FALSE Teaching in MOST churches today about Revival. It cannot be PLANNED "Our church is having Revival Next Week" - NO. Many Christians think that Feelings and emotions is Revival. Most Evangelistic efforts are NOT Biblical Sound Doctrine. Bottom Line is Only when Christians Love God with ALL their heart, soul, mind and strength and Seek the LORD to Rend the heavens and God visits us with His Presence is Revival of God. When Christians draw a circle and kneel inside and ask God to Start Revival IN them. Revival is NOT a Subjective experience but Saturating your life with the Word of God and Prayer and Obedience, resulting in personal Holiness, Righteousness and Blamelessness, worshiping and loving and serving Our Lord Jesus Christ in this life - Living all of life in the conscious Presence of the LORD, Under the Authority of the LORD to the Glory of the LORD. THAT my friend IS PERSONAL REVIVAL as we ASK and SEEK God to make that happen in His Church and then to convict and save the lost.

This was a great book. I loved all the extended eyewitness accounts to what was happening during certai revivals. You learn about the Reformed revivalists Samuel Davies, Archibald Alexander, and Timothy Dwight at Yale University.You learn about the Cane Ridge Revival in Kentucky, both the good and the emotional excesses. You will also learn about the years of the 2nd Great Awakening.Murray seems to be skeptical of the reliability of Charles' Finney's memoirs. He also is quick to point out that Finney departed from Reformed theology early on and that he denied original sin. He points out that Finney viewed revivals as manmade productions rather than as miraculous manifestations of the Spirit.There is also an appendix where Murray decries the lack of information about revivals in the deep south of the United States.I also liked the discussion of the 1857-1858 New York revivals. I did feel that there could have been more coverage given to this particular revival, and how it affected many urban centers in the nation prior to the Civil War.But this book should definitely be in the shelf of Christians interested in American church history.

Topics addressed in detail include, but are not limited to, the Army Corp of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation, California Aqueduct, California Water Wars, Central Arizona Project, Colorado River, Grand Coulee Dam, Glen Canyon Dam, Hoover Dam, John Wesley Powell, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Mono Lake, Ogallala Aquifer, Owens Valley, Teton Dam, and William Mulholland.Underlying the encyclopedic scope of “Cadillac Desert” are two basic themes.First, the settlers lured to the arid West by the railroads and the US Federal Government in the 19th century needed cheap water to support agriculture on their 160 acre parcels of land, and also for their growing cities such as Los Angeles. Cheap hydroelectric power was often a secondary need, essential to pumping water. This need was met by projects of the Bureau of Reclamation and the Corps of Engineers. The projects were generally promoted by local congressmen, who supported each other’s projects. In the long term this endeavor has been subsidized by US taxpayers since return revenues from the projects have generally fallen fall far short of plan.Second, the projects and dams have been an escalating source of controversy. For the most part the projects have not been economically justifiable, especially the irrigation projects, and especially the more recent projects. Also, the dams have created lasting problems -- salination of irrigated soil; silt accumulation behind the dams; environmental devastation to streams, salmon fisheries, and migratory birds; an overstretched US Federal budget, etc. Cheap hydroelectric power has also enabled groundwater pumping which is depleting aquifers. The taxpayer subsidized benefits of cheap water have often gone to large corporate agriculture, not the small farmers for whom the water was intended. By the later part of the 20th century the public sentiment had largely turned away from building ever more dams, and indeed toward removing some of the existing ones.The individual chapters of “Cadillac Desert” are often mesmerizing, instilling a sense of outrage in the civic and history minded reader. The chapter on the 1976 Teton Dam failure is a great example. If the leaders and promoters had thoughtfully considered the economics of the dam, or the geology of the site, the dam would never have been built in the first place. But built it was and fail it did. The spectacularly devastating failure is now used as a case study in engineering courses, providing an example of mistakes at all levels and by all of those involved.While Reisner does seem long winded at times, it is worthwhile staying with “Cadillac Desert” to the end. On one hand, it provides many interrelated perspectives on water and the West. It also ends on a somewhat positive note as the many constituencies involved seem to be converging on a more rational approach to future water usage in the West.

Absolutely fascinating. I lived in California for some 34 years and had no idea as to the history of how Los Angeles got it's water, other than knowing that a good portion came from the Colorado River. This book is thoroughly researched, and deals not just with California but with the water problems and development of the entire U.S. arid West. I had no idea as to the building of the great (and then not so great) dams starting in the late 20's early 1930s, starting with Hoover Dam. Also fascinating treatment as to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the competition with the Corp. of Engineers, and the Congressional pork barrel system that fueled the building of more and more dams and water projects, necessary or not. AND one wonders what will happen as the dams eventually silt up even as the population of cities such as L.A., Phoenix, Tuscon, Denver increase exponentially, as they have and continue to do. Indeed, when I moved to Calif. in 1970 the state's population was about 19 million; today it is about 38 million, DOUBLE that!! And Southern Calif. is basically an arid or at best a semi-arid desert!! This book was written in the late 1980's\early 1990's; one can only surmise how the author would be talking about the extreme Calif. drought now in it's 4th year. Calif gets much of it's water from 'snow-packs', from the Sierra Nevada to the Rockies (which feed the Colorado River). The CA Governor recently stood on bare ground up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and said he should be standing on 5 feet of snow!!! Yet, as the author points out (and I observed living in So. Calif.) the only thing grown in So. Calif. is no longer orange groves, but housing developments (usually in my opinion rather noxious with their same tile roofs, and built 10 ft apart). And they are still going up by the droves on every hill and valley!! The ultimate question is where is the water going to come from to support all this, especially with the effects of climate change, now thought to be at least in part responsible for the current extreme drought??? Anyway, fascinating book (not a short read, for sure) and I learned much as to the development of California and the West. It's all about WATER!!! Harvey (p.s.: I now live back East).

My son's thoughts on this bookSo my earth professor recommended this book to me, so I was skeptical at first, but within the first 20 pages, I was hooked! Marc Reisner does an amazing job of posting arguments, backing them up, and then analyzing them from hindsight about the impact that they really had on water politics in the west. I have never read a book over 200 pages before, so 500 pages were daunting at first, but looking back on it, it was an easy and enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to college students interested in water politics, or ones interested in seeing just how corrupt government agencies can be.

Cadillac Desert is dated, but the corruption underlying the premises of water in the western US remains as distorted now as was then. And the wasteful practices are accelerating! The stench is prevalent from the US Gov all the way through the nice little local water district. This book isa call to mobilize, yet, the chosen path has been to keep shoveling more money on a fundamental mis-truth. Western water as it is concocted is not sustainable and the more money spend trying to prop up a broken concept is just a pipe dream.

Spent 15 days in Morocco. Why I love this guide is that it provided very accurate information and very up to date. But be mindful that as all Eyewitness guides go, they are the perfect guide to tell you the detail while you are there standing in front of your subject. That being said, they do add insight to your visit. Eyewitness books are well made with great pictures and detailed explanation of key you will visit, but it is heavy. We had a driver and often would use it as a reference guide but leave it in the car. However, for the archaeologic and culturally significant sites very informative and for Volubilis it was truly indispensable and were thankful to take it with us. You can hire on-site guides here and their knowledge is probably very good, but if you choose as we did, we used this guide and toured site on our own. If the guards are there protecting the more well known mosaics and you are not with mobs of people, they may gesture for you to come closer to take pictures from a better vantage point or pour water across surface for you to see the colors better. Be sure to thank him his smile is precious.This is a great book for reference before a trip as it will inspire you as it will build the list of places you will want to visit as you are planning. Our trip began in a very obscure but beautiful village 1.5 hours south of Essaouria for a family vacation. However, the remainder of my trip was spent crossing the the High and Middle Atlas, bounding across countless palmeries, visiting the heart of the Morocco film industry, riding camels in the Sahara. The royal cities of Meknes, Fes, and Marakkech as well as Essaouria, Rabat and Casablanca were all very intriguing. We enjoyed learning about Berber, Arabic, and Gnaoua cultures as well as the roots of Islamic history in Morocco and felt that this book was indispensable addendum to our guide/driver.For practicalities, I used the Rough Guide 2013. Great book, current and very useful however, do be careful of all opening and closing times of attractions. Because of the ebb and flow of tourism due to economic and seasonal reasons the times vary. Check with knowledgeable locals, i.e. "concierge" staff in your accommodations but beware of touts. Safe Journey.

Just returned from 2 weeks in Morocco and had this book with me (even though it is heavy). Good descriptions with appropriate pictures. Would have liked more info on the natural resources (geology, wildlife, plants). No mention of Temara Zoo near Rabat (the only zoo in Morocco) which is a great place to see native species in open, natural enclosures (think San Diego Zoo, but very small).

The Morocco guide was even more useful than DK Guides always seem to be and really fleshed out our visit. The composition was also excellent with a good selection of detailed maps to allow easy reference during excursions. A fellow traveler with an earlier edition of the guide complained that Rabat was described as being on the Mediterranean coast, but the current edition has it correctly located on the Atlantic coast. I mention this to illustrate that DK is excellent about proper updates.

Always buy DK guides unless you can't find one of them for your destination. I have 40 or 50 for all over the world. Accurate, complete, easy to use once you learn the system. I never buy any other brand unless I have to.

Love the photos and drawing for the sights and places to visit. Great for planning and knowing what you will see. Not so helpful on selecting hotels etc. but basic info and alternatives to more comprehensive guides.

As always Wanda Brunstetter has written a wonderful Amish story. The Hope Jar is different from other Amish stories and it was such a great story. The only negative to this book, it will be February 2019 before the second book in the series is released. 😞 I highly recommend this book!

Oh my word, this story seemed so real. Michelle had such a horrific upbringing, to see her finally start realizing that she wasn't alone and also realizing that God is real and always with her, makes this a truly touching story. I imagine in the second book that Michelle will still face many challenges, but that she will finally find peace and fulfillment in God's love.

I love Wanda Brunstetter books and this last one did not disappoint! If you like romance and lots of suspense this is the book for you. I couldn't put it down!

There was nothing I didn't like about this book. I couldn't put it down. I was anxious to see what would happen when the real Sara turned up at her grandparents farm. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I want to find out if Michelle converts to the Amish faith and if the relationship with Ezekiel turns to marriage.

Wanda Brunstetter what a fantastic book I love the Prayer jar. The story is about deceit but Michelle needed the love of a family she never had of course she went about it the wrong way love and forgiveness is what life is all about I can't wait until February for the next book I think I have read every book you have written and enjoyed every single one of them. I enjoyed this story and I am so sure others will, too. This author always does such a great job writing and I have read many of her writings. I am pleased with this and hope to read the next one, too.

An interesting book on how a individual had a difficult life, than met an Amish couple who tried to help. Very exciting and great reading.

I am generally a huge fan of the Eyewitness guides -- they are always my first pick when I am going somewhere new. I love the "Top 10" guides for when my visit to a city is short and I am able to pick just a few places to go and know I will also be provided with a handy pocket transit map. The translation of this one to a Kindle edition, though, was disastrous -- Eyewitness guides are nothing without maps and pictures but, when the Kindle-ized this one, they must have lost the majority of the images and all useful maps. There were some, mostly thumbnail, pictures, but they were in a resolution that did not allow them to enlarge nicely. The map of the top 10 sites, could only be seen without seeing the corresponding list of the 10 sites. Same for the map of the top 10 restaurants, top 10 monuments and memorials, etc. Maps of major sites, such as the features of the Schonbrunn's gardens, can only be seen with no labels or accompanying text at all, translating them from maps into meaningless collections of rectangles of varying colors -- the same was sadly true of all the maps to key features of major sites. Can I get my money back?I would like to blame all of my complaints on the poor translation of the book into a Kindle edition, but I also think it's fair to say there's a shortage of good content. There should have been some more Top 10 lists included. I might have listed them in their entirety in this review. Top 10 Singapore and Top 10 San Diego and all the other Top 10 books all are so much more helpful.

Having only four days in Vienna, we wanted to pack in the most while keeping an eye on expenses. The "Top 10" guide greatly facilitated the efficient organization of our sightseeing, cultural, and dining experiences. Took the guide's advice and saved/saw the most by using the airport train and hop on/off two day tour bus pass. The included easy to read compact city center map complimented the guide. It's not necessary to purchase a separate city map.

We have been using DK Eyewitness Travel books for quite a while now. We use the regular size books and also the portable Top 10 books as well. I love reading the historical backgrounds that give you an idea about the country and people you will be visiting, the colorful pictures, maps, recommendations and practical information sections. I am so used to the practicality of the way the book is set up, I get lost when I look at other travel books. When we plan a trip, the first thing I do is look up the most current DK Eyewitness Travel book. Loved Vienna and this book did not fail us, again.

TL;DR: Many of the suggestions don't have map reference, which makes it hard to use/useless.This was my first and probably last Top 10 buy and the first book that I thought about returning. I always buy a traveling book before visiting a new city, not only for the duration of the trip, but it can be used as a simple log of places I have visited, afterwards. Short story, I won't be using this book in Vienna. And here is two samples for the lack of reference:Top 10 walks (p68): 4 of them refer to other pages. none of them have a map reference, only 2 gives some clue on how to get.Top 10 Hotels in *great location* (p143): 6 of them don't have a map reference.All in all, if you are not planning to use the map, it's a good book, but if you want a standalone book and map, it's not the book.

We just returned from Vienna where we spent 2 1/2 days. The Top 10 guide was perfect for our trip as it highlighted the most popular/best things to do. We hit over half of their recommended Top 10 list and had an absolutley wonderful visit (snow and all). If you are going to be visiting Vienna for more than 3 days, however, I'd recommend you get the "full" version of the Eyewitness Vienna guide. :)

I purchased these for my daughter and friends upon their request. They found these books to be extremely well done and helpful. They said the maps and additional info for the country made getting around and sightseeing a breeze. As a matter of fact, they enjoyed them so much that they will not allow me to post and resell them! They are going to keep them for perhaps a future trip! Money well spent!

Like the rest of the series, Vienna is also great. Enough detail for a weekend or week visit. True everything to see/do in Vienna isn't listed, but plenty is and it is a great starting reference for first-time or repeat visitors. We'll keep buying/using these Top 10 guides.
