This is a great, succinct history of the life of Jesus for kids. It does seem to focus only on His life as a man and does not really emphasize His divinity. We read it to our son when discussing the life Jesus lead as an example to us and we supplement it with scripture and other children's bible books that each emphasize different aspects of Jesus.
Katherine Paterson has long been one of my favorite authors. When I came across this book, I knew I had to have it for the toddlers in my Sunday School class. I love that the story isn't 'cutesy' or watered-down. My only wish is that the beautiful illustrations were less someber. Jesus IS the light of the Wrold, but the images are a little dark for the age group, although beautiful. My 5 year old son also loves the book and we read it regularly at bedtime.
I have made a smaller book from the pictures of this book to give to the children of Bangladesh . We'll frst read the story then leave the gift with them. They should love it. They book was in excellant shape. I've used it before also.
Such a lovely book... the telling of the sacred story and the illustrations.
I was so pleased when I received this item and read over it before forwarding to my daughter for my six and eight year old grandsons. They live so far from us now that we haven't seen them in a year or more; but my husband and I wanted to be certain that they still know that God loves them and watches over them just as we taught them when they were younger.They are both good readers now and they can practice on a wider scale with this book than their school readers, but more importantly, the bookholds interest and encourages them to read to each other.....we want themto remember the God and Jesus that we introduced them to a small children.I would highly recommend this book to anyone to help any child see the story behind Jesus' life.
I thought it was a great children's book. A nice, balanced introduction to the life of Christ. I child wouldn't feel overwhelmed.
Purchased this book for our children. It is divided into short segments with corresponding illustrations. Perfect for a pre bedtime lesson. Author, in my opinion has done a very good job of transliterating the selected stories on level perfect for children under 8.
This is a lovely book with very spare writing and stunning illustrations. My one regret, since this is a book for children, is that Jesus' visit to the temple at Passover of his twelfth year as told in Luke is omitted. While some paintings depict Jesus as the teacher rather than the student in this incident, the text clearly indicates that Jesus was asking questions and responding to the teachers with his understanding of what he had probably studied in preparation for his bar mitzvah. This image of Jesus as a boy wanting to know and understand matters of religion and faith could have been a very powerful teaching moment as chidren do have questions and have the capacity to engage in these wonderings earlier than we adults sometimes give them credit for. Otherwise a wonderful book that I believe would appeal to a wide range of Christian denominations. I also appreciate the ethnic sensibility of the illustrations and the image of the Light.
