This is a VERY INFORMATIVE book to have. The writers have so much info in here to help guide you through the process of moving and living in the Dominican Republic. We'll be visiting there again this year after 13yrs and we hope it's everything they say it is when we get there. If it is, we will probably move there and become permanent residents. I would highly recommend this book to anyone needing guidance on where to look for the help you may need as an expat to be! :)

I loved this book. It is great for anyone thinking of living, or even just visiting the D.R. My wife is Dominincan and we are currently thinking about purchasing a vacation home their since we go back and forth sooooo much. This book gave me the insight as an expat and what I should expect. I feel well equipped now to begin the process. If you're just thinking about visiting, this book will help as well. You'll find this book has a little bit for everyone. I'm not big on reading, but I couldn't put this one down.

Way more than I expected!!! There are breakdowns of the major cities, the international schools there, hospitals, insurance info, general taxes and more. Even common prices for things like gas, food, property tax, water costs. Written in a very honest way and many pros/cons listed that anyone thinking of moving to the DR should know....and know it from someone who's done it! The authors are not trying to sell you on moving there, only helping you make a very informed decision. BRAVO!!!

Having visited RD many times, Ginnie's insights rang true for me. Book includes many helpful listings with addresses and phone numbers, as well as helpful advice regarding getting a driver's license, temporary residency, and dealing with the bureaucracy.

All I can say is I really wish I had met Ginnie!!!Fantastic book, well done to all involved! With my ongoing journey to live permanently in the DR, this has given me tons and tons of information to help along the way for every situation imaginable. There's even a lot of stuff written that my Dominican husband doesn't know about. I have read and tagged each section a number of times as I know I shall carry this book as my bible as I move around this amazing country. Thank you!

Reading this book is kind of like sailing. Sometimes you're cruising along in a light breeze. Other times, you're fighting for your life in a gale. The pace is delightful. It's a travelogue of sailing adventures exploring fascinating places – a primer on Buddhist philosophy – and a hard look at the effects of climate change. It leaves one thinking, long after the reading stops, because some of the concepts are life changing. I find myself viewing everyday challenges differently now, and that's a tribute to the content.The writing style is particularly engaging. I found myself laughing out loud several times. This is not a slam-bang page-turner that you can't put down. It's more like that first cup of coffee that one looks forward to every morning, combined with some contemplation time. This is not something you rush through in order to get to the end. It's more something to savor and absorb over a period of time. Rather like life. Thank you Heather.

Mann has written an interesting book about her adventures aboard "Wild Hare" sailing in the Caribbean for parts of six years. Her writing about sailing is fresh and engaging and she does a nice job showing how her concern for global warming and other environmental issues is nourished by her time at sea.After each chapter, she offers a short reflection on her experiences and how it informs her meditation and mindfulness practice. She is a student of Thich Nhat Hanh. Each of these reflections ends with a suggested meditation in the style of Hanh with different but related reflections on the in breath and the out breath. Unfortunately where Hanh's meditations are elegant and simple, Mann's are complicated and confusing. Trying this one for example: Breathing in, I see a path leading away from suffering (a path of insight, love, compassion, ethics, justice, moderation, and simplicity). Try to remember that and get all the way through it while taking an in-breath.Despite this weakness, the main parts of the book are a pleasure to read.

Engaging from the start, "Oceans of Insight: A Sailor's Voyage from Dispair to Hope," tells of life lessons understood a sea during a five year adventure. Active, descriptive passages make the reader feel as if he, too, is physically on board the vessel, "Wild Hair," as it navigates the Caribbean Sea.I appreciated the author's imagry and knowledge of botany and ecology as she recounted the history of the islands she visited. When I finished the book I scanned an earlier page of chapter titles that I had skipped. Even though I am familiar with the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh I was surprised by the the titles: Beginner's Mind, Impermanance, Mindful Action, among others. I was struck with the thought that Thay's teachings, besides informing the author's journey, had also helped organize and clarify the telling of her tale. And the reader is also able to reflect, yet again, on those lessons.

As someone who grew up on the water in Puget Sound near Seattle, and is now a climate activist and a Buddhist teacher, Ocean of Insight is perfectly pitched for me. Mann writes with passion, experience, wit, and wisdom. She tells a good adventure story while plumbing the depths of our environmental crisis and need for a spiritual grounding.On the environmental information part, she is quite artful in weaving it seamlessly into the story, and powerfully so. It's useful and deep without hitting the reader over the head with it.On the spiritual insights part, its as if she is giving spiritual teachings throughout the text, again skillfully tethered to the story, but going well beyond. She is a wonderful teacher.I know its a good book because I found frequently myself laughing out load or tearing up at the nature beauty she describes, or the very human foibles she admit to, or the insights she so kindly offers up.A beautiful book. Highly recommended.

Mr. Prager and Rabbi Telushkin have created an instructional overview of who the Jews are as a people, and their treatment (by Christians, Muslims, other Jews, in Nazi Germany, etc.) throughout history. The authors start by naming and defining the elements of Judaism: God, Torah, nationhood (Israel), and chosenness. These elements are important to consider within the context of each historical description. This book has added to my historical knowledge--in horror and sorrow at the atrocities committed, but also in admiration that the faithful have persisted. God has carried His chosen people through near destruction, and continues to do so. It's a beautiful book. Thank you both.

First, I like Dennis Prager, I like his style and his intelligence. In this case, although I've not finished it yet, he, like thousands of others, thinks he may have put a nail in the "why" of antisemitism. Antisemitism is a "nice" way of saying what it really is, Jew Hate.Just as our black and other minorities, back when it was legal, I've had doors slammed in my face--literally--when they discovered that my "church" was a synagogue. I've had the honor of being kicked off a "whites only" beach even though I AM white, but there are still elements out there that think we're a race from some other planet.I've been told that I couldn't possibly be Jewish, I don't have horns! No, I'm not kidding, it happened in some tiny town in Oklahoma. Dr. Prager, I think he's got a Ph.D., tries to pin down the bottom line causes of Jew hate, but I personally believe he's got some wriggle room in his book.Overall, it is excellently written and definitely a book for everyone to read, Jewish or not. Being Jewish is fun, particulary when I hear how rich we all are (I got wiped out in 2008) but I don't even get $20,000 a year from Social Security. How smart we all are. I've met some pretty dense Jewish people. How we can just go to the "Jew Bank" and get money for whatever we need. Oh boy, I certainly would wish THAT was true...but it isn't.Jew hate is the oldest hate on the planet, even before we were blamed for Jesus' execution for the crime of sedition, as the Romans felt he was. Despite all of the downside of being able to track my lineage to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel) I'd not change a single thing.Thanks, Dennis, you did a good job.

The thought of tackling Belgium without Rick Steves was daunting when we booked our flights earlier this year. Thankfully, this 1st Edition was released and available on Amazon! With overnight shipping, it arrived just 12 hours prior to boarding our flight on April 2.Rick's recommendations have accompanied me through 12 countries (and many major cities) since I started vacationing in Europe on and off since 2005. These books have NEVER ....repeat NEVER....steered me wrong. My journeys were planned using the always-reliable guidance; my travels were enhanced by information that helped me be a bolder adventurer; and my experiences were richer for the treasures revealed by entering "Through the Back Door".And, with this guide, he's done it again!

In the opinion of this frequent traveler, Rick Steves's guides are the ONLY ones you need if you're going anywhere in Europe! In the past, I've bought two or three guidebooks for the same country before I felt like I had all of the information I needed. Once I found the Rick Steves books, I have never bought another vesion of any travel guide again. The Rick Steves guides are so thorough, that the only way you could get better, more complete guidance would be to have Rick or one of his tour guides along with you.Each guide takes you through the country city by city, including what to do before you leave home, what to pack, where to stay, where to eat, and what to see. He'll tell you what sights will need advance booking or reservations. There are walking guides for cities, as well as detailed walking tours for museums, churches, and other major sights. For the history lovers, there are beautifully written sections to educate you about what you're seeing, which makes your experience measurably more meaningful. The information is so detailed that Rick tells you things like, "When exiting the front of the train station, turn to your left and walk 20 yards to the bus stop. Take bus #11 to go directly to the castle." It doesn't get any easier to plan your sightseeing than that! And of course, there are simplified city maps to help you navigate once you get there, usually marked with his suggested walking tour route.Other helpful sections include tips about money, shopping, climate, and transportation. But one of my favorite parts of Rick's books is that he tells you how to really see a place by becoming what he calls a "temporary local." In other words, don't miss the real heart of the country by seeing only the well known tourist hot spots. He tells you how the locals live and how you can have that experience, too.Finally, each book includes a list of survival phrases and words to help you communicate while you're there. As Rick says, and I can confirm, the locals will very much appreciate your attempt to use their language instead of just assuming that they speak English. Don't worry about your pronunciation - just try it!There is so much valuable information in the Rick Steves guides that I'm sure I'm leaving something out. In my opinion, they have no equal!

I used the sections on Bruges intensively, and also used the sessions on Ghent and Brussels. They were helpful, though I was sad about the omission of the "Jerusalem" church and home from the list of sites, as I would have made it my business to get there if I had known about it.Two things bothered me using the guide on the Kindle:One was the extensive section about the Museum of Torture right in the middle of the Bruges guide. I had to keep flipping through to get to the parts I needed, and I had to see this long part about torture, with some kind of picture, many times. I did not enjoy seeing it even once. I don't think these museums should be encouraged, but at any rate, why does it need so much space in the guidebook?Second thing was that on the Kindle the city maps, because they are intended to be on facing pages, are just half maps, and really not useful at all unless you are trying to navigate between two places which are due north or due south of each other.

Used Rick Steve’s book while in Belgium. I god sent. The info provide was worth its weight in gold, especially train info. We made the mistake of doing our bookings in Amsterdam. If you want to ride the Thaley make your reservations at least two weeks in adavanced, even that might not be enough. We wanted a early Thaley to Schiphol, but found out it was sold out. We took the regular train. Due to mechanical problems we had to change trains twice. Consequently we got to the air port 90 min b 4 boarding. Wanted to be at Schlphol earlier to do some duty free shopping. Order the book early, read it and plan plan plan!!!

Thick book that does a great job covering your quick need to knows in Belgium. Loved that it went over many cities and their details. Helped me yok look more into what we had time for and could do. Remember to not only use his restaurant and bar guides. Some have become touristy and there are better places around!

Fabulous as always! Thank you Rick!! Used for 3 weeks this summer. As a medically fragile traveler, this helped us decide what to do, what to spend my energy on. While not written for that purpose, it helped tremendously. Followed suggestion of ripping out just the pages for countries we were visiting. Hard for this book lover to do, but helped keep things light.

Typical Rick Steves quality guide book. We have been purchasing his European books since 1999 and they are helpful and the print size and color is easily readable. We don't pay much attention to his lodging and restaurant recommendations anymore but his descriptions of sites to see, choices of places to visit on a schedule and other basic information are very good. When we plan a trip to Europe our first purchase is his book but we always do so with other books and especially internet research.

Rick Steves is the best travel book out there. It is not even embarrassing carrying this around because you get to meet other Rick fans. My daughter and I just returned from the Netherlands and Belgium and these were constantly with us. We especially like Rick's philosophy about traveling--it's not about shopping, but about gaining experiences. His suggestions on where to eat were especially helpful. And the walking tours in each city were terrific.

 I like these lessons. We homeschool, and this is a nice supplemental workbook that can be done quickly each day. My only real complaint is that some of the lessons need to be cut out, which ruins the next days lesson on the back of the page. Because of that, be prepared to make copies often (or flip-flop days if possible).

The premise put forth in the title is supported by some keen insights into "leadership by Calling" and comparisons to it with "modern leadership theory." Les Csorba writes about the danger of pursuing results without compassion; a point with which I agree. Unfortunately, some of the examples he chooses are questionable...After warning about the danger of weak character in powerful leaders, Csorba chastises German Chancellor Schroeder for turning back on some promises to George W Bush regarding the war on terrorism and then goes on to deride him for his four wives. Meanwhile he praises Jack Welch for going from Neutron Jack to a gentler Jack (which Jack says he would abandon if needed)while still making the "tough" decisions that got the "results" for the shareholders. Jack can change is mind and go back to compassionless results... OK. Also, there is no mention that Jack was getting results with his personal secretary whilst the wife was at home...Unfortunately the theme in Csorba's examples becomes one of bashing the mistakes of Democrats and forgiving the sins of the Republicans. He does sprinkle in some condemnation for a few wrong-minded Republicans in a meek attempt at balance. It's a shame that he turned this into a politcally tainted work. It started off so well.It started off well even though it will turn off readers who are not people of faith as faith is central precept to this book. It also started off well even though he chose to make George W Bush the role model for how to be a trust-able leader. Unfortunately this conservative/political bent turned an even harder right from there and kept going. It kept going to the point that I could no longer plan on sharing this book with some folks I know who really need it. They would simply say its a Bush-ie/right-winger book and dismiss the valuable and otherwise soundly argued premise. Too bad. Csorba almost had a classic instead of a politically tainted leadership manual.I say this even though I am Republican, am one of the few folks who would admit they were voting for Bush BEFORE the election, am a person of faith, and tend to find the Dems an easy target. But this book was supposed to be about so much more than Republican politics. Too bad.

This author, Les T. Csorba, is a Christian, served in the first Bush Administration, and knows what he's talking about. He says that true leaders are driven by a vision larger than themselves and the applause they might receive. As the book's title implies, Csorba thinks untrustworthy leadership is or should be an oxymoron.My favorite quote from this book is: "The `best and the brightest' only become the best when they are the modest and the moral as well." Csorba includes plenty of contemporary examples of leaders who failed the public trust, not only in politics, but in religion and business as well.This book is well documented and worthy of anyone's time who cares to learn more about leadership. I enjoyed and recommend it.

Vanessa Woods is a research assistant, journalist, and author of children’s books. A member of the Hominoid Psychology Research Group, she works with Duke University as well as Lola Ya Bonobo in Congo. The best book on the Bonobo chimp! Bringing both the emerging love story of her and her fiancee as it unfolds in her discovery of the ways and temperaments of the most elusive and mysterious ape species on the planet. These loving and lovable chimps are the closet thing we females have to a matriarchal social-cultural example of what is possible with female cooperation. The Congo is dangerous and the journey that she and her fiancee (now husband) take to study these fabulous females is awe-inspiring. True pioneers! The writing is personal, funny, frightening, inspiring and very, very human. This is a classic!

there should be more of a disclaimer for those might be upset by descriptions of graphic violence. The author introduces these without warning -- you're reading along happily and suddenly you're confronted by truly horrific descriptions of rape, cannibalism, torture, mutilation, and killing. While raising awareness of the war in the Congo is necessary, I personally cannot read such horrors without it sinking deep into my psyche and haunting me forever. Since I am not able to remove such darkness once it gets into me, I would've preferred being warned about those scenes. (In fact, after the first exposure I was able to find someone to warn me about what portions to skip.) It is quite possible to enjoy the book even when skipping those scenes.

I agree with the vast majority of reviewers who gave this book high ratings (and if you liked it, you should also read Lucy by Laurence Gonzales--fiction but fascinating). I've been interested in bonobos for quite awhile and learned so much from Ms. Woods' poignant account of her time in the Congo, her research and her husband's, and the selfless people who work at the sanctuary.I feel compelled to comment on the one and two star ratings, particularly regarding Ms. Woods' writing abilities and credentials. So, okay, she's not Hemingway...but this is a personal memoir (which also included a lot of facts about her subjects and Congo) and her 'voice' comes through loud and clear. She is at once engaging, humorous, compassionate and caring. I laughed, wept, and felt compelled to learn more about both the Congo and the bonobos--an author can't achieve much better than that. As to the following comments: "Absolute drivel, written by an armchair adventurer whose observations about Congo were made from the comfort of her bonobo sanctuary" ... Ms. Woods was/is far more than an armchair adventurer. She had researched chimps for several years before going to the bonobo sanctuary; she is a graduate of the Australian National University with a Masters degree, and is now a Research Scientist in Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University, not to mention an award-winning journalist. I'm guessing she knows more about bonobos than 99% of the planet, including everyone who has read (and reviewed) her book. And her focus was not to write an account of the wars there (though I'm impressed with her knowledge about them and glad she shared it), bur rather to share her experience and involvement with regard to the very specific tests and experiments done at the sanctuary. So, hmmm...I wonder what purpose would have been served if Ms. Woods would have deliberately put herself in harm's way by blustering into war zones. Aside from peacekeepers, war journalists or soldiers deployed to do so, I can't think of anybody who would want to!I hope I meet this fascinating woman some day and I hope she continues her worthwhile work.

An accidental find and a surprisingly attention grabbing book! I was not expecting to fall in love, but I did. I can get bored with a book and, if it doesn't catch on by page 80, I put it down and never pick it up again; there was no risk of that here. I will say that the book is for a mature audience so you might make your teens wait to read this one. I do think it gave me an understanding of human conflict in Congo that I had little awareness of previously so it is a great book for young adults to read and get a sense of the world. I'm definitely recommending it to my friends and family!

For readers uninitated with Japanese literature, few better starting points present themselves than Ryukusone Akutagawa's collection: Rashomon & Other Stories. Short, sweet, and to-the-point with a haunting flair, this collection of short stories delivers to novice Japanese literature patrons a solid dose of early 20th century prose from a lean, intelligent, and creative mind. For many readers already knowledgable of master Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa, Rashomon may be a familair name. Indeed, Kurosawa adopted Akutugawa's Rashomon into a classic film in 1956 starring frequent collaborator Toshiro Mifune; additionally, Kurosawa borrowed heavily from another Akutagawa story in this slim volume to complete his film version of Rashomon (the name will remain silent to add suprise). The author, Ryukusone Akutagawa (1892-1927) writes from the unique viewpoint of a culture caught in between two worlds: (1) the modern Japanese culture, which mimiced Western nations, especially in colonial expansion; (2) and from the pre-modern Japanese perspective, which championed inward-looking, self-aware, isolationist worldviews. Akutagawa saw the Japanese world changing before him. Additionally, Akutagawa saw himself as an outsider in his homeland; perhaps this is because of his Christian faith among other things? Akutagawa's personal and political emotions are dyed with isolationism, which translates into his writing, especiallly in the first two stories: In the Grove & Rashomon. A third story, Yam Gruel, is longer than the other writings and contains a slightly different theme of "be careul what you wish for". However, Yam Gruel is also keeps with Akutagawa's belief that Western modernity would lead to a deep corruption of traditional Japanese values. Rashomon and Other Stories is a very lean book (less than a hundred pages) and while it can easily be read in one sitting. However, this tactic is not recommended as the reader will only abuse their own pleasure by speed-reading. Akutagawa's sharp prose and lean passages create a savory work not to be rushed, but laconically enjoyed. In the end, Rashomon & Other Stories make a nice contribution to the canon of Japanese literature and is recommended to all readers interested in memorable short stories.

The edition of Rashomon is a collection of six short stories: "In a Grove," "Rashomon," "Yam Gruel," "The Martyr," "Kesa and Morito," "and "The Dragon." The first two are apparently the short stories on which Kurosawa's famous film, "Rashomon," is based.Short stories are not my usual cup of tea; however, I greatly enjoyed these. They are clearly older stories, but Akutagawa is extremely talented at evoking emotion in the reader. Of the six stories, "Yam Gruel" was my favourite. "In a Grove" and "Kesa and Morito" consider the notion of truth by observing a story from multiple perspectives, and "Rashomon" closely looks at empathy, but "Yam Gruel" was the most successful in portraying a character for whom my heart moved.Of the stories, my least favourite was "The Martyr." I won't give much away from the story, except to say that the notion of martyrdom bothers me -- a community singing the praises for someone whom they have caused great suffering isn't particularly useful once that person has passed. I hope that this is the emotion that Akutagawa intended to evoke.These stories aren't plot-driven, and they're not for someone who wants a quick hit of adrenaline. I saw the movie when it first came out and I really enjoyed it. It is required reading for most literature majors at our university. When I read the book I kept thinking to myself 'where is the gate'. Then I realized that the movie is actually based on 3 different stories written by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. I loved the book so much that I tried to get all of his stories to read. Unfortunately I wash unable to find an English translation. I did however order the book of 17 stories. A couple of them are repeats from what I read in Rashomon but I really am looking forward to reading that book. His writings have so many twists and turns that I am always surprised at the end. What seems to be true is not or is it?

This is only the second authentic Japanese work I have ever read. It was prompted by reading Japanese Tales of Mystery and Imagination. Both books I thought superb and both are page turners. They seemed similar in sharing the qualities of character development, a sombre tone for the most part, and intricate plotting- and yet all this is done in a well paced, almost short story format.I am too much of a novice to know if the styles are characteristic of Japanese literature but I was left wishing Amazon had more to offer by the same authors. It seems there is a supply if you know the language, which I don't.By the way, the complex characterization still leaves you room to draw your own conclusions about the protagonists. Well worth trying.

It is an example of how a point of view by a witness can confound a story from their point of view or cunning misrepresentation. This is a wonderful resource for a one-stop look at "all things Disney." However, be forewarned that this book does have its mistakes and is not completely thorough, so don't expect something exhaustive...but this is pretty close to it. Descriptions tend to bounce back and forth between incredibly descriptive to incredibly nondescriptive. A tv show that lasted literally only a month will sometimes have a much longer description than a park attraction that had been up for years. There are other mistakes that veteran Disney lovers will also note. For example, the encyclopedia lists "Pecos Bills" eatery (Frontierland) in Disney World as serving some Mexican fare. However, that is incorrect...the Mexican fare is served at "El Pirata y El Perico" eatery (Adventureland), but this eatery is not even listed in the book at all. The two do share an outside dining area. It lists "Caribbean Plaza" (home to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride) in Disney World as "near Adventureland", when it's actually a part of Adventureland and borders Frontierland. Those are just a couple of examples of little mistakes throughout the book. That said, it is a wonderful compilation of everything Disney and is a great gift for any Disney lover!

This is a must have for Disney fans. Everything from ABC's LOST to the Alice Comedies and from Steamboat Willy to Meet the Robinsons is covered here. Some articles are more detailed than others but everything is covered. Makes an interesting read just on its own. Film historians and students will find a wealth of connective material here to jump start them on research and fill in the dots on hard to find questions. A beautiful display of pictures is included with this volume. If you can't actually visit the archives (and I certainly would like to) then this is the next best thing.

I am a Disney fanatic. This book has been very interesting to me, because I have enjoyed reading about who provides the voices for my favorite animated films.. My favorite animated film is The Little Mermaid.. I dyed my hair to match Ariel's! I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the voice for Scuttle was provided by the legendary Buddy Hackett. The other thing that I love about this film is that Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel, went to high school in my hometown..

This book is a great resource for all Disney fans. All the characters, all the movies (unfortunately, the Mephisto movie made in collaboration with Salvador Dali is not in the book) and all the attractions, parks, properties and influentials employees are mentioned. Maybe just not as exhaustive as I would like it; it is, however, a great resource.

Wow! Great book...my daughter hasn't put it down since I purchased it for her! Highly recommend it for anyone wanting to know everything htere is to know about Disney!

"Disney A to Z" is an awesome book that a true Disney fan cannot live without. It is a great book that will help you find out about old Disney movies, that you might have not seen. "Disney A to Z" encyclopedia is also an essential source for those that love to play the "Disney Seen it" board game. It gives a short description of ALL Disney movies including the short ones that came out after the World War II. I LOVE IT!!!

My daughter had borrowed this book from the library. I couldn't believe I could buy this book at such a great price. And it was in great shape. The book cover was a little beat up, but what are book covers for? To protect the book. We are so happy with our purchase. And might I say, you can't go wrong with a Disney book. She loves this book!
