After reading McCollough's Truman, I made it a point to search out and read all of his prior works. Having done so, I was pleased to find this book which is basically a collection of magazine articles and other short efforts collected in book form.The first four or five stories were magnificent. Articles on Alexander von Humbolt, Louis Agassiz, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederic Remington and Washington Roebling were magnificent. Also outstanding are stories concerning Medora, North Dakota and the Panamanian railroad.Keeping this work from five star status are several less than stellar essays, primarily one dealing with strip mining in Appalachian Kentucky, a work so slanted against the mining industry (and extractive manufacturing in general) as to be almost unreadable by anyone in manufacturing. I can imagine readers becoming inflamed by McCollough's prose only to be offered the alternative of increasing their power bill by 10% in return for discontinuing the practices he abhors.Also lacking were essays on photographer David Plowden and Miriam Rothschild. However, 80% of the works were typical McCollough excellence in teaspoon doses, a solid overall four star effort.Several of the essays touch on subjects that were previously (or subsequently) covered more fully in book length efforts (Brooklyn Bridge and Panama Canal in particular), but having read them did not feel that he was repeating himself. If you're a McCollough fan, a definite must read.

Strange as it may seem this is the first book I've read by historian David McCullough, and I thought his short works would be a good introduction to his writing style. "Brave Companions" is a collection of essays written over the years for magazine articles or as lectures, so there is no overlaying connection or theme other than that they're all of historical subjects. Each essay was fascinating on its own covering a wide range of subjects from game changing engineering projects, historical research, important places and times. And, of course, people, all kinds of people--some out of the past while others were more contemporary to our times. The author did a lot of traveling and interviewing for these essays and his efforts and writing skills are apparent in each piece. Like all compilations of short works some essays are more interesting than others; depending on the readers personal tastes. Since I like reading about history, whatever the subject, I enjoyed all of the pieces and got exactly what I wanted from this book. I found McCullough's writing to be well researched, interesting and informative, it held my interest from cover to cover. I was already acquainted with some of his subjects like Theodore Roosevelt and Alexander Von Humboldt while others, like Harriet Beecher Stowe (author: "Uncle Tom's Cabin"), were less familiar. In each case the subject was fascinating, and sometimes disturbing, but I often came away with a new appreciation for the places, events and people that make up our human history. In "Brave Companions" you will learn about building a famous bridge from scratch, the early days of flying, the dangers of Caisson's Disease and a little known, Pulitzer Prize winning author of numerous novels. All in all this is a brilliant look at the many facets of World History and the people and places that make the study of the past memorable. There's more, a lot more, in this wonderful collection of historical sketches, but read it for yourself, see if you agree. "Portraits in History" is the subtitle of this collection of essays, biographical studies, and speeches "produced over a period of nearly twenty years." They are "about subjects as dissimilar as Alexander von Humboldt and Conrad Richter" and "written for such different occasions as college commencement ... and the ceremonies celebrating the bicentennial of the United States Congress." The seventeen chapters are loosely grouped into five sections. Each section, each chapter, each entry varies in length and approach, some are in-depth studies, some are dialogues, interviews or sketches, some of very personal recollections or even general bemoaning of lack of general knowledge - not being familiar with Antietam/Sharpsburg but having walked the Vietnam Memorial. The few times McCullough slips, it is jarring - maybe he does it on purpose? For example, when describing Washington, the long walks in the morning, he talks about the climate - "I like the climate, the slow shift of the seasons here. ...Summers are murder ..." I kept notes of all the books I have to rediscover or locate - enough to keep me very busy for a while. The subjects of McCullough's portraits come to life as "The Unexpected Mrs. Stowe," author of Uncle Tom's Cabin did - and I am now wondering about the relationship with her husband's first wife. And then the history of founder of Radcliffe or the plans of the Brooklyn Bridge ... It is a wonderful collection.

Loved it. Felt like every chapter focused on someone or something that I SHOULD know about. A healthy and delicious stew.Only one problem: The date of original publication should have been included with the title of each chapter - instead of tucked away elsewhere in the book. Once I found the publication listing, I wrote the date at the beginning of each chapter. Makes a HUGE difference in the context of each piece.

If you want to learn something about lesser known historical figures this is the book for you. As one would expect from McCullough the writing is excellent. I guarantee it will induce you to learn more about the people he profiles, e.g., Beryl Markham, a woman who had the guts and courage of a junkyard dog. Read her fantastic memoir, West with the Night, certainly one of the best books I have ever read. McCullough also includes an speech which he gave to a college graduating class that should be required reading for every literate person. Highly recommended.

This is a split review. On the one hand, the book is well researched (despite Patty Hearst's refusal to talk to the author), well written and eminently readable and recounts with great style an era that many of us have forgotten about -- tremendous social unrest, violence, and what could well pass for mass hysteria. On the other, when I finished it my overall reaction was "so what"? The book doesn't really draw any conclusions about the times; it observes and no more. And even though the book and Mr. Toobin (in various post-publication interviews) make it pretty clear that he thinks she knew exactly what she was doing (i.e., she was not a victim of the "Stockholm Syndrome" and did what she did knowingly and willingly), it leaves the reader with a resounding "so what".There is no broader social/political analysis or any sort of analysis of how a wealthy young woman was able, through intelligence and the ability to be highly manipulative, to get away with lots of things that most people could not get away with. As a result, the book seems more like a mildly bad dream than a social history. It also leaves me with questions about why Mr. Toobin wrote the book. Did he think it would make him lots of money (which it surely has) or fame (which he already has)? Did he hope to find a justification for it all? If so, at the risk of becoming a character in his own book, it might have helped to explain why he bothered with it in the first place.I give it five stars for the writing, research and readability but three for "value".

I was 21 when Patty Hearst was kidnapped, and I embraced her story until her commutation. I read everything I could find about it; and was convinced she had been brainwashed as her lawyer claimed. But, through Toobin's exquisite writing, I began to see an entirely different story unfolding. Toobin sticks to the facts; and it is the facts that tell the truth. The book reads like a suspense novel. I couldn't put it down. There is much more I can say, but won''t; because I don't want to be the spoiler. I highly recommend it.

Most people who were around in the mid-1970's will remember the kidnapping of Patty Hearst by a hapless band of revolutionary players, the Symbionese Liberation Army. This group, whose main members were - as Jeffrey Toobin puts it in his new book, "American Heiress: The Wild Saga of the Kidnapping, Crimes and Trial of Patty Hearst" - as differentiated as a fox-hole in a war-time movie. There was the black revolutionary - "Cinque" or Donald DeFreeze - the white revolutionaries - Emily and William Harris, the gay revolutionaries - Camilla Hall and Patricia Soltysik, and various, other hangers-on. The SLA was a group of urban guerillas, who seemed determined to wreck the system, but were stymied on what to put in it's place.And who was Patricia Hearst? As Toobin describes her, she was the heiress to a fortune but was sort of drifting through life, so far. The daughter of mismatched parents, she was the middle of five daughters, raised by her mother to aim for the conventional wealthy woman's life - marriage to an eligible man and a life raising children of her own. In stark contrast to the free-living members of the SLA, Hearst at 19 was living with a much older man - Steven Weed - in a married-like life, while studying at the Berkeley campus of the University of California. On the night of February 4, 1974, Patricia Hearst was kidnapped from the town house in Berkeley by the SLA and forcibly turned into a "revolutionary" by her kidnappers. Or, did she join in the ensuing mayhem willingly?There began an almost two year spree by the SLA, with Hearst - now called "Tania" - as an active participant. Bank robberies, shootouts, and blackmailing for food distributions to the poor were all part of mid-1970's in San Francisco and Los Angeles. This group - which literally and thankfully couldn't shoot too straight - made headlines. I can still remember where I was when I heard Patricia Hearst had been found and rescued. But what was she rescued from? I really enjoyed this book. It is a great testimony that will help others who struggle with forgiveness and relationships with their spouse and children.

I enjoyed reading how the author realized that she had been living a lie. By her going to church every week and saying she was a Christian didn't mean she was a Christ follower when she continued to act as if her heart hadn't been changed.Fortunately, she was able to break free of the hold of being a Christian by name only after a devastating blow to her life.Lots of Bible verses and examples of how she allowed God to worked in her heart and life to help her become a true follower of Christ.A good book for new and mature Christians as well as those exploring what it means to become a true follower of Christ.There are some formatting issues but they didn't bother me.

Donna's "Apologies from a Repentant Christian," is a stirring, inspiring book that will challenge you to consider the claims of Jesus and the Bible, and to consider whether or not you are a Christian in Name Only, as the author was was. This book recounts how Donna, who had always identified as a Christian, actually realized in 2008 that she was masquerading. Following a legitmate encounter with the good news of Jesus, Donna and her husband's life were transformed, and God has used them both greatly. One of the biggest strengths of this book is it's use of Scripture - here is a good example:"Through Scripture, we were encouraged to practice humility in our relationship with one another (Philippians 2:5-11). We learned about the road to spiritual maturity and to press on toward the goal which Christ called us to (Philippians 3:12-16)."Good stuff, and a very encouraging book! I also enjoyed how Donna included the lyrics to several hymns that were quite inspiring. Recommended book - give it a shot!

Strengths:The Author has actual talent and is a decent writer, she should continue to write and will only improve. When I started reading I was a bit skeptical, due to the cover. However, beginning from the first page I immediately felt as if I was sitting across from the author and she was speaking directly to me. The story is written with great prose and is easy to follow. The author shows a great deal of regret and remorse towards her past behavior and mentions specific interactions and moments of healing, as well as others to she apologizes to in writing.Weakness:The book is 19 chapters, which is way too much. For maximum impact this should have been cut in half, and written with a little more emphasis on the author’s past self. It is a personal story, which anyone would have to decide how much detail to share. However, as a reader I would have liked to have deeper connection and more specificity which would have showed a more complete transformation. i.e an addict going from homeless junkie to 5 years clean and sober now college graduate.Overall:Apologies: From a Repentant Christian, is a story of transformation, healing, regret and personal growth. The book is thought out well, but could have been cut down to half the size for a stronger impact. As it is, it will most likely appeal to Ultra Christians due to its heavy usage of Christian verbiage. However, there is an actual human being telling a personal story of regret, transformation, and growth. The cover of the book is true to the content, as it is heavily focused on reaffirming the authors belief in “Christ in all things.” Sadly, to say this may frighten away those who are not already in line with this mindset. Even though, the author’s story is a good one, which many can learn from and enjoy. Lastly, the story relies heavily on the idea of “the new version vs the old version.” Personal growth and change is not a “one and done,” as sobriety is a daily endeavor. If anyone hopes to better themselves, they need to remember to look in the mirror daily and learn to accept others “as they are.”

It was such an encouragement to know the power of transformation in anyone's life and gives hope for a future. I am grateful to have read it.

An unfathomable tragedy. An excellent, thoroughly researched book on the Jonestown massacre. Unlike other more self-serving books written on this subject, this one is not only well researched but a first hand account of what happened to the Ryan delegation in Guyana - as author Tim Reiterman accompanied the group as a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner, and was wounded in the attack. One of those killed, along with Congressman Ryan, and two newsmen from NBC, was fellow Examiner staff photographer Greg Robinson. This story is told in its entirety, from Jim Jones' poor, neglected childhood, to his discovery that he possessed a mesmerizing ability to influence people, to his days of political influence and increasing secrecy connected to his organization, and finally to his and his followers deaths. The tale of his improbable rise as chameleon/huckster, reverend, and cult leader, and then subsequent descent into complete diabolical madness is nothing short of astonishing. I was 30 when this happened and I remember reading about it in detail, however many, many facts hereto unknown about Jones, the people around him, and the People's Temple are unearthed here - and it's fascinating. I love true crime, and although this genre is considered History/Religion and not True Crime, the final outcome, in the words of one survivor, was never about suicide, but instead about mass murder, and as such I would put this in a category with Helter Skelter in terms of its chilling effect, and ability to open one's eyes to the limits of human evil.

Good book on the subject. Pretty much the definitive work on Jim Jones, Peoples Temple, and Jonestown. It's a long read, and it can be pretty disturbing at times. It's well written, and, at times, hard to put down. Although I did put it down half way through for a few weeks, because it was so intense. I needed a break from Jim Jones. I have a very incidental connection to Jonestown, which has always reinforced my interest in the subject. I was in the US Army during November 1978 and on leave in Maryland when the Jonestown murder/suicides occurred. In December I caught a USAF MAC C-141 flight from Andrews AFB to Travis AFB in Northern California. The plane was coming from Dover AFB and was loaded with dozens of the remains of people who died in Jonestown. In fact, I was the only living passenger on that flight. It was just the crew, me, and dozens of the dead from Jonestown. I had a copy of the Newsweek special Jonestown edition to read while on the flight. Every now and then I would look up from the magazine at those stacks of aluminum containers imagining those poor people inside.

At only 10 yrs old when this tragedy happened, I wanted to find out how & why. So far the book has been delving deep into the people who were his family. Update: this book is taking me awhile, mostly b/c you get real insight & stories of how truly "wicked" this human was to innocent people. I found myself mad laying it down. I still have last chapters of book remaining. A book that makes you wonder , how. One thing that's precise is you'll see over & over, his need to control, manipulate, and want to be "special". But proves to be narcissistic, arrogant, a sociopath in getting to the top. A person that will be in history for all the wrong reasons.

I picked up this book because I've heard much about Jonestown and its lingering affect on our culture and I wanted to know more about Jim Jones and how he developed his cult. This book covers every aspect of his life and how he built his following starting in Indiana and ending in Guyana. I found the book to be excessively long, but it is very well written and researched.Generally I found Jim Jones to be a disturbing and manipulative sociopath and continually asked myself how he could have been stopped sooner from destroying the lives of the people around him. The author does a great job of fitting the Peoples Temple movement into its context in recent American history and he knows his subject exceedingly well.This is truly an American story and an American tragedy revolving around a dyed-in-the-wool con artist who swindled thousands of people out of their life savings, their freedom and eventually their own lives.

The most detailed book I have come across on the people and the incidents that led to the 'Guyana Tragedy.' I had not known about Sharon's murder-suicide plot in Georgetown until I heard Stephon Jones speaking about it in a documentary. I disagree with the author on one point; I think the CBS docudrama that came out in 1980 did a very good job of portraying Jones as a drug-addicted madman, drunk on his own power. This is not a story that fits neatly into a four-hour network TV miniseries. Not to mention, that movie appeared to use composite characters and some made-up names. Not easy to follow, for those seeking information. And, don't waste your time with Layton-Blakey's book or the Johnston-Kohl book. You get very, very few details about the Temple in either. On a side note - when I started the book my Kindle estimated reading time at about 14 hours; yours may vary.

I bought this for my sister who is started college this year, and I really wish I had had it when I was starting college! The book is fun but also keeps it real--I was really impressed by their treatment of very important (but sensitive) topics like dealing with sexual assault and mental health problems that are all-too-common on college campuses. The book literally answers every questions I would have wanted to know--everything from being in a sorority, dealing with professors and TAs, how to ace a test, etc. Highly recommend for incoming freshmen, but also older students--the book is full of resources and helpful tips to have on hand in ANY situation.

I read this book last night (free on Kindle Unlimited) and ordered it today for 4 high school grads that I coach. As a professor and social psychologist, I found the advice on a wide range of topics (e.g., how to stay safe on campus, how to talk to professors, how to study and manage time, how to navigate social media, how to apply for jobs and internships) to be accurate and on-target, and written in a style that will appeal to 18 year olds (i.e., informal and engaging, but not too “cutesy”). As someone who teaches human sexuality, I also appreciated the advice on navigating friendships, romantic relationships, and hookups (which is super important, but not something that most parents feel comfortable talking about); the information in these chapters was accurate, relevant, realistic, and not too preachy. My only qualm about the book is that it consistently presumed heterosexuality (e.g., referring to crushes as “boy toys” or “studs”, when it would have been just as easy to use more inclusive terminology or to acknowledge that some readers will have a same-sex crush), especially given research showing that women tend to be “sexually fluid” (or changing), especially in the college years (numbers are often underreported because of stigma, but it’s not unlikely that up to 10% of the readers of the book will have crushes on women). If you can get over that, the book is an easy read and a great resource for someone about to go off to college. One tip I would add: Take your own printer to college! In my experience, students who rely on campus printer labs are much more likely to turn in work late (or not at all) because they try to print at the last minute and run into problems (e.g., the server goes down, the printer lab is closed, there is a long line of students waiting); I’ve also seen that students with their own printers are much more likely to proofread printed versions of their work before turning it in, which results in a higher quality product (and consequently a higher grade).

As a senior in college, I already know a large amount of information provided in this book. BUT for an incoming college freshman, this book will give tons of helpful information that you won't get anywhere else! Most of what is in here I learned from friends and my peers around me over time. But for someone who is just starting out and doesn't know anything about the college world, this book is for you. As for college juniors and seniors, the last few chapters are extremely helpful. It gives you everything you need to know about how to apply for internships and how to make your online presence professional.

Absolutely loved this book! So well done and so helpful as I prepare for college!! Great tips on things I was super stressed about - like balancing work and fun and being safe without my parents around!

I'm starting college this fall. I literally read this who book today. I have Amazon Prime so it got here in 2 days. I was really excited to receive this book.It's well-written, accurate and answers all the questions you could possibly have for college. Whether you're a rising Freshman or a grad student, this is a great book.It answers questions that pertain to health, sex, scheduling, professors, dating, Greek life and so much more. I actually learned some of the information I read. I'm very happy I bought this book.I recommend it to high school students, college students and to parents looks for a gift for their high school student or graduating student.

Huge fan of the incredibly easy series. It got me through nursing school 8 years ago and still aids me in brushing up and test prep. I'm a visual learner and the silly cartoons really help me retain the content of the section. I'm studying for my CCRN and this is a huge help. I really like the new addition and the color pages are great! Highly recommend as a quick refresh for the visual learner!

BASIC review, but Hemodynamics (which is really what critical care is about) doesn't have it's own section and the section that it does have is VERY short, and isn't specific enough, especially when it's describing waveforms. Buy the AACN one. Regret wasting my money on this.

I found The ICU Book by Marino more informative. Don't buy this book if you are looking for detailed information; this is more of an overview.

Every ICU/CCU nurse should get this book very simple and breaks things down really easy.

This was not what I expected at all. I have just graduated nursing school, going into the ICU, and was looking for a study guide but this was not that whatsoever. This was so basic. It explained things in narratives and just overall was not good.

My Wife changed jobs and is new to ICU/CCU and wanted this book as a reference / refresher and has said it's helpful. As long as she's happy, I'm happy!

I love these books! I am an RN and I just started in a progressive care unit, and so far, this book has been helpful at refreshing my mind of the different disease processes and treatment regimens involved, along with nursing interventions. In nursing school, the Med-Surg Nursing Made Incredibly Easy book helped out so much during clinicals.
