I love Katie Fforde's books, and this one is no exception. She always has realistic female protagonists and I love that the male protagonist in this one wants to make perfume. I devoured it in two days!

I have not read this book as I find the digital price $24.31 exhorbitant. Pity as I usually buy her books as they come out but can no longer justify this.

Review

Praise for The Life to Come Winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award Shortlisted for the Stella Prize Short-listed for the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction Longlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award Shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Literary Award for Fiction “For a novel concerned with dislocation, there's a lot of grounding humor in The Life to Come. Most of it comes at the expense of Pippa and her ilk, but de Kretser's observations are so spot on, you'll forgive her even as you cringe.” ―Amelia Lester, The New York Times Book Review “Reflecting a pessimism that's almost refreshing in its candor, The Life to Come is mordantly skeptical about mankind's capacity for empathy. . . .The novel is filled with brilliant, quick-fire characterizations. . . . A scalpel-sharp work of Flaubertian social realism―but now the provincial setting whose customs it mercilessly dissects encompasses all Australia, if not all the world.” ―Sam Sacks, Wall Street Journal “De Kretser's writing captures, with unflagging wit, grace and subtlety, the spiritual as well as physical journeys of people on the move―between cultures, mindsets and stages of growth. . . . She writes about the aura and texture of places with breath-stopping virtuosity. . . . De Kretser excels at mordant takedowns―of right-on dinner parties, literary festivals where TV chefs hog the limelight, faddy diets―but she grants all her people the mystery of inwardness.” ―Boyd Tonkin, The Financial Times “The acclaimed Australian writer’s fifth novel spans continents―set in Australia, France and her native Sri Lanka―and weaves together disparate narratives that raise uncomfortable questions about Australian society, self-satisfied liberalism and modern life.” ―Claire Fallon, Huffington Post “The two best novels of the year are both Australian . . . Michelle de Kretser's surprising and profound The Life to Come has an unfashionable aspect: it is richly funny, and excoriating about current pieties. The lucidity and joy of de Kretser's prose, too, is a wonder to behold.” ―Philip Hensher, The Spectator “Flowing from poignancy to eloquence to delightfully wry satire, The Life to Come's richness of prose and character is meant to be savored and reflected upon.” ―Meg Nola, Foreword Reviews “A very stylized book―think Ali Smith or Virginia Woolf.” ―Reading Women “[The] characters give de Kretser, herself a native of Sri Lanka who lives in Sydney, a chance to explore the complexity of societies in the long throes of mistreatment of their ethnic minorities, whether those are Aboriginal people, Indians, Sri Lankans in Australia, or Algerians in Paris. . . . There is also much pleasure to be found in de Kretser's lovely prose, whose every sentence fiercely shines. A thought-provoking novel of both beauty and brains.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “[De Kretser] has again written a perceptive and articulate novel that blends acute observation and well-chosen details to create a sweeping story that is painfully close to home. With fascinating characters and beautifully nuanced writing, The Life to Come is a powerful exploration of the human condition and a compelling examination of how we look at each other and ourselves.” ―Booklist (starred review) “This marvelous stylistic work, dense with lush descriptions of scents, Asian food, Australian trees and flowers, weather, and Sydney neighborhoods, reflects on issues of race, immigration, and what it means to be an Australian: so different from America―or is it? Highly recommended.” ―Library Journal (starred review) “While each section can stand alone, together they create a joyful and mournful meditation on the endless small pleasures and complications of life: the difficulties of immigration, the logistics of infidelity, the creativity and insight born of jealousy and spite. In de Kretser’s sure-footed and often surprising prose, life is rendered as something that’s 'tedious yet require[s] concentration, like a standard-issue dream.'” ―Publishers Weekly “It's a complex work; personally, as someone who grew up in the inner west of Sydney and who enrolled as a student in Paris, I found your descriptions of place beautiful and yet startling in their accuracy.” ―The Garret “The Life to Come is a rich, sensory evocation of the sights and smells of a city from which the real substance of sights and smells appears to have been eviscerated. Celeste asks her mother, 'Why do Australians go on so much about food?,' and receives the reply: 'Because they live in a country of no importance.'” ―Public Books “Michelle de Kretser is a deliberately discomforting writer. She beguiles with beautiful descriptions, of sparkling Sydney (and Paris and Sri Lanka) and sharply drawn characters; then she sharpens her pencil on both characters and readers, with a decided poke at foibles and affectations, woolly politics and misguided ambition.” ―ABC (Australia) “The Life to Come namechecks―with a characteristically ironic flourish―Patrick White and Christina Stead (‘safely great … safely dead’), and includes a tribute to the ‘fearless’ Shirley Hazzard. De Kretser belongs in that estimable company. She is every bit their equal as a stylist, and in her willingness to apply the acid.” ―James Ley, Sydney Review of Books “The Life to Come is a mesmerising novel about the stories we tell and don’t tell ourselves as individuals, as societies, and as nations.” ―Better Reading “Five days into 2018, is it possible we already have the year’s best novel? I’ll be amazed if anything surpasses this compulsive, exquisitely light-footed narrative composed of four loosely linked episodes seesawing between a sprawling cast spread over three continents. . . . One might puzzle over what it all adds up to, but complaining about the lack of an overarching plot feels churlish given the other riches on offer in this glorious novel.” ―Anthony Cummins, The Daily Mail (UK) “The Life to Come . . . has five overlapping stories which, while being character-driven, reflect a particular concern with history and place. . . .Michelle de Kretser is a writer of unsentimental humanity.” ―Donald McDonald, thespectator.co.uk “There is an enjoyably acute observation on almost every page of Michelle de Kretser's new novel. . . . As always, Michelle de Kretser offers a wide compassionate view to contain the cruel specific thoughts and accounts of past wrongs.” ―Lindsay Duguid, The Times Literary Supplement (London) “This spellbinding story follows a cast of characters as they chase their ideal version of life. Incredibly perceptive and uncannily contemporary, it is a satirical take on modern society.” ―Rabeea Saleem, Book Riot UK “Michelle de Kretser understands the power of detail, its ability to encapsulate and to express bigger matters. . . . The Life to Come is an astonishing book, fiercely intelligent, wise and subtle, unhurried and generous.” ―Anna Rogers, New Zealand Listener “The Life to Come is a remarkable achievement . . . . It's a book of myriad miniature overlapping stories, shot through with subtle leitmotifs, which brilliantly captures the expectant thrum of a world where the future is always about to happen.” ―The Saturday Paper (Australia) “With wit and aplomb, Michelle de Kretser unpacks the eloquent silences that surround us to reveal the issues that we deny, suppress and ignore, exposing our flawed assumptions about other people. And she is wickedly funny.” ―Lisa Hill, ANZ LitLovers LitBlog “Superb, ambitious and deeply moving.” ―Geordie Williamson, Weekend Australian “The Life to Come is an intense reading experience. . . . Michelle de Kretser has written a comic lament of disarming force.” ―Michael McGirr, The Age “De Kretser's great strength as a writer is her capacity to render the sensory and the sensual. . . . She is tactile and hyper-observant, as are her characters; the pleasure of this novel is in watching her watch them.” ―Beejay Silcox, Australian Book Review “The Life to Come. . .has five overlapping stories which, while being character-driven, reflect a particular concern with history and place. . . .Michelle de Kretser is a writer of unsentimental humanity.” ―The Spectator “Although The Life to Come is not a political novel, it is a book that captures the political, social and economic zeitgeist. The beautifully drawn and complex characters are all creatures of the time.” ―Brigid Delaney, Guardian Australia “Exhilaratingly good writing. . . . Each page yields sparkling sentences and keen observations.” ―Suzi Feay, Literary Review (UK)

By the time I got to the last lot of sad, unappealing characters- Bunty and Christabel? - I really had lost the will to live. I normally wouldn't read a book I dislike as much as this to the end but I wanted to see if they are all connected in some way - if there was some meaning to the fragmented stories? Maybe I missed the grand reunion as I speed skimmed to the end but it looked like they didn't! Only the self absorbed Pippa seemed to unite everybody but what happened to Celeste alone and lovelorn in Paris? She was the most interesting character. The prose was at times very good and there were some interesting insights into the conversations that go on in our heads - curating ourselves for the outside world via social media, our clothes, opinions etc. But, the way the characters are shallowly sketched and then abandoned left me feeling really, what was it all for??

Based on a review in the Wall Street Journal, I downloaded a sample to my Kindle. The sample was charming, the characters interesting. Now I'm into II (I guess it's part or chapter), and the characters aren't particularly charming or interesting, and they never do anything. The narration is about them, who they are, their background, etc. yet they never actually do anything in real time, or when they do, like Ash's trip with this friend to the sheep ranch, nothing of any consequence happens, except Ash "experiences" it. Kretser is an excellent writer. The prose is first class. But there's just so very little story going on that, for me, it's not worth it. I'm afraid this will be one of those books I never finish.

Didn't really care about the characters. Nothing compelling in the stories. Some really nice bits (like the comments about the lack of respect for Australian literature in academia). The structure of the individual stories linked by a common character is interesting but not enough to carry the disjointed book. Overall I found it very disappointing, bordering on depressing

Found this book really difficult to get involved in .

Way too waffley. Michelle does good descriptions but then fills the book with an overdose of detailed descriptions of character's clothing, food on plates, etc. Boring. Couldn't even force myself to finish the book.

great 5 stars I would have liked more on Celeste and I wanted Christobel to be told she wasnot the lesbian in the book of pippa,s

This was a book for the decade. I will be disappointed if this one is not shortlisted for the Booker Prize. What a great read.

“But imagination had nothing to do with reason: its promise of change came from the same hidden, tidal source as catastrophe and luck. It was a lever that would provide whatever shift Pippa required. There would be cracking open and mess; things would be different, if not necessarily better. After a while, life would return to its monotonous groove.”The Life To Come is the fifth full-length novel by award-winning Sri Lankan-born Australian author, Michelle de Kretser. This novel in five parts details events in the lives of several Australians: sometimes their lives intersect, sometimes they appear in the background of each other’s stories, sometimes they are sometimes loosely connected. A common character in all parts is Pippa Reynolds, an aspiring author whose journey is followed from student to writer to wife and mother.George Meshaw is an author who has a minor influence on Pippa’s writing. Sri Lankan-born Ashoka Fernando appears in the wings of Pippa’s story via his girlfriend Cassie, who appears to have a fascination with a certain Tamil shopkeeper. Celeste Harrison is a translator whose life intersects with Pippa’s while Pippa is in Paris working on a novel. Pippa’s own story details her marriage to violinist, Matt Elkinson and certain insecurities which spur her into action. Sri Lankan expatriates, Christabel and Bunty’s lives also intersect with Pippa’s while they are next-door neighbours and become unwitting characters in her most successful novel.De Kretser gives the reader an abundance of exquisite descriptive prose: “In the moist, grey summer dawns, George felt he was walking into a book he had read long ago” and “In Sydney he recovered lost mornings of steamy grey warmth. The city was regulated and hygienic – occidental – yet voluptuously receptive to chaos and filth. It knew the elemental, antique drama of the sea” and “The light was deep blue and close-woven; whole rows of buildings looked as if they had been cut out with care and glued against the sky” are a few examples.More samples of too many to include here: “Her memory, a steel plate on which lists of vocabulary, rules governing the subjunctive, and a handful of French poems had been engraved forever, had areas eaten out by rust. Faces fell through it – lately even her mother’s had disappeared” and “The street was the kind where the buildings breathed into each other’s faces, and evening arrived at half-past three” and “The moon rose, and the sea kept running up to the land for a gossip.”While some scenes in each of the parts appear to echo despite the distinct perspective of the narrators, if the reader is looking for a book where all the stories are completed and issues resolved, where everything tied with a neat bow, then this is not that book. We get glimpses into people’s lives, but not always fully realised ones. Perhaps that is de Kretser’s intention. As for her characters, the reader can be forgiven for wondering if de Kretser actually likes any of them very much: many are not characters that come across as engaging, not characters the reader will fall in love with, care about, hope for, to any great extent. They are flawed, but not always charmingly so: some are pretentious, quite unlikeable, some are unendearingly quirky, and hard to connect with. But perhaps this is also intentional. De Kretser explores several topical issues: refugees, ostentatious philanthropy, the attitude of Australians abroad, and the state of Australian Literature. She has a unique writing style and this is a compelling read.

The Quintland Sisters: A Novel, by Shelley Wood

Review

“Wood cleverly combines fact and fiction in a fast-paced novel that will leave readers contemplating how the best intentions of government intervention can have dire, unanticipated consequences.” (Publishers Weekly)“...an ambitious, meticulously researched, and imaginative debut novel that is engrossing and compelling. Exploring the shared sisterhood of the quintuplets’ caretakers and the trouble with unwanted celebrity, this heartwarming novel will win over loyal readers of Patricia Harman, Jodi Picoult, and Carol Cassella.” (Booklist)“The Quintland Sisters is an impeccably researched historical novel that will enthrall you. From the moment Shelley Wood introduced the remarkable Dionne quintuplets, I was utterly captivated...I could not get this story out of my head long after I finished reading it.” (Joanna Goodman, author of The Home for Unwanted Girls)“This gorgeously written novel about miracles, love and resilience is perfect for fans of Joanna Goodman.” (Marissa Stapley, bestselling author of Mating for Life and Things to Do When It’s Raining)“...a stunning novel...Meticulously researched and sensitively told, this book is a journey not to be missed.” (Heather Young, author of The Lost Girls)“...Wood deftly captures the fascinating collisions between faith and science, powerful and poor, and the tensions that arise when a rural town and its inhabitants are cast under the relentless scrutiny of the public’s obsession with one extraordinary family.” (Elise Hooper, author of The Other Alcott and Learning to See)

Emma cares for them through their perilous first days and when the government decides to remove the babies from their francophone parents, making them wards of the British king, Emma signs on as their nurse. Over 6,000 daily visitors come to ogle the identical “Quints” playing in their custom-built playground; at the height of the Great Depression the tourism and advertising dollars pour in. With her quirky eye for detail, Emma records every strange twist of events in her private journals. As the fight over custody and revenues turns increasingly explosive, Emma is torn between the fishbowl sanctuary of Quintland and the wider world, now teetering on the brink of war. Very enjoyable book. I started getting restless about 3/4 of the way through because it started to repeat itself. Face it, the quintuplets didn’t really do new and exciting things but the author was able to add some romance. I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because I would have liked to have more of the main characters story. The ending was a surprise.

Somewhere in the back of our minds, we all probably remember hearing about the Dionne quintuplets – the first full set of quintuplets to survive past birth. But I doubt many know their names or anything at all about them. Did you even know that there are only two surviving Dionne quintuplets today?I had no idea that that quintuplets lived their first decade of life as “animals in a zoo”. They were confined within a “hospital” built across the road from the house they were born in and where the rest of their family lived. The story is told from the perspective of a young woman who was with them at the moment of their birth and continued to live with the girls for several years. Emma Trimpany, aged 17, was pushed into midwifery by her mother with the Dionnes being her first - and only - client. She was present for the harrowing birth of Yvonne, Annette, Cécile, Marie, and Émilie. The quintuplets were born to a French-Canadian couple who already had five children. Due to the uniqueness of the situation, the Canadian government made the babies wards of the British king. Hired to care for them were Dr. Dafoe, who delivered the babies and is credited for their survival, and a small staff of nurses which included Emma who kept a detailed journal on the girls. It is estimated that each day there were over 6000 visitors come to view the babies at “Quintland”, as the “hospital” came to be known. They were a commercial entity bringing in millions of dollars to the Canadian government and advertising companies. Much was made of the girls being identical, but what makes this book so interesting is the focus on the uniqueness of each girl. “One loves bumblebees and bath time; one loves thunderstorms but is scared of the dark; one for whom the only thing better than building sand castles is getting to knock them all down; one who loves to finger-paint and knows how to tie her shoes; one who hates beets but is not the least bit squeamish about blood.”I felt sickened to read of the battles regarding custody and the products the girls may have used, such as which company’s corn syrup they first used. But my heart was warmed by the efforts made by some of the nurses to protect the girls from their celebrity and the greedy power struggles that surrounded them. I enjoyed the scenes describing the children as typical little mischief makers and moments of tenderness. It is obvious that Wood did extensive research in preparation for writing her book. She includes several archived newspaper articles from the Toronto Star. She also weaves in a couple of love stories. The writing was superb and I loved the book until the train scene toward the end. What??!! Was VERY disappointed.

Reality television – or any television – hadn’t been invented yet when the Dionne Quintuplets were born in Canada in 1934, but if it had been, their lives wouldn’t have been any less tragic, or crazy.Their story, as told by Emma Trimpany, a seventeen-year-old midwife-in-training, is the dichotomy of the the fish and the fishbowl. Inside, Emma sees each of the five “Quintland Sisters” – ripped from their family by the doctors who saw them as a means to fame and fortune – as a unique person, each with a name, a personality, her own personhood. But to outsiders it’s the similarities that attract, and people come from miles around to gawk at the girls in their specially-built playground. What struck me about this book, which is a fictional retelling of a true story, is how much the Dionne Quintuplets’ story is so similar to the stories we see today – the OctoMom media frenzy ended up with similar product placement opportunities, and, while not precisely the same, the Hensel twins (the famous conjoined twins) have likewise been media darlings their entire lives.Wood does an amazing job capturing the period, the Dionne family’s distress and confusion – sure, they’re uneducated and poor, but that doesn’t make them unfit parents. The juxtaposition of Depression-era austerity with the lavishness given to the girls, and not their parents was also quite well shown. I liked the device of using Emily as the point of view character, as she was closer in class to the Dionnes and closer in education to the doctors… she was the perfect betwixt-and-between person to let us see all perspectives.Overall, I found the story to be unsettling, but I believe that was the intent. It should be unsettling to read about children being treated more like an exhibition than people.Goes well with tea and strawberry cupcakes. Carnival food.

In some ways, given how common multiple births are today, it's amazing and jaw dropping to read about what happened to the Dionne quintuplets. Told from the perspective of their young nanny Emma, it covers their first five years. Emma's an interesting character (she's not a real person) and her view of things, as well as her involvement provides the fiction element of a story which has become better known over the years. There are parts of this which I found annoying - Wood is especially unkind to the mom- but others that were intriguing. There's a plot line which seemed incongruous at first and made the end less than satisfying for me. That said, it was a good read. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. For fans of historical fiction.

Don't panic. This journal IS in stock. I ordered mine in mid-Jan and got it within a week. Mel also posts updates re: stock on her FB and Instagram. This is without a doubt the most EFFECTIVE journal I've ever used. I haven't hit every day on this journal since I've had it but it's nonetheless impacted my daily life.A lot of modern productivity methods (e.g. GTD) measure success by the number of tasks you check off in a day. This fails because modern life presents us with a paralyzing amount of options, then FOMO leads us to chip away daily at Columns A through F. As a result, we make very little headway on one specific column. Over time, this starts to erode our sense of what's important, as we've been giving each column equal attention. If you're like me, you find yourself doing a lot in a day and going to be bed feeling empty. And then, if you're still like me, you burn out. For a loooong time. You wake up wondering where all that time went and what your purpose in life is. When the hamster stops running the wheel, he remembers he's in a cage.Annie Dillard wrote: How we spend our days is of course how we spend our lives. This journal can help you redirect your energy to the things that really matter to you. Here are my notes and observations after having it for a week:1. It takes me less than two minutes to fill out in the morning. Even if your brain is fuzzy, it gets the juices flowing because it has you fill in the date and place. Next are blanks that establish your state of mind ("Today I feel..."), putting you IN THE PRESENT MOMENT where you are honest with yourself. It follows up with a plan of action ("To feel more energized I can...."). Right away, you have something you can do - use Mel's 5 Second rule to bust through any resistance. This momentum sets you up to fill out the rest of the journal without overthinking.2. You list a top project for the day, directing your focus to ONE area of your life. This is the gamechanger. Once you write this down, the other stuff automatically feels less pressing and stressful. Why? Because you're not giving the pile of dishes in the sink and the afternoon stafff meeting the same importance as growing your business or writing your book or your relationships.3. Your Top Project for the day is further bolstered by listing why the project is important to you. If your heart's not in the project, you'll see it on the page. Next to this is a section to write down a small action you can take to move forward and a section for gratitude. Now you have something actionable to do right away AND you're feeling good because you've reminded yourself of what's awesome in your life.4. In the corner, there is a section where you schedule when you'll stop working. This puts the pressure on, in a good way. A lot of us, esp. chronic procrastinators, tend to access Flow more readily when we're under the gun, like when we cram for a test or, you know, the first few times you used the Pomodoro technique and it worked. Rather than default to the workday 5 or 6, you might try playing with stop times. By setting a stop time, you're scheduling your free time. My free time has felt richer since starting this.5. The next page has a gridded section for brain dump - great for recording your flashes of brilliance, quotes, lists etc. And beside it, a small planning space that runs from 6am to 8pm where you can fill in a schedule. Note: there is NO CALENDAR in this journal! It works for me because I keep all my scheduled stuff in Google Calendar anyway and pencil in what's relevant. This also means you won't have huge chunks of unusable pages (that might make you feel like a failure!) if you fall off the journal for a few weeks.6. The Confidence Corner issues challenges to get you out of your comfort zone. It suggests activities that could become powerful new habits, like taking a cold shower, organizing your space, calling relatives, going for a walk with a friend, and journaling. All doable; all GOOD FOR YOU. There is a follow-up on the next day that asks you to reflect on whether you did or didn't do the challenge and why. This is like having Mel in your pocket, coaching you.7. The journal itself is nice and sturdy. It lays flat so you can keep it open all day. There are instructions on how to use it at the very front and a few pages of free space in the back for drawing or whatever you need. It's very no-frills and THIS IS GOOD. The simplicity provides just enough structure that it doesn't feel stifling but freeing. If you write in it every day, it will last you a few months. I don't use it daily and it could very well last me a year. You don't have to shoehorn your life into the journal's calendar, it works with you. Love this.Personal changes I've noticed since I started using this journal:- I find myself more focused and less inclined to multitask.- Goal-setting is easier because I'm actively prioritizing my life every day.- What matters to me and what I want to do with my life is becoming clearer every day. Dudes, this is huge. Every day, this journal has me check in with myself and stay aware of what I want to spend my life doing. My intuition is back, baby!- Increased mindfulness and awareness of goals even on days I don't use the journal. And I always pick it up again.- Resistance is still there, but that's what the 5 Second Rule is for. Keep working it.This journal is not for everyone but it might be the one for YOU, especially if all others have failed you. It's helped me break through my stuck-ness and burn out and take charge of my life again. So fellow desperados and dreamers, give it a shot! Re-commit to the great work of your life!

What a blessing to get this in time to welcome the new year! This is a perfect morning companion to steer my day to the right direction. I just love the layout and all the components per spread. There’s enough space for my daily to do’s, schedule/appointments as well as personal growth, long and short term growth and goals. The book lays flat which i appreciate very much plus the pages are smooth to the touch. High quality and elegant all around. Absolutely great for writing and journaling! Love it!!!

I am an “all over the place” entrepreneur who has tried several journal/planner methods only to get bored with them after a week. Still, I hoped to add a little more structure to my days.I’m a big fan of Mel’s methods and no BS style so I decided her journal might be worth checking out. I’ve now been using it for a month (which is already saying something - that’s a new record for me!)The way it’s laid out definitely seems to be tapping into my unconscious. At first the questions/ structure seemed a little obvious and maybe a tad redundant. Over time I’m realizing is that redundancy is training my brain to circle back around to what is important when I get off track. After wasting money on other planners I was nervous to buy this one but I have already made my money back in time-well-spent!

It is nice and I like the daily challenges. Whenever I didn't like a challenge, I just wrote in my own. But I didn't realize how short the journal was when I bought it. It only has enough pages for 60 days. There is a "Free Zone" every 5 pages, which has a quote on one side and a blank page on the other for you to doodle I guess? I saw this as a total waste. Then, at the end is 7 FULL front and back blank pages for no apparent reason but to waste space and trees. I liked the concept and layout of the journal part but with all the wasted space and it only working for 2 months, that does not deserve this price point of $16.

This is a journal / daily calendar of sorts. The layout is great, no issues there. Well made with fun quotes throughout. Here lies the problem: There are only 60 days worth of calendaring / journaling. Each "week" only has five days in it before it goes to a quote and a free space. Basically, to get an entire year out of this you'd have to buy six of them. Again, it's a fun concept but for the price, I expected way more than 60 days. Going to return it.

I love Mel Robbins and she is amazing. The 5 Second Rule was a great way to get me off my but. I like the journal because its interactive versus me having to fill up empty pages with my thoughts, plans or goals. I like the fact also it takes pretty much what we all ned to map out a day and then breaks it into chunks. Also its not dated so you can miss a day and pick back up. My only suggestion is that the would it is bound make it hard to bend backwards so you have to leave both pages lying flat which puts the spiral in the way. Its also not meant to be a journal for really long periods, its probably got about 60 actually days to do then you would need to order another one.

I can't say enough about the line of pocket genius books, we have almost every single one and my kids love them. They are packed full of pictures and info, you are not left wanting. I recommend the big book, and every other they offer as well. Fantastic idea, great for little hands.....and pockets!

My six year old loves this book. The pictures are full color! It is a small book, but really nice quality. Lots of bugs to learn about in here. These little pocket genius books are really great for kids. I’m impressed with them.

I'm a big fan of the DK Pocket Genius series, have already purchased several of these books, and bought the Bugs book as a gift for young sons of a friend. The folks who publish the Pocket Genius series deserve a lot of credit for packing an enormous amount of informative detail and useful pictures into the small format of these books. On taking a quick look through the "Bugs" book after its arrival, however, I spotted some things that didn't seem quite right. So I did a little research of my own and came away with the impression that the research that went into at least some of the entries in this particular book may have been a little cursory and perhaps carried out by someone without extensive knowledge of the subject. For example:On page 42, the "Long-winged Great Cockroach" or "Megaloblatta longipennis" is described as the "largest winged cockroach" and its habitat is given as Peru, Ecuador and Panama. When I lived in El Salvador, enormous winged cockroaches fluttered around my bedroom from time to time, so I looked up Megaloblatta longipennis to see if that was the flying cockroach I was familiar with. I found that Magaloblatta longipennis is only the second largest winged cockroach and that Megaloblatta blaberoides, whose habitat includes Central America in general, is the largest winged cockroach. On page 87, Actias luna is referred to as the American "Moon Moth." I've been fascinated by these beautiful moths since I was a child and confirmed that the common name for Actias luna is "Luna Moth," not "Moon Moth."On page 119, the Latin name for the mange mite is given as "Sarcoptes scabie." The Latin name I found for this mite is "Sarcoptes scabiei"--note the final "i." I researched this entry because the description in Bugs states that this mite "causes a disease called mange in dogs." I think it's worth mentioning that Sarcoptes scabiei actually causes mange not only in dogs but in humans along with cats and a wide variety of other animals. On page 123, "Latrodectus mactans" is given as the Latin name for "Northern widow spider," and the photograph shows a spider with a solid black abdomen. "Latrodectus mactans" is actually the Latin name for the Southern Black Widow spider, which carries the distinctive red hourglass on its abdomen. There is an all-black Latrodectus spider--the Northern Black Widow spider, whose Latin name is "Latrodectus variolus."I'm by no means an expert on insects and other bugs and worry that some of the other entries may contain inaccuracies, so I won't be giving this book to my friend's sons. I would be glad to purchase a revised version reflecting more research in the individual entries.

My grandson and granddaughter in Kindergarten and First Grade use this book to identify the bugs that they find. I like the way it teaches classification, and I must admit that I have learned a lot as well.

Gave this book to my Entomologist sister and she spends hours comparing the real things with the book.

Perfect for kids, easy to carry and lots of great info and colorful clear pictures.

Grandson loves these "pocket sized" book. Perfect for younger, smaller hands.

My granddaughter loves to ask me what a certain bug is and I say it is a crumb, she squats down and looks up and says "BUG" amd I say oh I must be in the wrong focal but I can't stoop to the spot where I can tell for sure so now we just look in the and I tell her how to pronounce the word. A great book that has helped us both.

This book is soooooooo cool!It walks you through complex accounting, using the simplicity of a lemonade stand. I’ve been an entrepreneur for 10 years and don’t see it lacking anything, as its critics suggest. Sure, you can supplement it with something that has more complex examples, but, the necessitaties are all there.A few other things:Visual aid, - I swear, if it’s one type of book that needs visual aid, its business books, particularly accounting. YET MOST DON’T HAVE IT. This one does.Active learning, - you really are guided by the editorial to keep your own books. I’m talking line by line instructions that a kid can grasp one what it is and what to put down. Storification, - Storifying something like accounting is BRILLIANT and often difficult. Lines like, “Mom and Dad want to give you a lesson about running a business and without warning, decide to charge you a GLASS RENTAL FEE of two dollars!!!! Talk about tough love! Worse yet, the next day, your best friend (or the kid you thought was your best friend) announces that he or she wants to be paid one dollar for a sign he or she painted for the lemonade stand. Stop and figure out your expenses.”Puts you in the middle of a business movie, and keeps you on the edge of your seat, paying attention and exercising your fiscal intelligence.Need I say more?FIVE STARS!!!!

Even though I nerd out on money in business, I know that the vast majority of business owners don’t go into business to have unfettered access to spreadsheets. They want to build artisan chairs or run a retail store that provides their community with the best IT in 4 counties. The financial side is kinda like toilet paper that gets stuck to the bottom of your shoe as you leave a public restroom – it’s along for the ride. And to try and pick up accounting principles while you’re running a whole entire business – that’s laughable.Enter The Accounting Game by Darrell Mullis and Judith Orloff. It looks like it belongs in my 8-year-old’s backpack, but as I read and worked through it the past few days I discovered the fact that it looks like a children’s book (and reads like one) is exactly why it’s so powerful. It uses the quintessential lemonade stand to show exactly how what you do in business each and every day shows up in those mysterious: Balance Sheets; Income Statements; and Cash StatementsWhat was once blurry becomes clear. Three hours is about all it takes to get through the book and your business life will be forever changed. Not bad for $12. A word of advice – get the paperback version, a pencil and eraser. This is one book not best read on the Kindle.

It takes us through the book keeping of running an imaginary business of selling lemonades. Even the business is simple, but the accounting processes and scenarios are thorough. To get the most of this book (whether you are teaching a middle schooler or yourself), follow through by creating a simple spreadsheet and filling the cells of the balance sheet, income statement and cash flows each time questions are asked in the book (just to test that we understand).Recommended book if you are very new to business accounting procedures and want simple explanations on creating financial reports. Alas, the principles. If you are not new to the accounting procedures of a business, then look elsewhere!

Very didatic book focusing on the visual step-by-step aspect, but around chapter 7 onwards it becomes a little difficult to follow all the numbers and keep coming back and forth to fill the forms, specially the cash flow statement. Sometimes it is not clear which page or financial statement we are suposed to be based upon in order to fill the next one.

It was very slow and repetitive, often repeating sentences and terms as if I was a child learning how to read. I could only tolerate the first few chapters before giving up reading anymore. The pace of the book really drove me crazy. It does break down the basics of accounting into bite-sized chunks and I'm sure you can get a lot out of this book if you're patient and can tolerate the "dumbing down". Don't get me wrong, I like watered-down examples but this was too much. Also, the worksheet in each chapter rely on information in much earlier parts of the book. It expects you to remember numbers / details instead of refreshing the information from previous chapters :( That was the most disappointing and aggravating part.

Review

"...a new and somewhat unprecedented (at least in Aristotle scholarship) genre of collection.... Jon Miller's introduction surveys major ethical philosophers writing between approximately 1870 and 1960 such as Henry Sidgwick, G. E. Moore, and R. M. Hare to show what Miller calls a surprising episode in the reception of Aristotle's Ethics..." Thornton C. Lockwood, Quinnipiac University, Bryn Mawr Classical Review
