They will never write a book like this about Trump!

This is a very nice coffee table book.....filled with beautiful pictures of President Obama showing his softest side. I am a big fan of his and this book is a nice keepsake for me to remember his presidency. He has always exhibited such class and compassion.

This coffee table book is pretty simple. It alternates pictures of the USA's 44th president hugging people with supportive, positive quotes from him. My favorite pictures are those of Obama hugging children. They are high quality photographs of happy moments with a personable leader.

Such warm beautiful pictures. Brought comfort and great memories of a better time for The USA

Purchased for my newborn nephew to have some positive associations of presidential figures.

I’m an Obama-manic! I didn’t always agree with his policies. But he was a man who loved people. This book in pictures shows that

The picture and quotes in this book are wo derful and uplifting! I highly recommend it to everyone! A nice reminder of his wit and compassion!

Given the idiot now in the Oval Office, this book will make you cry, make you remember how blessed we were for 8 years of Obama, and hopefully inspire us all to elect someone of similar character in 2020.

The subtitle - "silence, awareness, and contemplation" - summarizes the focus of this magnificent book perfectly. I've been practicing centering prayer daily for the past six months (after a long hiatus), and Laird's insights have helped me immensely to see beneath (beyond? through?) the basic practice of "when thoughts arise, simply return to your sacred word." No New Age-y book, this work contains dozens and dozens of footnoted quotes from traditional contemplative masters such as St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Augustine, and the author of The Cloud of Unknowing. You'll also likely be introduced to lesser-known fathers such as Evagrius the Solitary (4th Century).

Gently insightful, quiet in tone, thoroughly researched, this book takes readers still further into silence, awareness and contemplation than the preceding book, "Into the Silent Land". Anecdotes from modern day experience, the wisdom of desert and church fathers, saints, poetry, art and novels are all gathered in support and illustration of the book's themes. They are used in such a way that the reader wants to go back to the original texts, so I refreshed myself with Seamus Heaney's poetry, picked up the writings of Evagrius for the first time and resolved to return to St. Teresa of Avila. Contemplation informs every part of life, so it is fitting that every part of life should meet with contemplation in this book.I was grateful that the difficulties of contemplation were investigated at some depth. Some points of practice about which I was unsure after reading "Into the Silent Land" became much clearer for me, producing shifts and growth that were palpable in my own life. "A Sunlit Absence" is best read after "Into the Silent Land" because there is a clear development and deepening from one text to the next. I shall read this book much more than once.

I found this book to be an excellent follow-up to his first book on the subject of contemplation. Even though I lived as a cloistered contemplative monk for many years & have read a great deal on this topic & have given many contemplative retreats, I still found this book to be very insightful, with many quotes from teachers in this tradition as well as a very unique & beautiful way of presenting. A very clear, concise & poetic presentation. I highly recommend this book along with its companion book.Rev. Robert J. Powell

Martin Laird rocks! Whether you have been a practitioner of contemplative prayer for along time or are a neophyte it is obvious that Fr. Laird knows the land. His insights are well grounded, reassuring, and oft enlightening in their own right. The "A Sunlit Absence" arrived in a most timely fashion and was as spiffy as the merchant promised. Shopping doesn't get much better than this ! Except maybe if you have Prime!

This is a richly and wisely informed exploration of the value and place that "awareness" has in the practice of Contemplative Prayer. Awareness is shown to have an honored place in wisdom tradition of the Desert Fathers and Mothers of the early Early Christian Movement. Yet, this seems to be a neglected aspect of the modern enthusiasm for Centering Prayer. Martin Laird, a historical theological, redresses this neglect in a work that has significant relevance for those of us moderns who struggle to break free from the tyranny of thoughts and feelings..

I loved this book by Fr. Martin. In it, he describes the 2 dynamics of contemplative practice as both deepening concentration and expanding awareness. The title of the book really does say it all as he probes our experience of the Silence and it's relationship to true awareness in everyday life experiences. I'd always wondered about my own internal commentary and he speaks much about the difference between thoughts which ebb and flow through the mind and the incessant commentary that has a tendency to become attached and which then leads us into all kinds of "reactionary" ways of being.I appreciate his wonderful insight and find myself returning to the book for meditation on particularly meaningful passages.

This is a good companion to Martin Laird's other work, "Into the Silent Land" which focus more on the basics of how to enter into contemplative prayer. "A Sunlit Absence" looks at various aspects of the practice, especially with an eye to seeing where problems and barriers develop and how to overcome them. His examples from teaching contemplation to college students of various levels of faith development was both interesting and enlightening. A good book to take along with you for a retreat and read a chapter at a time over a couple days.

I have read both of Fr. Laird's books on Contemplative Prayer and both are excellent as far as his teaching as well as inspiration regarding this important gift of Christian Meditation. I have read this one twice and will read it again as time allows. Highly recommended for those seeking to understand and grow in their practice of contemplative prayer and living.

Review

From KIRKUS REVIEWS:BOOK REVIEW   A biography for middle-grade readers tells the story of the first woman elected to federal office in the United States.  Aronson (Bronislaw Huberman, 2018) introduces young readers to Jeannette Rankin (1880-1973), who was elected to Congress twice and voted against the United States' entry into both world wars. The book takes readers on a chronological tour of her life, from her childhood on a Montana ranch to her work as part of the women's suffrage movement and social work, moving into her political career and anti-war activism. It brings the story full circle with her late-in-life opposition to the Vietnam War, when a new generation of activists looked up to her as a role model.Through well-documented research--the backmatter includes citations, a bibliography, and a timeline of Rankin's life--Aronson provides a thorough overview of her subject. He includes plenty of specific detail ("She was handed a bouquet of flowers and then driven down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol in an open car, waving to supporters as she was escorted by 25 flag-draped cars") while sticking to documented facts, and the numerous photographs and scanned newspaper images add to the reader's understanding of the various time periods. Aronson's prose is straightforward, conveying information without rhetorical flourishes: "On November 6, 1916, Rankin had the opportunity to vote for the first time in her life in a main election--and she voted for herself." He does a good job of establishing Rankin's historical noteworthiness but not overselling her legislative accomplishments, acknowledging the symbolic value of her initial election and her votes against the wars but also noting that the votes cost her re-elections in both cases. He also draws links between her relatively short congressional career and her lifelong activism. The concise narrative provides an age-appropriate amount of information, and it will be a useful addition to middle-school library shelves--particularly in light of the historic number of women elected to Congress last November.    A well-organized and thoroughly researched account of a remarkable historical figure. From THE US REVIEW OF BOOKSJeannetteRankin: America's First Congresswomanby Peter AronsonDouble M Books bookreview by Michelle Jacobs "Ibelieved then as I do now that women are the ones who must be concerned withthe needs and development of the human race."This second book in The Groundbreaker Series formiddle-grade readers is a biography of Jeannette Rankin, America's firstcongresswoman, who was elected in 1916. Born in Montana in 1880, Rankin'spioneering spirit is evident throughout her early life on her family's ranchwhere her parents instilled strong values and then later at college where shebegins to set a course for her life that is not a traditional trajectory towardmarriage and family. Instead, she begins to seek career opportunities in socialwork and eventually becomes a leading suffrage advocate working tirelessly topush for a woman's right to vote. As a congresswoman, she solidifies a legacyof pacifism, casting a vote against entering World War I and World War II.Rankin was recognized throughout her life for her work asa feminist and for her anti-war activism. Her life story is inspiring andrelevant for today's young readers looking for historical role models.Informative and interesting, Aronson illuminates the life of Rankin with thiswell-researched biography of her extraordinary life. Organized chronologicallyand sprinkled with black and white photographs, each stage of her life isfilled out with details of her aspirations and ambitions to impact society andgovernment. Young readers, parents, and educators can draw a direct line fromRankin's life to the current wave of female congresswomen who made history inthe 2018 midterm elections. This important book solidifies the historicalrecord in the minds of young people who may be more familiar with famousfeminist forbearers like Susan B. Anthony or Elizabeth Cady Stanton.Rankin's name deserves to be known and her life studiedfor the legacy she built to empower women. Her determination to have a voice inthe decisions affecting all Americans but particularly women and childrenmotivated her to run for office. In the current era of the #metoo movement andrecent possible judicial and legislative impacts on women, the life of thisimportant pioneer can serve as a model for public service and political power.Though some of her votes as the first female congresswoman were largelysymbolic, having a voice in a room full of men still reverberates through time.Aronson describes the realities of the unfortunate timing of Rankin's firstvote--a vote against entering World War I. It was not a popular vote, and it wasone she would repeat during World War II. But she held firm that she wasrepresenting the mothers of the country who would be sending husbands and sonsto fight and die. She also felt that because she could not fight in the war asa woman, it was not fair to send someone else to fight. She stood her grounddespite holding unpopular opinions about war and peace. Late in her life, shealso joined the anti-war movement during the Vietnam era.As Aronson chronicles these periods of Rankin's life withrich detail, the story of her life leaps along with ease and superbreadability. Aronson captures the quiet ambition of one woman propelled intothe historic spotlight as she campaigns for a woman's right to vote as acitizen and as a representative.RECOMMENDED by the US Review

About the Author

I am a former journalist and a former lawyer and now write children's books full-time. I began this new endeavor after seeing my teenage daughters read mostly dystopian-themed books, It inspired me to write books about real people or novels with a strong dose of reality. Therefore, I started writing two series for middle-grade readers. The first is my Groundbreaker Series, biographies about extraordinary people doing extraordinary things, for middle-grade readers. The first book in this series, Bronislaw Huberman: From child prodigy to hero, the violinist who saved Jewish musicians from the Holocaust, was published in July 2018. The second series is the Mandalay Hawk adventures, novels also for middle-grade readers. Mandalay Hawk's Dilemma: The United States of Anthropocene, is due out in late 2019. The series focuses on three young teenagers as they strive to solve the world's biggest problems. First up, the biggest problem the world currently faces: global warming. There's a lot of KRAAP: Kids Revolt Against Adult Power, with a march on Washington unlike any other and rapping in the Oval Office to a captive president. Women in Space: 23 Stories of First Flights, Scientific Missions, and Gravity-Breaking Adventures (Women of Action), by Karen Bush Gibson

From School Library Journal

Gr 7–10—In the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States, the first woman in space was the Soviet, Valentina Tereshkova, in 1963. America's first female astronaut, Sally Ride, went into space in 1983. This book details the stories of 19 others from across the globe who overcame obstacles of prejudice to fly in space. They include four Soviet women, Canadian astronaut Roberta Bondar, Japanese doctor Chiaki Mukai, French astronaut Claude Andre-Deshays Haignere, and Yi Soyeon, the first Korean in space. The story of the Mercury 13 is fascinating; 15 women were selected by NASA in the late 1950s. Successful pilots and scientists, they trained, as did the (male) crew of the Mercury 7, but then were not allowed to travel. Each chapter contains photographs and "Learn More" suggested readings. Sidebars are scattered throughout the book. This volume is a companion to the author's Women Aviators (Chicago Review, 2013) and an important addition to women's-history collections.—Patricia Ann Owens, formerly with Illinois Eastern Community Colls., Mt. Carmel

From Booklist

Gibson follows up Women Aviators (2013) with a similar, international gallery of pioneering women who reached for the stars (or, in the notorious case of the Mercury 13, were deliberately prevented from doing so). As in the previous title, she incorporates thorough research and a strong feminist message into her accounts, covering her subjects’ specific accomplishments on earth and in space, while also surveying the general history of space flight and astronaut training with a special focus on the gender prejudice that had to be battled and (mostly) overcome. Along with the usual suspects, such as Sally Ride and Mae Jemison, there are many lesser-known women, from Svetlana Savitskaya (the second Russian woman in space) to Kalpana Chawla, who died aboard the space shuttle Columbia, and a number of other women from a variety of countries. This illuminating gathering of role models is also bolstered with sheaves of source notes and useful references to further resources. Grades 6-9. --John Peters

This book had several stories that are seldom told in regular classes. This book was comfortable reading, and it described the women in sufficient detail to understand the mark the individuals made in history.Often the book describes work that was attributed to others long ago. Some of these names do not come up in simple Internet searches for famous women from the space program. Thanks!

Book arrived in time and in great condition. I plan to read it, along with other books about inspiring women in WWI, WWII, American Revolution, American Frontier, etc.

Great book! great historical overview about space exploration in general and then focusing on women's journey in space

my 4 year old daughter is really into astronauts and space and I thought this book would be perfect for her! We haven't started reading it just yet, but we're both happy with having it. She's very excited to learn about women in space.

So I’ve been on a space kick lately, reading a LOT of books about space and astronauts. In my hunt this book, Women in Space: 23 stories of first flights, scientific missions, and gravity-breaking adventures by Karen Bush Gibson, really caught my attention, I never knew that there were women being tested for the Mercury space program. I never knew the Soviets launched a woman into space before the US did. This book is in the teen section at my local library but I’d recommend it for anyone 4th grade and up, maybe even lower depending on their reading level. This book first talks about the Mercury 13, women who underwent all of the same tests as the male Mercury 7 astronauts. Each of these women was an accomplished pilot. They underwent the tests often completing them with better results than the male astronauts but were not allowed to be part of the program. One was made a “NASA consultant” that was almost never consulted. When the women tried to get changes made allowing them to be part of the program, appealing to then Vice President Lyndon Johnson who as a Senator had fought for the space program they were rejected. One reports that when she spoke to Johnson about it he told her “We can’t let you into space, if we did we’d have to let the Blacks go to space, and then the Mexican Americans, all the minorities would want to go.” Now this is obviously a secondhand quote but WOW. I realize this was before the Civil Rights Movement really got underway and made a difference but to hear that these words came from a man that would soon be President of the United States is seriously disconcerting. The book continues with stories of four female Soviet Cosmonauts, two of which went to space before the first American woman. Before their individual stories there is a short chapter giving a bit of the history of the Soviet space program and comparisons between it and the US program at NASA.Next up a chapter on American women in space beginning with Sally Ride the first American woman in space, it also tells of women walking in space, piloting the shuttle, commanding the shuttle and commanding the Space Station, and ends with the story of Barbara Morgan the back up to Christa Mcauliffe, teacher who died in the 1986 Challenger explosion (a site that gives me shivers to this day and I only saw it on tv unlike a friend of mine who living in FL at the time was standing outside her elementary school watching the launch live) previously there is the story of another American female astronaut that was on that flight. The last section of the book begins with a summary of the space programs of other countries and then continues with stories of female astronauts from several other countries including another member of the Challenger crew. The exciting thing to me is that while it took a long time for women to get to space it seems in the US at least that women are really making headway, 1:4 astronauts are women (compared to 1:7 in the police force nationwide), the 2013 class of astronauts is half women (a fact I was excited to see on a special display at the St. Louis Science Center for Women’s History Month.)

Begins with the story of The Mercury 13: The True Story of Thirteen Women and the Dream of Space Flight and these 13 women's attempt to join the space program. But, due to fear by men and concern for menstruation and its impact upon decision making they were declined.Meanwhile, in Russia they sent some women up. A list of the 55 women to date who have been to space and list of space shuttle names. Each of the female Russian Cosmonauts have a short insightful biography and a photo. From there are short biographies of the American women and a photo followed by other women from around the world who have had a chance.Mentions that a Space Shuttle flight would cost $450 million, seats to space cost $20 million.Includes a glossary and index. Insightful.

#83,382 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The book had the wrong story inside! We have almost all these Little House books and LOVE them. My kid was so excited to read this one. We opened it up and it was a totally different story (nothing about a birthday) and incomplete at that. Pictures show the description on the front cover (what we were expecting) and the other picture is how the book ends. This book only talks about the Sabbath....nothing at all related to a birthday. WTH is this??? Sounds like some other customers also got this version too.... totally weird.

My 8-year-old daughter loves the LH books. I started her on these picture books when she was a toddler. She especially loves this book. She loves the "Pop goes the Weasel" song in it, and she loves that it's about a birthday. If you have a little one that's interested in LH, (or that you want to be interested in it) this is an excellent addition to your library.

The "My First Little House" books are fabulous! I started buying them for my daughter when she was 3, and she's almost 4 1/2 and still loves reading them. We have quite a few of these books now and I would eventually like to purchase the entire series. It was also a coincidence that we started reading them when we were on vacation in Wisconsin, so my daughter thought it was neat that Laura and Mary lived there and she was there too!One funny thing (depending on your sense of humor) - I was explaining to my daughter that Laura and Mary lived a long time ago, so of course her next question was, "Are they dead now?" and this was a frequent topic of conversation for a while when we were reading the books! Not in a bad or morbid way, she was just curious. And we gave one of these books to my daughter's school class a a gift, and apparently one of the children in her class also commented on this! Just thought I'd mention it...

Carefully packaged and enjoyed on her birthday. 8 year old girl

I grew up reading the Little House Series...now there's a series that lends itself nicely toward little kids. The language is nice and simple to the point where my 3yr. old was excited to listen to it (she could understand the whole book) and yet it's not too simple to be boring to younger elementary kids. My 7yr. old likes to read them by himself! I now own the original set for myself, the "My First Little House" set for my kids and I've even purchased books from this series for kids of my closest friends.

ok but a little on the high side in price

We love all the stories!!!! You can't go wrong with any of them!!!

These books are a favorite in our house. Take your young reader back to enjoy a simpler time and place! The illustrations are wonderful. The stories are wholesome and nostalgic. Highly recommended!

I use to rely on hoping my loved ones would visit me in my dreams. I’d wait and wait and feel disappointed when I didn’t see signs from them. After reading Where Did You Go, and using Christina Rasmussen’s methods, I was able to connect immediately with those I have lost. Now I know I have the power to see what is hidden. We all can! Highly recommend this book.

Christina’s book “Second Firsts” was a recommendation from someone in my Facebook Widows group. I enjoyed it but felt I wasn’t really “there yet” when it came to dating etc. I could not wait to get my hands on this book! I’ve been a student of mysticism for many years studying anything I can get my hands on in that regard. As a Hospice nurse I meet so many people that can use this wisdom as well! I bought four more copies for Christmas gifts. Thank you for the validation that “love never dies” Christina! 💜🙏🏻☮️

I have read Second Firsts and now WDYG and also participated in some of Christina’s online groups. She and her books have been life changing for me. They are some of the only books I have been able to finish since my loss four years ago because they touch me that deeply. And Christina is a genuine and amazing human being that I am honored to know and call a friend. I can’t recommend this book enough if you are looking to go deeper, reestablish your spirituality, connection with self and others, including lost loves. It goes deep and offers guided meditations to help strengthen our bonds with ourselves and our world, our beliefs, and is exactly what I needed at this stage in my grief.

Just started reading the book. I recently lost my wife and so far it has given a different prospective.

I have been paralyzed by grief since losing my Dad in December 2014. Christina's book has shown me that I can still connect with my Dad in my journey's and that those we love are never truly gone.

Once again, Christina provides meaningful tools for people searching for meaning and healing with loss. A follow up to her Second Firsts book, Where Did You Go is written directly from the heart yet backed by science. Her passion for this subject and for her readers is clear with each page. Regardless of your belief, I recommend this book as it may help you find your own path.

Upon reading the introduction I knew this book would bring me to new visions, new insights, a deeper belief. We all have our own vision of what happens after we leave this physical world. We all have our own beliefs, whether that is religious or spiritual. Christina helps you to see and feel the energy that surrounds us each and every day. She gently guides you to discover or rediscover the knowledge that is deep within you. This book is for anyone/everyone looking for healing, discovery, knowledge, life and love. Thank you Christina for opening me back up to my heart, to my loves, to my life. Blessings to you. Patricia J. Mosca

Amazing bookAmazing journeyI needed help to truly connect with my loved ones and to truly connect to a better lifeWe think this world is all there usWe are very mistakenChristina Rasmussen will help you acces the other universeIt has been here all alongGives me clarity and hope
