When I was living in Korea studying Taekwondo, I noticed how many Korean martial artists were also avid tennis players. In fact, I had one instructor explain that Taekwondo instruction was similar to teaching tennis, and he was correct. Both sports focus on coordinating hands, feet, eye focus, and strategy in finding openings in your opponent's defense, deceiving the opponent about the direction of attack, while frustrating your opponent's attempt to do the same to you. So even though I have not played tennis since college and really have no interest in the game, I read this book from the point of view of the mental aspects of competition, whether tennis, handball or mixed martial arts. For example, take "Triple Coordination": "Visual ball recognition paired with footwork patterns is the ground work of tennis." This is absolutely valid in Taekwondo when we note an opponent's shifting balance, body weight, stance, etc. all while staying a moving target ourselves. In fact, you could take this book, substitute terms, and without a lot of clever editing, come up with a good text for the martial artist. So I recommend this book to anyone looking for a compendium of principles for any one-to-one competition. It's short, to the point, and a bargain.

While not a long book, it's full of great concepts that will help you to learn and play tennis better. For coaches and parents, this book provides a fresh take on some timeless principles, and in some ways reexamines the game from a completely different perspective. What if Tennis could be a game again, one that you play, not a workplace, but a source of joy. I have already experimented with each of the strategies contained, and found that my students respond with enthusiasm.

The seven strategies are deceptively simple, but aren't all effective strategies? These strategies help overcome the vague language about the zone, flow, focus, staying in the moment, getting out of your head, etc. I now have the tools I need to help my son get better.

As a coach who has read a TON of tennis books out there, I can safely say that this book has given me knowledge and PRACTICAL STRATEGIES to use that I hadn't heard before. And they are incredibly powerful for immediately getting my students more engaged in lessons, as well as improving their result in "ball recognition" and getting in "the zone". Love the book so far but I am returning this copy for another one. the quality of the print through out the booklet over Half the booklet or more was hard to read it the print was so light, in consistent and blurry. See attached picture. Picture came out with better print that the naked eye.

If you plan on running the NYC Marathon read this book. Even if you are not running it, if you aspire to run it, read this book. Seriously. I read this before I ran NYC 2017 and it calmed my race nerves and gave me wonderful journeys to reflect on during my own 26.2

I ran my first NYC Marathon this past year, the first of what I hope to be many, following my dad who had done it a few times when I was a child. A Race Like No Other captures the experience, from Staten Island though the finish line in Central Park (right down to the frustration of trying to get OUT of the park once the race is over!). The writing moves back and forth across several stories that are being told simultaneously, keeping you interested as the miles go by. The stories cover elite pro's to recreational runners to those who are running for a higher purpose. You will find yourself caring about each of the individuals described. What came through really beautifully and what is not really appreciated by those outside the sport, is the spirit of sportsmanship and sportswomanship that is so central to the sport. Particularly compelling as regards the elite athletes is the description of the battle between Paula and Wami for the woman's win, but it is framed against Paula's baby daughter being held by Wami's husband before the race, and being held by Wami herself after the race. This conjured up images of the great Grete Waitz, who lost first place in the olympic marathon, only to become Godmother to the son of her rival. In what other sport will you see this kind of class, honor, and mutual respect, particularly when prize money and endorsement deals etc. are on the line? A Race Like No Other set out to capture the spirit of the NYC Marathon, and succeeds.

27.08.2015 I'm by preparing to NYC Marathon which I take a part on 1st November 2015. I was looking on internet to find information about this beautiful event which started in 1970 under leadership of Fred Lebov. I must say that this book is really what I was looking for. There is description of such interesting personalities from sports stars to common but extraordinary people which take a part in NYC Marathon. Personally I will be 4th time in NYC, always during NYC marathon but as marathoner first time. This book tells me how great personalities build this amazing city of such mixed cultures and ideas. I strongly recommend for each reader especially marathoner of NYC Marathon events.

Great book, so well written!

The book is well written but somewhat too ambitious. It tried to capture the stories of too many people, leaving too big a gap in between each story. I found myself flipping forward just to see what happened to Paula.

The author does a good job of profiling a wide range of runners: professionals from Kenya and England; older grandmas; cancer survivors; run of the mill middle aged; former substance abusers, etc.I take one star off because there is no negative or critical angle. It is all positive description, no critique no downsides given.

Having run the NYM several times,(19)I am very aware of the 26 miles of "sidelines". Each block along the way has its own story to tell as Ms. Robbins has done for several. The stories of the runners makes it warm reading. If you run marathons you know that the elite runners have a story worth reading. Bottom line is every NYM runner and supporter is a winner. Like Nike says, "Just Do It!"

Really makes you want to be a part of this magnificent and wholly unique experience - the first weekend every November.

I lived in Seattle for 12 years, and still miss it every day. I have quite a collection of cookbooks from my time there, and use them all. Truth be told, I bought my fish at Pure Foods, down the hall from the Pike Place Fish guys--and next to the best fruit place in the Market, Sosio's. But I loved the enthusiasm--and philosophy--of the fish tossers. When I saw they had a new cookbook, I knew it would be good. It's FABULOUS! Not only recipes, right from the guys and their families, but also some how-to, some history, some Seattle information, and some great photos of the fishmongers. The food photos are outstanding!! So beautiful and fresh-looking, you can practically smell them. I've already marked a dozen recipes, can't wait to start.

Excellent fish cookbook with some very tempting recipes. I haven't tried any yet but know they will be exceptional after readingthe lists of ingredients.

Gave as a gift but has awesome recipes and beautiful pictures to match. Happy Cooking!

Then you go "behind the scenes" at Pike Place Fish to meet the crew and understand their philosophy. They are not just a fish market!Starting with a priceless brief education on the basics; how to filet a salmon, how to shuck an oyster, how to throw a fish (!) the recipes are broken down into mood catching phrases: Rise and Shine (such as Dungeness Crab and Bacon Quiche :) Let's get this Party Started and Smokin', Grillin' and Chillin, for example. Even Clambake has its own section.I really enjoy how the contents are designed to flow and give a holistic understanding from selecting seafood, preparing awesome easy to follow recipes (yes, Paella for 10), complete with tips on sauces and seasonings, etc.They make it look so fun too, this is a great book!

I felt like the PP fishmongers were telling me the story in person -- very consistent with their style & the recipes are also great.

My husband and I visited the Pike Place Fish Guys when we were in Seattle so I was thrilled when I found this recipe book. Its too simple"I believe that view was wrong .On closer inspection I realised that this book is invaluable . I have used it several times in the past several years . The authors have really simplified the material and they get to the point instead of dawdling along . It is by no means comprehensive but provides you with the basics in a easy and friendly way.This book is a must for all medical students . Neuroanatomy is a great subject and is understandable.

If you are interested in the process of writing this is a good book. I am not sure I always agree with her assessments of various writers--Oscar Wilde for example--but Gornick is thoughtful and probing. She speaks with knowledge and experience on one of the most slippery facets of writing: the narrator's voice. This may be one of the very best books on the subject.

It feels disrespectful to offer anything but praise for a book that captured the distance it takes to execute memoir pieces successfully. For writers wrangling with their personal material, trying to turn it into an engaging narrative that along the way may enlighten the reader, this is the premiere text. My purpose was to know what it took and this book describes the process with convincing clarity. What I did not enjoy about the book was its format. It was organized like a text with samples of mostly obscure memoirs and personal essays that the author then critiqued for you. Without having read those works in their original form I had only a cursory interest in her description of the content of those pieces and found myself reading hurriedly to get to the part about technique.When I purchased the book I knew nothing about it and mistakenly expected a discussion of memoir writing without frills. The book was more than that. Without a doubt, I think it is filled with essential information for aspiring memoir writers. If you happen to be an instructor yourself, there are questions you may find useful at the back of the book.

I've read many books on writing, but this is one of the best I've ever read for personal essay and memoir. Gornick really gets to the heart of what we who write from personal experience need to accomplish. It will make you go back and look - again - at your writing and see where you've missed or where you've succeeded. Highly recommend it.

Gornick's obsession is persona, the truth-seeking and truth-speaking narrator and how that partial, constructed self relates to the tale being told. When you try to apply her interesting principles to some works you like, especially if they are very scenic and narrative-driven, it will drive you crazy. Ditto if you are a writer trying to do what she says you should do. But it's fascinating. And she discusses some really interesting essays and memoirs, many of them uncommon or forgotten classics.

I bought this book because Vivian Gornick is an excellent nonfiction writer. It was recommended as a good critique of the process of writing informal personal essays and memoirs. Her discussion of what makes a good personal essay was excellent. How the essay and the memoir are different forms was cogent and insightful I highly recommend this book as one of several which can educate writers on how to go about writing personal, and experiential, pieces.

I have been a student at Stanford University for the last year and one of the teachers recommended this book to me. Reading it for the first time I had the feeling that Ms Gornick wrote it just for me. It was exactly what I needed. So many books about writing just talk about the writer's experiences but this one examines the genre of memoir writing like a doctor at an autopsy. What she writes gave me so many moments where I was saying to myself, yes, that is exactly it. And sometimes she writes things that explain a situation that I had not thought about and seeing it in print gave me that rare gift of true enlightenment

There is the situation, and there is the story, and if you can figure out the basics behind that seemingly innocuous statement, then you can figure out how to be a very effective memoir writer. Only about half of this book is about memoir writing, and I got it specifically for that portion. The essay portion, while fine, did little for me. I would definitely overall recommend this book.

This book was a mandatory read for my MFA - Non Fiction program. I am very happy that it was, because I gained a great deal of insight from reading it.I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about writing quality Non Fiction.

The language in which mathematicians describe their work only compounds the difficulty of learning math for few are fluent in this succinct language. Unfortunately, it is this language almost all introductory mathematical textbooks inevitably conform to, at the cost of the reader's comprehension. Dr. Stone, overcomes this language rift by explaining the math in a friendly, familiar way. He further takes the care to ensure appropriate time is spent clarifying each topic in a variety of ways (in case one does not make much sense). Stone also provides appendices as reference for the reader who may need more explanation or refreshers. This kind of guidance through mathematical theory is inherently absent in the mathematical language as its core is precision, brevity, and removal of all redundancy.It is his very thoughtful explanation and walkthrough which makes me confidence to say that Dr. James V Stone's introduction to information theory is conceivably the best book I have read; not just in regards to information theory but in regards to mathematics (applied or otherwise) as a whole.The reader is guided through Shannon's seminal work in a way that is applicable regardless of the reader's background (mathematics, art, biology, journalism, etc). Dr. Stone helps the reader integrate the core concepts of information theory so that the math behind it becomes a tool for the reader to use, rather than to be perplexed by.The book is a joy to read, and a privilege to learn from.For those who have read the review this far, I study mathematics and neuroscience. As such, I have read my fair share of mathematical textbooks, mathematical introductions, and mathematical books for "dummies" (as I often feel myself). In my experience math never stops being complex, and try as many might to simply it, none have succeeded as well as Dr. Stone. I was versed in information theory before reading this book. The intuition and deep understanding / appreciation for this field that I have gained from the book is unheard-of. It is intuition that makes a great mathematician, and this book will teach you to think intuitively. The clarity of Dr. Stone's work is so profound I have little other way to describe how accessible it is to all walks of life.While many may not consider this a "mathematical textbook," let Dr. Stone's style be an example for how math should initially be taught. This book works well as a standalone text, and as a supplement to more intricate texts in regard to information theory. Do not let the title introduction fool you, Dr. Stone manages to maintain the intricacies of the field in a way often overlooked.

Information Theory: A tutorial Introduction is a highly readable first account of Shannon's mathematical theory of communication, now known as information theory. It assumes little prior knowledge and discusses both information with respect to discrete and continuous random variables. It is highly readable and a great gentle introduction to the theory. It is intuitive rather than rigorous and gives very clear examples of how to use information and coding theory to frame certain problems.The book starts out by defining the units of information, bits and then how to quantify information so that it has the properties that we would like it to have namely additive, continuous, maximal with respect to certain probability measures and symmetry. He goes through some of the various examples to give a feel of how information can be considered and how many means of communication include much redundancy. The author first tackles discrete random variables and their entropy and information. Through basic ideas like the less likely a piece of information is the more information it has leads to the construction of a measure of information which fits with Shannon's conditions. From that construction of entropy the author then goes through and explores its repercussions with things like dice examples. The explanations are clear and its hard not to feel like you are really making some progress on what is supposed to be a very difficult subject. The author moves from information to coding theory, which is the practical application of the subject and introduces ideas like channel capacity, how much information can be transmitted in a noiseless channel, conditional expectations and coding schemes that can deliver results arbitrarily close to the channel capacity. The author spends some time discussing redundancy in English and coding schemes for how to create efficient blocks for the language which is really interesting. One learns very quickly through the tutorials that trying to have blocks of code which are equiprobable is the way to get to the best coding efficiency and maximize information transmission. The author then moves on to noisy channels, which is far more practical and further evolves the readers intuition. One learns how to add redundancy to codes to make them resilient to noise contamination. The author discusses continuous random variables and their information. The information of a continuous variable, which is a more difficult subject, can be considered infinite given the events possible are uncountable, but with noise this is avoided and the author explains the ideas well so that the content remains clear. The author discusses mutual information in the continuous case giving the reader a strong understanding of joint and marginal probability distributions. With these tools the author goes back to channel capacity in a noisy channel for continuous variables and re-discusses the ideas from discrete variables in the new light. The author then moves on from communication related information theory to entropy and physics. These chapters were to give a feel of the similarity and topics like thermodynamics and quantum information are lightly touched.Information Theory is a highly readable account of what is usually a very technical subject. The reader will come through it with an intuitive feel for information and how transmission of information across various channels and coding schemes to do this effectively. The only thing is there are no exercises so the confidence will be to some extent somewhat false as reading and implementing are very different things. That being said as an introductory text before tackling more mathematical works I think this is very helpful. I have both this as well as the author's work on Bayes and I prefer the content of this. Definitely recommended.

Life is too short to read good books, we only have time for great books. And for technical subjects this is the difference between developing an intuitive understanding of the topic vs drowning in jargon.This book is a great example of an author really taking the time to hone in on the minimally sufficient prose and exposition to make a challenging topic accessible. I'd like to thank the author for writing an excellent book that enriched my understanding of this wonderful field.

Jess knows what he's talking about AND he practices what he preaches. However, that is NOT what makes him the perfect teacher for a media course. Jess Todtfeld has left no stone unturned, yet the magic of the book is that it is not at all overwhelming. It is a pretty quick read that covers an enormous amount of information--particularly in today's media, digital and social media Age. The book addresses both strategic and tactical issues surrounding being interviewed in various media formats extremely well. But, as if that's not enough, Todtfeld ends the book with helpful information about how to showcase all of your interviews (i.e., television, radio, podcast, Internet, etc.) in the most professional way possible. He cuts to the chase to solve some very common problems that so many people have; for instance, I didn't exactly know what to do in order to put my radio and podcast interviews on YouTube but now I know! He makes things simple to understand which is so important because it is too easy to just say: "I don't really know what my 20-year old nephew just told me to do so I am just going to wait and do it later". "Later" has a funny way of never showing up, meanwhile a TV or radio producer has looked at Mary Reilly's YouTube Channel and said "She's too inexperienced" because I didn't have all of my content up there.

About the Author

There is still very little known about the life of Vivian Maier. What is known is that she was born in New York in 1926 and worked as a nanny for a family on Chicago’s North Shore during the 50s and 60s. Seemingly without a family of her own, the children she cared for eventually acted as caregivers for Maier herself in the autumn of her life. She took hundreds of thousands of photographs in her lifetime, but never shared them with anyone. Maier lost possession of her art when her storage locker was sold off for non-payment. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 83.John Maloof is an author and street photographer involved in historic preservation of Chicago’s Northwest Side. He discovered the first negatives of Vivian Maier’s work in 2007 while compiling a book about the history of the neighborhood where he grew up.Geoff Dyer’s books include But Beautiful (Picador, 2009), Yoga For People Who Can’t Be Bothered To Do It (Vintage, 2004), The Ongoing Moment (Vintage, 2007) winner of the ICP Infinity Award for writing on photography, the novels Paris Trance (Picador, 2010) and Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi (Vintage, 2010), and a collection of essays, Otherwise Known as the Human Condition (Graywolf Press, 2011).

The book is like a time capsule of photos.. Look at the people, their clothes, the constructions, the buildings, the stores, their signs, the cars, the streets.. It will take you back in time and you'll feel immersed in that time.The low rating isn't for the content, the content is fabulous.. The rating is for the production quality of the book. Here are my suggestion to the publisher: 1) Avoid converting black & white to sepia. 2) Review the tone banding; photos look good digitally but were not printing as good.

As many reviewers have pointed out, this book is indeed a revelation. This woman was an extraordinary photographer. The printing is fine, in spite of what some have said - maybe the book had a bad print run - but I'm surprised that all the photos were sepia-toned. Nothing in the text says anything about her wanting them this way, or having printed with sepia, and it looks a bit artificial. The cover is in true black and white; I think the rest of the photos should be.

This is a wonderful look into early urban American life, sans agenda, through the skillful and creative eyes of Vivian Maier.The print quality is truly exceptional... among the best I've seen in any photo book. The photos themselves are all outstanding. Her framing, compositions, and eye for light are remarkable to me.I am so glad that John Maloof stumbled on Ms. Maier's work and took the time & effort to present it so beautifully. Highly recommend this title for her fans.

I devoured this book, and not in a thoughtless, quick-read sort of way. In a "lost-in-the-photo-for-long-minutes" sort of way. The eye Maier had was, for me, one of the most pristine of any street photographer I've ever had the pleasure of viewing. Of all the photography books I've read (and I'm counting a significant number here), this one is my #1, right behind "50 Portraits" by Gregory Heisler. If you are wavering on buying it, do yourself a favor. If you're at all into street photography, oh my goodness don't delay. Beautiful book, and I'm looking forward to diving into more of Maier's work as soon as possible. She is absolutely an inspiration to get out there and get shooting.

This is a fascinating book full of magnificent photographs taken by a woman who was never known while she was living. Her artistic and emotional talent is evident in every photograph. Her photos, many of them in New York City, evoke an era that we all recognize from movies and books but hers are the reality of a moment in time she captured so eloquently. The story of how her photographs were discovered and the years of dedication of the discoverer in bringing her story and photographs forward to the rest of us is intriguing and moving. It makes one wonder about other undiscovered talent hidden in attics and lost in estate sales.

This is an incredible book, I like how Maloof curated the images of Vivian Maier. However, the printed photographs looks like converted to sepia, contrary to the photos found online and on the documentary produced about Ms. Maier.

I am a professional photographer and even teach a class to older adults. This is an amazing story about a woman who NEVER showed her work to anyone. Vivian Maier's pictures are fabulous and I bet as people are continuing to do research about her that she has studied photography. She is not an amateur as some think. She was very private in her art and in her vision. Her mom's best friend was a portrait photographer and Vivian must have been influenced by this woman. Most photographer love to show their work to others so this is really interesting because of her desire to document her environment but not share what she saw with others until now when her work was discovered by 2 men and scanned and now shown and sold in galleries world wide. Her images go right to the heart of life- they bring you in and you can not help but really enjoy her graphic direct vision of life. Although Vivian was a nanny in NYC and Chicago I do believe she was an artist and a fabulous documentary photographer. If you love great photography you might consider this looking at this work and coming to your own opinions. I am thankful she was discovered.

What can I say? OK, how about this... I love her photography, and her story (watch the documentary - it's very well done)... and the truth is I simply wish she was still alive, or had been alive when here work was "discovered" - she deserved to know the joy she brought to people, and perhaps would have benefitted from receiving our love, or a connection... but maybe it was the lack of those things that made her special - I'm not going to get that deep... get the book - it's beautiful.
