I bought this book as my wife and I are thinking of a similar trip. We rode around the world in the northern hemisphere and are now looking to circumnavigate going south to north, starting in Alaska. I'm quite happy with the purchase. The book is mostly travelogue and part handbook, with route descriptions and a useful section in the back covering bikes, equipment to take and other useful advice. I recommend it for anyone thinking of the trip by motorbike or car. I thought their suggestions were good.I was a bit surprised that the authors, who have technical backgrounds, wrote in such an enjoyable fashion (I'm a techie as well so know the typical writing styles of my peers!). I chuckled at quite of few of their mishaps, remembering our own. Perhaps they shared a bit too much of their feelings, but that could just be the engineer in me speaking...My only criticism, and the reason for dropping a star, were editorial issues. There are dozens of typos and mis-spelled or misplaced words and many of the figures were a bit small and grainy to really complement the writing. The maps could use more detail, which could be solved by using the same size, but having twice as many so the scale is much smaller.A good read and a good reference!
Great travel book about a couple traveling from Canada to the Southern coast of Argentina on motorcycles. They had some experience beforehand, but definitely aren't experts. I'd love to make this trip someday, so reading about relative newbies doing it was interesting.The trip was five months long, and over 25,000 km. As a result the writing has to move quickly, although they do try to expand on the more scenic or interesting parts. They moved a little slower than some travelers, but still seemed rushed. I guess 25,000 is a serious challenge though, and they had to average over 160km a day, and that is without factoring in rest days.Overall it is a good read, especially for people interested in the subject. I had never read a book written by two people (aside from textbooks) and I was surprised by how well it was written, it flowed really well for having two authors
Good reading and fun. But their personal problems got to be a little boring after all. They are good observers of their surroundings and the fact that Jessica speaks Spanish added a lot to the verisimilitude of their adventure. Recommended by all means to novice motorcycle travelers.
No experience but plenty of grit kept these two going. Fun motorcycle trip and good insight into the difficulties of spending so much time on a difficult trip. Could us a little editing, but not too distracting. Happy I read this one.
I highly recommend this book for anyone with an adventurous spirit. I've always admired those who venture on epic journeys and "The Great Pan-American Motorcycle Expedition" is clearly in this category. This book includes the hard physical challenges and the very close calls. But better still are the diverse cultures - both present and historic - and the fascinating people Jesse and Jessica encountered.If you plan to make the same trip by motorcycle or other vehicle, this book is essential reading. But for those like me, who are unlikely to follow in the authors' footsteps, this book will give you the full experience. I learned a lot through this book.
I did not read this book for the Motorcycle "how to" but rather to follow the relationship of a newly wed couple embarking on a dangerous, yet exciting journey. They let their readers in on the raw truth of discovering themselves as a married couple but also their individual limitations. As a non rider, I found the falls and near close encounters to be slightly anxious, but relished in their beautiful descriptions of the places they saw. I often felt like I was there with them, eating the local treats, trying slimy beverages and getting to know their fellow adventure riders. Although this book is intended for fellow adventurers it could also appeal to those romantics out there.
This book is a great read. Two o ice riders tell a story that inspires beginners or low experience riders to take a. Janice and go. Their honesty about their personal ups and downs is refreshing. It cover the narrative as well as maps and a “technical†review after each section to help inform others who might want to take the same trip. Well done!
This book is an amazing combination of history, geography, cultural anthropology and motorcycle wisdom all told through the experiences of two absolute rookie adventure bikers. As newlyweds, they find their marriage tested in the fires of survival challenges, and what could have broken them apart ultimately becomes a powerful bonding experience. If you have any interest at all in Latin america, this book will take you there. I highly recommend it.
