I had the privilege of reading an ARC of the second book in the Trillium Bay series. Tracy Brogan takes us back to Wenniway Island and the Callahan family. This is Brooke’s story. As the oldest of three, Brooke has always felt responsible for her sisters and the family since her mother died when she was fourteen. Brooke is taking over as mayor of Wenniway Island at the end of the Blackwell dynasty of mayors after being one of three teachers on the island for 12 years . As she faces the challenges of bringing the island’s government into the 21st century, she also is dealing with the rumor of a jewel thief being on the island. Enter Leo Walker, ex-military/personal security/budding author. He shakes up her world in a way that she had given up on.Tracy Brogan uses her cast of quirky characters to tell a great story that is hard to put down. The characters are easy to relate to and root for. My Kind of Forever works as a stand alone novel, but for those who want more should read the first book in the series, My Kind of You.

"And one thing is for sure," she added with a chuckle, "he seems like the kind of guy who could make you forget all about any s***y old boyfriends." Well, that described Leo perfectly.Brooke Callaghan, new mayor of Trillium Bay, was considering a fling. Leo Walker is new in town, and surely only for a short while. But Brooke is thinking it's time to throw caution to the wind and enjoy the time she has with Leo, no matter how little time that may be.Of course, not everything is as it seems with the hot new bartender. Just as Brooke is ready to throw her whole heart into this "fling", things get turned completely upside down. After learning the truth about Leo's real reasons to be in Trillium Bay, can Brooke trust Leo again? This was a wonderful story. I love the small town and the residents. I can't wait to hear more about Trillium Bay!

Was extremely irritated and could not get through the book. Why would you switch writing styles in a series? The first book in this series was 3rd person and now this book which I was so excited to read was in 1st. I don't enjoy reading 1st person. I struggled to read this because I waited so long for it come out. I couldn't finish it though. And won't be reading this author again.

Tracy Brogan is one of my very favorite authors. I read her books for the polished, sophisticated writing, her lovable characters, and the touch of humor that colors most every scene. My Kind of Forever does not disappoint. From the moment I began reading I was already experiencing that most dreaded of dilemmas: wanting to get to the happily-ever-after and not ever wanting the story to end. Five stars all the way.

I thought this was a cute story and very witty. I read the first Trillium Bay book and enjoyed all the quirky characters. So this was like going home. Only thing I wasn't crazy about was our main character using the F word so much.

This is the fifth Tracy Brogan novel I've read. None of the previous novels had a mystery element, so I was surprised to find a compelling mystery embedded within this story line. Excellent mystery and a wonderful romance for the oldest Callahan sister, the new mayor Brooke. Can't wait for the next Trillium Bay novel!

When Brooke was first introduced in My Kind of You, I didn't really know how to take her. She seemed a little stuffy and really uptight. But reading her story really explained her and it was nice to watch her bloom into her life. This book was so much fun to read. Filled with characters written so well that they seem real, this book did not disappoint! Ms. Brogan writes romantic comedies that are bound to make you laugh out loud. I adore this series so much.

I enjoyed this 2nd entry in the Trillium Bay series. Honestly, I thought book one was a real snoozer, lacking the charm and humor of Brogan's previous Bell Harbor series, and wasn't sure I wanted to bother reading this one. But, this story was cute, and the romance between the older sister and a new-to-town bartender unfolded nicely. There is even a bit of a mystery in this one. I would definitely read a 3rd entry, either about the youngest sister or even a continuation of Brooke & Leo's story.

Review

An NPR Best Book of 2014A Globe & Mail Best Book of 2014A Brain Pickings Best Science Book of 2014A Bloomberg Best Book of 2014One of Hudson Booksellers' 5 Best Business Books of 2014Goodreads Semifinalist for Best Nonfiction Book of the YearFinalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize"Most data-hyping books are vapor and slogans. This one has the real stuff: actual data and actual analysis taking place on the page. That’s something to be praised, loudly and at length. Praiseworthy, too, is Rudder’s writing, which is consistently zingy and mercifully free of Silicon Valley business gabble."—Jordan Ellenberg, Washington Post"As a researcher, Mr. Rudder clearly possesses the statistical acumen to answer the questions he has posed so well. As a writer, he keeps the book moving while fully exploring each topic, revealing his graphs and charts with both explanatory and narrative skill. Though he forgoes statistical particulars like p-values and confidence intervals, he gives an approachable, persuasive account of his data sources and results. He offers explanations of what the data can and cannot tell us, why it is sufficient or insufficient to answer some question we may have and, if the latter is the case, what sufficient data would look like. He shows you, in short, how to think about data."—Wall Street Journal"Rudder is the co-founder of the dating site OKCupid and the data scientist behind its now-legendary trend analyses, but he is also — as it becomes immediately clear from his elegant writing and wildly cross-disciplinary references — a lover of literature, philosophy, anthropology, and all the other humanities that make us human and that, importantly in this case, enhance and ennoble the hard data with dimensional insight into the richness of the human experience...an extraordinarily unusual and dimensional lens on what Carl Sagan memorably called ‘the aggregate of our joy and suffering.’"—Maria Popova, Brain Pickings"Fascinating, funny, and occasionally howl-inducing...[Rudder] is a quant with soul, and we’re lucky to have him."—Elle "There's another side of Big Data you haven't seen—not the one that promised to use our digital world to our advantage to optimize, monetize, or systematize every last part our lives. It's the big data that rears its ugly head and tells us what we don't want to know. And that, as Christian Rudder demonstrates in his new book, Dataclysm, is perhaps an equally worthwhile pursuit. Before we heighten the human experience, we should understand it first."—TIME"At a time when consumers are increasingly wary of online tracking, Rudder makes a powerful argument in Dataclysm that the ability to tell so much about us from the trails we leave is as potentially useful as it is pernicious, and as educational as it may be unsettling. By explaining some of the insights he has gleaned from OkCupid and other social networks, he demystifies data-mining and sheds light on what, for better or for worse, it is now capable of."—Financial Times"Dataclysm is a well-written and funny look at what the numbers reveal about human behavior in the age of social media. It’s both profound and a bit disturbing, because, sad to say, we’re generally not the kind of people we like to think — or say — we are."—Salon"For all its data and its seemingly dating-specific focus, Dataclysm tells the story set forth by the book's subtitle, in an entertaining and accessible way. Informative, eye-opening, and (gasp) fun to read. Even if you’re not a giant stat head."—Grantland"[Rudder] doesn’t wring or clap his hands over the big-data phenomenon (see N.S.A., Google ads, that sneaky Fitbit) so much as plunge them into big data and attempt to pull strange creatures from the murky depths." —The New Yorker"A hopeful and exciting journey into the heart of data collection...[Rudder's] book delivers both insider access and a savvy critique of the very machinery he is employed by. Since he's been in the data mines and has risen above them, Rudder becomes a singular and trustworthy guide.—The Globe and Mail"Compulsively readable — including for those with no particular affinity for numbers in and of themselves — and surprisingly personal. Starting with aggregates, Rudder posits, we can zoom in on the details of how we live, love, fight, work, play, and age; from numbers, we can derive narrative. There are few characters in the book, and few anecdotes — but the human story resounds throughout."—Refinery29"Rudder’s lively, clear prose…makes heady concepts understandable and transforms the book’s many charts into revealing truths…Rudder teaches us a bit about how wonderfully peculiar humans are, and how we go about hiding it."—Flavorwire"Dataclysm is all about what we can learn about human minds and hearts by analyzing the massive ongoing experiment that is the internet."—Forbes"The book reads as if it's written (well) by a curious child whose parents beg him or her to stop asking "what-if" questions. Rudder examines the data of the website he helped create with unwavering curiosity. Every turn presents new questions to be answered, and he happily heads down the rabbit hole to resolve them."—U.S. News"A wonderful march through infographics created using data derived from the web…a fun, visual book—and a necessary one at that."—The Independent (UK), 2014's Best Books on the Internet and Technology"This is the best book that I've read on data in years, perhaps ever. If you want to understand how data is affecting the present and what it portends for the future, buy it now."—Huffington Post"Rudder draws from big data sets – Google searches, Twitter updates, illicitly obtained Facebook data passed shiftily between researchers like bags of weed – to draw out subtle patterns in politics, sexuality, identity and behaviour that are only revealed with distance and aggregation…Dataclysm will entertain those who want to know how machines see us. It also serves as a call to action, showing us how server farms running everything from home shopping to homeland security turn us into easily digested data products. Rudder's message is clear: in this particular sausage factory, we are the pigs.” —New Scientist"Dataclysm offers both the satisfaction of confirming stereotypes and the fun of defying them…Such candor is disarming, as is Mr. Rudder’s puckish sense of humor." –Pittsburgh Post-Gazette"Studying human behavior is a little like exploring a jungle: it's messy, hard, and easy to lose your way. But Christian Rudder is a consummate guide, revealing essential truths about who we are. Big Data has never been so fun."—Dan Ariely, author of Predictably Irrational "Dataclysm is a book full of juicy secrets—secrets about who we love, what we crave, why we like, and how we change each other’s minds and lives, often without even knowing it. Christian Rudder makes this mathematical narrative of our culture fun to read and even more fun to discuss: You will find yourself sharing these intriguing data-driven revelations with everyone you know."—Jane McGonigal, author of Reality Is Broken "In the first few pages of Dataclysm, Christian Rudder uses massive amounts of actual behavioral data to prove what I always believed in my heart: Belle and Sebastian is the whitest band ever. It only gets better from there."—Aziz Ansari"It’s unheard of for a book about Big Data to read like a guilty pleasure, but Dataclysm does. It’s a fascinating, almost voyeuristic look at who we really are and what we really want."—Steven Strogatz, Schurman Professor of Applied Mathematics, Cornell University, author of The Joy of x"Smart, revealing, and sometimes sobering, Dataclysm affirms what we probably suspected in our darker moments: When it comes to romance, what we say we want isn't what will actually make us happy. Christian Rudder has tapped the tremendous wealth of data that the Internet offers to tease out thoughts on topics like beauty and race that most of us wouldn’t cop to publicly. It's a riveting read, and Rudder is an affable and humane guide."—Adelle Waldman, author of The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P."Christian Rudder has written a funny and profound book about important issues. Race, love, sex—you name it. Are we the sum of the data we produce? Read this book immediately and see if you can answer the question."—Errol Morris"Big Data can be like a 3D movie without 3D glasses—you know there's a lot going on but you're mainly just disoriented. We should feel fortunate to have an interpreter as skilled (and funny) as Christian Rudder. Dataclysm is filled with insights that boil down Big Data into byte-sized revelations."—Michael Norton, Harvard Business School, coauthor of Happy Money"With a zest for both the profound and the wacky, Rudder demonstrates how the information we provide individually tells a vast deal about who we are collectively. A visually engaging read and a fascinating topic make this a great choice not just for followers of Nate Silver and fans of infographics, but for just about anyone who, by participating in online activity, has contributed to the data set."—Library Journal"Demographers, entrepreneurs, students of history and sociology, and ordinary citizens alike will find plenty of provocations and, yes, much data in Rudder's well-argued, revealing pages."—Kirkus ReviewsFrom the Hardcover edition.

Making my way through some interesting observations generated by "OK Cupid" and other "big data" sites, I hit a section marked "Coda" where he went on to comment on the process used to generate the data illustrations, followed by notes, acknowledgements, and an index. Thought I was halfway through the book but had actually finished. Note sure whether the lack of mathematical analysis is a blessing or not - I guess that would depend on how capable the writer is - but much of the content, while interesting is a "firm grasp of the obvious."

Occasionally, the strength of a book lies in its referencing, index, and accompanying notes. This book has that strength... The book is a popularization of how Big Data is used and can be used. While the text is written in a casual and 'breezy style ' -- the major weakness is not accounting for Big Data misuses. As can be presently evidenced in how a small and powerful minority can steer and rule a mob of individuals. The strengths of this book lie in its referencing and notation. This accounts for more than a third of the book. It is written in a narrative, breezy style that makes it readable, as well.Although I believe Nate Silver's book on the subject is far better, this book does serve a purpose. I believe this book can be best used as a tool for over-ruling the bad practices of despots and dictators. This book may serve as a reminder to how people misuse knowledge and power to their own favor.

This is a well-written book best suited to two groups of people: those interested in data but not much familiarity with analysis beyond the concept of averages and those interested in the ideas and issues that Rudder lightly touches on (gender, race, sexual orientation). Beyond that, though, this book doesn't have a lot to offer besides brief distractions. He intends it to be "a popularization of data and data science," which apparently means publishing a lot of "hey, this might be interesting" graphs to generate an audience. It's a shame, because there is a lot of quality content here that with more effort and ambition could have been shaped into an inspiring example of what data can do to stimulate thought and action; instead we get mostly just entertainment (well done, but entertainment nonetheless). Not exactly what the world needs from people with Rudder's skills.

Big data has a bad name. It is used to spy on us and to convince us to buy things we do not need (and, we discover after parting with our money, that we often do not want). Nevertheless, big data - and the insight it gives into who we are - fascinates us.Christian Rudder is in a unique position to tell us a lot about ourselves. As a co-founder of OkCupid, he has access to the hearts and minds (and politics and food and drink) of millions of us. In Dataclysm, he slices, dices, and adds a bit of direction (and wit) to data that, he believes, reveals the inner soul of who we are. Here is a smattering of what you'll uncover in Dataclysm.Women (who men believe are `over-the-hill' after age 21) think that only one in six men is `above average' in attractiveness. Until age 30, women prefer slightly older guys. After 30, they prefer them slightly younger. At 40, well let's say that men lose their appeal after they turn 40. Conclusion? Women want men to age with them (at least until age 40). Men always want youth.People who are considered attractive by everyone are less appealing that those who are seen as unattractive by some. That is, having some flaw or imperfection actually makes you more attractive and appealing to others.Twitter may actually improve a user's writing because it forces you to wring meaning from fewer letters. The messages on OkCupid that get the most responses are short (40-60 characters). To get to that brief message, most people edit, edit and edit some more. Then that same message is used over and over and over again. Rudder's conclusion? Boilerplate is 75% as effective as something original.Remember the six degrees of separation? Rudder reports that analysis of Facebook accounts shows that 99.6% of people on Facebook are, in fact, within six degrees of anyone on the planet. The more you share with mutual friends, the stronger the relationship. Couples who have a strong relationship tend to be the connecting point among very different groups of people - your partner is one of the few people you can introduce into the far corners of your life.People tend to overemphasize the big, splashy things: faith, politics, and certainly looks, but in determining compatibility with another, those beliefs do not matter nearly as much as everyone thinks. Sometimes they do not matter at all. Often it is caring about a topic that is more important than how you view the topic itself.Race has less effect on how well you will get along with someone else than religion, politics or education. However, racism is still pervasive in whom you might prefer to interact with.On Facebook, every percentile of attractiveness gives a man two new friends. It gives a woman three. Guess how that plays into employment interviews?White people tend to differentiate themselves by their hair and eyes. Asians by their country of origin. Latinos by their music. You get the idea - many strange but interesting relationships begin to pop out when you have mounds of data about many people who give up that data without the expectation that it is going to be used to figure out who we really are when no one is looking over our shoulder.Rudder provides a stimulating glimpse into what can be teased out of piles of data. I have to assume he knows how to analyze the data and how to interpret what the data says to him. What he sees is sometimes distressing (as in his conclusions about racism). However, it is always fascinating. As dating sites, Google, social media sites, (the NSA?) and others continue to vacuum up data on our personal lives, will the result be good? Or will it be used to hurt? Who will decide? Does it require laws? Or will people eventually turn away from companies that misuse the information we give them about ourselves?A good read. Look for more tidbits as social scientists dig deeper and deeper into big data. This and other reviews available at WalterBristow.comReview based on a copy courtesy of the publisher.

The data in the early chapters and the analysis are really interesting, and reveal a lot about human nature. As I read it, I thought this book is so much better than other popular big data books. Then, I got to the rambling second half of the book, which uses other data sets and covers territory already covered by other books. There seems to be no coherent theme, plus a ton of padding. I felt strongly that the author ran out of material, and was just trying to stretch the book.First half: 4-5, Second half 1-2.

As a dating coach, I needed to research online dating and what it involves for my clients, and this was packed with excellent information. One thing I noted, however, was they do derive conclusions that aren't necessarily true. I also don't like the labels they put on people (e.g. "prudes") just because they choose a certain lifestyle. It's sad to think they claim not to be judgmental, but judgments about their users slip out a lot.All the same, there were some phenomenal observations and I gleaned a lot to help people optimize their experiences online, especially in having hope, regardless of the demographic they fit into. Very useful.

not my best choice , uses old data

perfect... exactly what I wanted.

All three could have been compiled into one book. Most of the ideas are somewhat obvious. It is a rip off of sorts.

All three could have been compiled into one book. Most of the ideas are somewhat obvious. It is a rip off of sorts.

Very little information and not what I anticipated. It was definitely not worth what I paid. It is more of a $5.00 book.

Repackaging of an old military FM. Good if you don't know where to look. Not so good if you already have the info.

This book, the first edition, is very simple. That is probabley it's best feature. The second is it's drawings. Negative points come from thin content, vague content and limited application value. It describes the use of explosives, fuses and primers... but no formula(s). Its an elementary idea book at the most. If many of the other books presented the information in the professional format this book is in... it would be a miracle manual of sorts. Silencer description...OK. Pipe Grenade... bad. Shot Gun Grenade Launcher... semi valuable. Claymore Mine... not a good idea. Rocket launcher... incomplete and no actual how to instructions. Plastic Explosive... Mix two ingredients, wow. Blasting caps... good for beginers. Thats it. If the other three are like this, I don't think Ill take the time to read them. All 4 minutes.

Pros:- very simple format- easily readable- provides a "big picture"- real material & barometers- valuable adviceCons:- some (important) doctrines missing- needs to be updated (Civ Pro has no MBE Qs)- UBE only. You still need something for state specific stuffThe book's meant to give you a general overview of the exam, portions. It's brief and can be read through quickly. It also has a model study schedule, tips on how to keep your sanity, and an advisory section for retakers. Some people may've skipped family law, secured, etc. Some didn't even go to an American law school (e.g. many NY takers). Read this book and you'll at least know the basics for every UBE subject.Where it's really good is that it has real MEEs, MBEs & MPTs, with scoresheets to compare and contrast. The most frustrating thing about writing practice essays, is not knowing what the examiners are really looking for (or the basis for your practice essay grades). Reading NCBE model answers aren't helpful because you can't write/type them in 30 mins. The scoresheets solve that and give you a framework how to write your essay - with the relevant issues you should talk about.Because of the above, it can be "too brief" for some. It can also seem a bit too "dumbed down." DO NOT use this book as a primary resource. It doesn't go into depth (the various rules regarding fixtures, etc.). If you already have prep course material (BarBri, Kaplan, Themis, etc.), it's still a good supplement for the scoresheets alone. The book's meant to help you pass - nothing more. You don't need 100% knowledge to pass. Bar prep companies basically scare you to make you prepare (fear is a great motivator) and then deluge you with info. This book does the reverse - telling you that you can pass, and how to do it - making for a great balance.

It is a textbook... It is a textbook to help prepare for the bar... if you make it through the entire book without a mental breakdown then it is worth it. Good luck!

Prof. Wanda Temm breaks it down for you like you wish other test prep programs would. Remember that four hour lecture on secured transactions? Yeah, that's what I thought... This book tells you exactly how to tackle the topic and garner the points needed to ace that MEE subject. I found this book most helpful as a supplement to my bar prep program, especially on the MEE topics not covered on the MBE.

This book is written as if talking to a third grader rather than a law student. It's simplistic and doesn't really add to your knowledge. I stopped reading after the first couple chapters.

Great prep for bar prep. Loved the mind maps and helpful MCQs and essays.

good class bar text

This book was a huge disappointment. It lacked alot of important legal doctrines necessary to pass the bar exam. The so-called mind maps were shallow, inadequate, and incomplete. This was a big waste of money.

A bit long but helpful. Good tips for passing the bar.

Larry Osborne is a pastor’s pastor and a leader’s leader. He has successfully made and multiplied disciples in the same local church for over thirty years. Whenever he writes a book I read it; re-read it; and make sure my staff and leaders read it as well. Larry started with a small struggling church and has successfully developed multiplying disciples of Christ in San Diego and all over the world through their simple church model of assimilation and discipleship through their intentional and strategic implementation of small groups. In Sticky Church Osborne writes about a simple strategic process for developing a small group ministry that is extremely effective in assimilating attenders and new comers in the church and helping them become connected and committed to making and multiplying fully devoted followers of Christ for the long-haul.Part 1 is composed of four chapters whereby Osborne makes a compelling case for a simple model and strategy in developing a “sticky church.” A sticky church is a church where people “stick” or stay because they immediately become convinced and unified around the vision; and live out this vision in the context of a small group. In Osborne’s church in Vista, California (a suburb of San Diego) 80% of church attenders (over 7,000 adults) become committed to their small groups - what they call “growth groups.” The whole idea of “stickiness” is keeping people in the church (what he calls “closing the back door”) so that you have a high retention of attenders who stay and grow because they commit to a small group that’s committed to their growth as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Here are some insightful quotes from the first four chapters:“But we’ve often become so focused on reaching people that we’ve forgotten the importance of keeping people.”“What does Jesus’ parable about the four soils have to say about the way we do church? To my thinking it says a lot. And one of the most important things it says about churches is that stickiness matters.”“They [the principles in this book and the sermon-based model used by North Coast Church) worked just as well when we were a small church of less than two hundred adults as they do today in a multisite megachurch with more than seven thousand in weekend attendance.”“Almost all our growth has come by word of mouth.”“We’ve simply tried to serve our people so well that they’ll want to bring their friends, without needing to be asked to do so.”“Everything we do is aimed at helping the Christians we already have grow stronger in Christ. But everything is done in such a way that their non-Christian friends will understand all that we’re saying and doing.”“Bottom line: We’ve tried to create a perfect storm for come-and-see evangelism while velcroing newcomers for long-term spiritual growth.”“In fact, the most important number to know about North Coast Church is not the weekend attendance. It’s the percentage of adults who participate in one of our small groups. Since 1985 that number has equaled 80 percent of our average weekend attendance.”“It’s as though they assumed (people that think that sermon-based small groups only work in a megachurch) that North Coast was always big church—or at least became one overnight…Not so…North Coast grew quite slowly in the early days. It took five years to go from 130-180. It took another five years to reach 750.”“This is not an anti-marketing or anti-programs book. It’s a pro-stickiness book.”“What matters is not the size of the church or the slickness of the programming . What matters is that those who come find a ministry and relationships worthy of spontaneous word-of-mouth recommendations. When that happens, a church is primed to hold on to the people it already has and the people they bring with them.”“A sticky church needs a healthy leadership team composed of people who genuinely like one another, share the same vision, and pull in the same direction (talking about the first big change necessary to developing a sticky church - retaining new comers).”“The second big change was in the way I taught and led our congregation. Focusing on the front door aimed everything at two kinds of people: the not-yet Christian or the super saint who was ready to help me charge the hill. There wasn't much room for people who came to Christ but didn’t grow at a fast enough pace or carried lots of old baggage.”“The third change involved launching a small group ministry focus primarily on building significant relationships rather than growing the church.”“Instead of celebrating how many people came, the most important measurement would be how many came back.”“Churches that close the back door effectively do so by serving their congregations so well that the people don’t want to leave. And happy sheep are incurable word-of-mouth marketers.”“Whatever you do to reach people you have to continue to do to keep them (this is why they keep their ministries simple, consistent, and excellent - North Coast doesn’t do a lot of special events or programming).”“High-powered front-door programs can have the unintended consequences of sending a message that some weekends and programs are for brining guests—and the rest aren’t.”“There’s a second unintended obstacle that highly programmed front-door churches can put in the way of natural evangelism. If most of the people who come to Christ come as a result of a complex and high-powered event, it sends a subtle message that it takes lots of time, planning, and money to lead someone to Christ.”“Instead of complex assimilation programs, a sticky church simply needs to provide plenty of ministry on-ramps to which members can easily connect the friends they’ve invited.”In Part 2 Osborne writes five chapters on “How Small Groups Change Everything.” Here are some important points from this section:“Most spiritual growth doesn’t come as a result of a training program or set curriculum. It comes as a result of life putting us in what I like to call a need-to-know or need-to-grow situation.”“The focus of a sermon based small group is not so much on the curriculum as it is on the process.”“The ultimate goal of a sermon-based small group is simply to velcro people to the two things they will need most when faced with a need-to-know or need-to-grow situation: the Bible and other Christians.”“When the New Testament was written, the typical church was so small that it was, in essence, a small group.”“The best tool I’ve ever seen for connecting people to one another and engaging them with the Bible for the long haul is a sermon-based small group. It offers a format that fits the way we spiritually grow, while providing a framework for a healthy and sticky church. Nothing compares.“While many church leaders claim that small groups are an integral part of their ministry, I’ve learned that two simple measurements will always tell me their real place in a ministry’s pecking order: (1) the percentage of adults who attend a small group, and (2) the participation level of senior staff and key lay leaders.”“Getting there (the key to reaching critical mass - that all-important stage at which the full power and benefits of a small group ministry begin to impact the ethos, DNA, and spiritual health of nearly everyone and everything in the church) usually requires that somewhere between 40 to 60 percent of the average weekend adult attendance be involved in a small group. If fewer people participate, small groups will still have a profound effect, but it will be primarily on the individuals in them, not on the entire church.”“Small groups undercut this Holy Man myth (The Holy Man myth is the idea that pastors/clergy somehow have more of a direct hot line to God) because they typically meet in widely dispersed settings. This makes it impossible for the pastor (or any other staff member) to carry out all the pastoral roles and functions. They simply can’t be everywhere at once…As a result, small group leaders inevitably step up and assume roles of spiritual leadership that they would have otherwise deferred to the pastoral staff.”“That not only changes the way small group leaders view themselves; it changes the congregation’s outlook as well. Once people begin to realize that God’s anointing and spiritual power aren’t restricted to the guy who speaks on Sunday, they whine a lot less when he’s not available.”“Another spiritually crippling falsehood that began to lose its grip on our congregation was what I call the Holy Place myth. It’s the idea that God’s presence is somehow greater in some places than in others.”“With the demise of both the Holy Man and the Holy Place myths, our ministry was, for the first time, genuinely unleashed. People started bringing God to the workplace and into their neighborhoods rather than trying to bring everyone to the church building.”“Let’s face it: In most churches there aren’t many opportunities for high-impact, life on life ministry. There are usually few up-front teaching roles, a handful of worship leader positions, and some youth and Sunday school spots to be filled. After that, most roles are pretty much part of the supporting cast, designed more to keep the machine running than to touch lives.”“Small groups open up lots of new opportunities for frontline ministry. At North Coast every group has a leader and a host, most often made up of two couples. That means in every group, we have four people who teach, counsel, disciple, pray, visit hospitals, lead in worship, provide communion, and even baptize members of their little flock—none of which they would do without the platform for ministry we call growth groups.”“As a former youth pastor, I learned long ago that no one steps up until there’s a vacuum that needs to be filled. Every year when my seniors were about to graduate, I would wonder if we’d survive without their leadership. But as soon as they were gone, the juniors and sophomores stepped up—often doing a better job than their departing upperclassmen.”“Still another powerful advantage that small groups can bring is a marked increase in the practice of spiritual disciplines. That’s because a small group takes our good intentions and puts them on the our calendar.”“Here’s the irony: if we canceled our small groups and filled our facility once a week for a prayer meeting with standing-room-only crowds, we’d probably get some great write-ups in the Christian press. But in reality we’d have almost 70% fewer people praying than we already have in our small groups.”“Our young adult dropout rate is a fraction of what I’ve seen in the past. And I’m convinced it’s because we’ve focused on giving our children and youth the powerful gift of a growing mom and dad.”“Sermon-based small groups also made it much easier for our teaching team to keep the entire church focused and headed in the same direction. Whether we’re casting vision, clarifying direction, or simply dealing with an important issue, it’s much easier to get people on the same page and keep them there.”“One reason I want my messages to be more memorable (on why sermon based small groups make the preacher a better preacher and make the sermon go further in people’s lives) is that I want people to apply the important truths and doctrines of the faith. I know that if I can change the way people think, it will change the way they live.”“It’s a relatively short step (for a marginal attender) from listening to a sermon to joining a small group that discusses the sermon he’s already heard. But it’s a much bigger step into a traditional small group Bible study.”“There’s still another advantage that comes with a sermon based small group model. It’s that most people (including the marginally interested and new Christians) come to the meeting far more prepared than they would if they were using a typical workbook or study guide.”Part 3 recounts ten chapters on the Why’s and How’s of Sermon-Based Small Groups and why this model works better than some of the more popular models out there for small groups. Here are some practical realities of sermon based small groups:“A group needs to be small enough that everyone has a chance to contribute, but large enough that no one feels forced to speak up or share more than they want to. That means the ideal size for a group of introverts will tend to be larger than the ideal size for a group of thin-it-and-immediately-say-it extroverts. One needs more people to break the silence. The other needs less people so that there will be some silence.”“The ideal size for a group of married couples is usually twelve to fourteen people. For singles, eight to twelve can be ideal.”“We’ve found that whenever a couples group reaches sixteen people (or a singles group reaches fourteen), attendance becomes predictably inconsistent. It’s strange, but we can have three groups of twelve people, and all thirty-six will be present at almost every meeting. But two groups of sixteen people will hardly ever have all thirty-two show up. Perhaps it has to do with those in the smaller group feeling more needed and feeling a greater sense of responsibility.”“We’ve found that the sermon-based small groups that have the greater life-on-life impact and stay together the longest are always those in which the friendships are deepest. That’s why we tell people to choose a group primarily according to who else is in it rather than where or when it meets.”“Although we allow people to pick any group they want as long as there’s room in the group, we’ve found that those who make their choice based on a convenient location or time have a much lower stick rate than those who look for a group with which they already share an interest or station in life.”“In almost every case, the first thing you’d notice at one of our small group meetings is that it starts with some light refreshments as people arrive—especially something to drink.”“Once the meeting starts, most groups spend fifteen to thirty minutes sharing prayer requests and updating one another on what has been going on in their lives…As a group jells, this part of the meeting tends to expand and move to a much deeper level. In new groups, it can be perfunctory and shallow at first. But that’s fine by us. We don’t try to force depth. We simply provide an opportunity for great depth and vulnerability t show up when both the group and the Holy Spirit are ready.”“The next part of the meeting is dedicated to the study and discussion of the previous weekend’s sermon…To improve the quality of the discussion, we work hard to make sure that everyone comes with the answers to the study questions already filled out. One of the most effective ways we do this is by having our leaders periodically ask people to read what they’ve written down, especially if it appears that someone is deviating from their original answer.”“The homework (discussion/study guide) always consists of three types of questions: Getting to Know Me (These questions offer a nonthreatening look into our past or current life situations. They’re designed to help us get to know each other at a safe but accelerated pace), Into the Bible (These questions take the group to biblical passages that are either complementary or parallel to the main text of the sermon but were not covered in the message), and Application (These are designed to take home the main point or points of the sermon and drive them home. They typically deal with attitudes or life-change issues).”“We ask every group to take at least one service project a year (the ideal is two) and to have at least one social gathering per quarter).”“As a rule of thumb, most people will participate in only two time slots per week. No matter what the third meeting is for or when it takes place, it’s hard to get anyone to show up.”Osborne goes on to discuss how to overcome the time crunch of developing and sustaining leaders; determining your primary purpose; how groups can grow deeper; why dividing groups isn’t the best strategy; how to find and develop leaders; how to train leaders; and these five key questions to ask before starting small groups:“Who are you trying to reach?” By that I mean, “Specifically who do you imagine being in your small groups? Who is likely to opt out? Who are you willing to leave out?”“What you plan to do in your meetings?” The options are endless. But once I know what happens in a small group, I can predict with uncanny accuracy who will come and who won’t.“How well does who you want to reach match up with what you plan to do?”“How do you think people are best trained to live out the Christian life and best prepared for leadership?”The final question to ask before launching a new or revamped small group ministry is, “Who already does what we want to do well—and does it in a church we would go to if we lived in the area?”There is a large appendix section in the back of the book containing helps for the following topics: (1) Writing Great Questions; (2) Sample Sermon Note Sheet and Study Questions; (3) Sample Growth Group Covenant; (4) End-of-the-quarter Evaluation Form; (5) Leader Training Topics; (6) Leader Responsibilities; (7) Host Responsibilities; (8) A List of NT “One Anothers.” The Last section contains a Study Guide of Follow Up Questions for each chapter in the book.Osborne’s model is simple; practical, proven, and effective. I don’t know of a better model for helping a local church reach out; equip; serve; raise up leaders; and unleash people for multiplying disciples of Jesus Christ. I have used this model in three churches; and now about to embark on launching this model in another church. I am grateful for it’s simplicity and yet the profound impact it has made practically in so many lives that I have been in community with. It has made a profound impact on my own belief that discipleship is done best in community and is a process not an event.

I love this book. I just wish it had more examples of sermon-based questions to stir up my creativity when preparing the sermon notes. In the book, he says this is such an important part of a successful sermon based group, but would love more examples. Currently, I go to their church's website to find their current homework to get ideas. We recently just launched our first small groups using this model and it will take a little time to get the culture to shift, which is ok. Overall I thought it made sense and love how everything is laid out in a very easy to follow format. Thanks for the book!

This is just solid wisdom and experience sharing the best from a great church. It’d be difficult to take this material and use it as a magic pill the way many how to ministry books lead us to. It helps give perspective and insight as well as a grid to see what might and what might not work in your context. You will find at least something that’s helpful.

So many churches have issues with members sticking with them. The back door needs to be closed. The ideas in this book offer practical help in how this can be done. It is an easy read. The lessons are drawn from the experiences of Osborne and his North Coast Church. I wonder how it works in a different setting, community and church culture. The preparation of the questions and resources for the small groups seems a daunting task. More help there would be a good revision for this book.

One of the BEST books on church. We have it wrong...the way we do church and Pastor Larry graciously shares how to make it work. Using Scripture and following the example of the 1st Century church, he shares what works and why. HIGHLY recommended. (Check our NorthCoast Church)

I just finished a book summary on Sticky Church by Larry Osborne. As the pastor of a mega-church in San Diego, one of the quickest growing regions in California, some of his assumptions may be driven by his fortuitous location. Most churches would be quite satisfied to experience the sort of explosive growth he had prior to the implementation of Sticky Church principals. The fact that it tripled or quadrupled in size over the next twenty years is partly due to his methodology and partly due to what was going on and his fortunate realization that the Cho empty chair model was not going to be successful in America the way it was in Korea or in other authoritarian type cultures. The Lecture/Lab model for sermon-based small groups is not revolutionary, but it's simplicity is. Because everything his ministry does is focused on the impact to the small group, the sticky factor is always the focus of his outcome based strategy. I bought this book to write the summary knowing that I had already been working this model in my own church with a tremendous effect. I am on year 3 of the lecture/lab model and it works, it's that simple. I would recommend this to anyone who is starting a small group or is ready to revamp their existing strategy. The reasons Osborne gives are sound and natural, with the exception of the assimilation theory he uses. I cannot get behind him on that. He really should write a different book on assimilation if he is going to reccommend it without supporting his conclusions. Great book though.

Good thought provoking things to consider for any church. Helping church leaders to consider how to close the backdoor and help those who come stick around is something that we all need to look at. It's easy to focus on the front door and I think that is what we have done and what a lot of church "programs" do. But our goal is to help people make it to Heaven, not just usher them in and move to the next people to usher in.This book was also an easy read. It's more about the experiences of the author and his church has gone through. So don't expect Scriptural studies on how Jesus ran his ministry. Aside from that, I think it is a good read and helps church leaders to evaluate small groups.

Amazon.com Review

After being introduced for a lecture, Ram Dass eschewed the stairs and, from his front row seat, leapt up on to the stage--or tried to, anyway, but age and gravity brought him crashing back to earth. Like other baby boomers, Ram Dass has learned the hard way that aging is unkind to the body. But he has also learned that it can be an opportunity for growth. While others begin to devalue you, you can reconnect with the spiritual, grow into wisdom, and create value for yourself. In Still Here, Ram Dass offers a philosophy for aging that teaches us how to diminish our suffering despite the aches, pains, and limitations of age. This becomes possible when we step away from the ego-self and into the soul-self, where we can witness our thoughts and emotions and evaluate their effects on us. If aging has brought challenges to Ram Dass, it has also brought him wisdom, which, through his personal anecdotes and stories of others in the struggle against aging, he shares with great generosity. --Brian Bruya

From Publishers Weekly

In 1971, Ram Dass became an icon for a generation of spiritual seekers with the publication of Be here Now, a hip, heartfelt chronicle of a search for truth that began when he got kicked out of Harvard along with Timothy Leary for tripping on psilocybin mushrooms and launching a psychedelic movement. The author, who was born Richard Alpert, discovered the magic of reality itself in India, when he met his guru, Maharaji, who gave him a name that means "Servant of God." In the decades since, Ram Dass has produced a stream of books about how heart-and mind-expanding service can be. His writing (and his globe-trotting lectures) were suffused with the ebullient humor and insight of a born storyteller. Then, one evening in 1997, as he lay in bed wondering how to finish this work on the wisdom potential of aging, Ram Dass was hit with a massive stroke that left him wheelchair-bound, partially paralyzed, requiring round-the-clock care. This book was revised and edited by Ram Dass as he struggled to say what he wanted to say without the words that had poured out of him before. What has emerged from the suffering is a humble masterpiece of being. "The stroke has given me a new perspective to share about aging, a perspective that says, 'Don't be a wise elder, be an incarnation of wisdom,'" writes Ram Dass in the introduction. The energy of this new state of awareness resonates under the words of this work. Ram Dass delves in to the aspects of aging that terrify most of us-loss of roll and independence, the threat of senility-and affirms there is an awareness in each of us that transcends all the attributes that necessarily diminish with age. Ram Dass shows readers of all ages that it is possible to stay present in the midst of suffering, to be still and know that God is here now. (June). Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I could use a lot of fluffy words to describe this beautiful book because it is … beautiful. And yet, I needed this book at this place in time in my life. I had visions and ideas that this book would read like all of the other teaching books of Ram Dass but I was shown wrong. There is a straight forward, easy to digest approach to this book. Ram narrates this book … rather than teaches and so in some small way, it fell a little short of my expectations. And yet … it was relatable, sweet, insightful and very relevant. I did find myself skipping over parts because … well, because they just bored me! I guess I don’t have to digest everything Ram has to say and I gave myself permission to jump forward … but only small jumps! There are very healing nuggets in this book that struck me straight to the core. The first time I pulled out my highlighter pen and my Post-it-note page saver tab, was on page 5; “But now I’m learning to take my healing into my own hands. Healing is not the same as curing, after all; healing does not mean going back to the way things were before, but rather allowing what is now to move us closer to God”.Straight away … reality check!!! How many of us are trying to get back to some place that felt a hell of a lot more comfortable than it does currently?! There’s no going back, only allowing grace to show us a path forward from this moment. I was broadsided by this revelation … broadsided! There’s a gentle nudge to keep moving and Ram Dass is right along there with us. Pain, physical and emotional, is at the base of this book. With that being said, it's not a book of gloom and doom but rather a path of honoring and relinquishing old ways ... accepting a process. Aging is a process and if you’re like me, it’s a deep descent into the unknown black and murky waters. There’s no rule book to follow and each path is so different because each of us is so different and yet, Ram touches some place in all of us.I came to appreciate the space I’m in and the path I will follow. I’m learning how to ‘Allow’ the process rather than fight it and to honor the changes. The thing about changes is it’s an endless, never ceasing opportunity to judge because we don’t understand it. It can be frightening to not know what is happening and what is coming and Ram will invite you to settle in and allow, love and appreciate the vast opportunity to draw closer to God. He offers his insights that he has gleaned from his own experiences and he will offer stories of those he was associated with or close to. I appreciate the stories because with each story, I found a piece of myself which always offered a moment of healing.I found this book to be very healing for me. I could relate to so much in this book and Ram’s own experiences. On page 185, “Before I had the stroke, I was full of fears about aging, and one of my major fears was about the sicknesses that might be lurking ahead. Gandhi says that before you can get to God, you’ve got to confront your fears.”I realize that not everyone is trying to get to God. There are those who have been on a path or are currently on a path to discover who they think they are … not so much who they think God is and yet, we’re all trying to get to that place of joy and peace. Whatever path we are taking, aging will enrich it, magnify it and draw us closer to all that we seek. It’s the judgments we attach to the process that mess us up.I may pick this book up again in another 5 or so years when I forget or when I am looking for some nourishment to help me digest the impeding changes. Sometimes I want to stay young forever because there is innocence in the lack of wisdom and yet, understanding what I understand now is quite delicious and soul satisfying. It’s a rite of passage to age and if I can settle in, release the judgments and tap into the wisdom that is being imparted at each moment, there is a whole new life awaiting me.Welcome to the aging process.

My life radically changed in 1970-1971. Part of it was due to books, opening up the vistas of life. My mind was changed by what I read, and by what I did as a result of what I read. BE HERE NOW by "Baba" Ram Das, introduced practices I still embrace. Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, for instance, helped supplement the psychedelics I was involved in using, and distributing. STILL HERE was great to read this year, published in 2000, after his stroke; there were parallels to my life: my father's strokes, his friends strokes, my cancer and treatment challenges. I am still here, after three deadly encounters (May 2009; July 2009; April 2012), so his theme of embracing death and dying is spot on. I can go on to read his later books with joy. I thank those who write to us with their life experiences with hope and determination.

I've been a fan of Ram Dass since the 70's, when a friend introduced me to "Be Here Now." That book influenced me like no other.Fast forward to today, I have severe chronic thoracic back pain which restricts me to bed for all but a few hours per day (I'm 53). Everything about my life, or what's left of it, has changed. This book has helped me through, over and over. I read it, re-read it, and chew on passages over and over. The book stays on my bedstand constantly, so I can pick it up and read a section on Lonliness, Suffering, Loss of Role, Powerlessness, Depression, Facing Fear, Dependency, The Gift of Service, Releasing the Past, Learning to Grieve, Shedding Attachment to the Future, Learning To Die, Preparing for Death, etc. The book is a treasure trove of wisdom, beautifully concieved and written with love and compassion for you, the reader.I have never been a religious person, and do not accept Ram Dass' own belief in reincarnation. But the pages of the book devoted to religious aspects are relatively few, and because the book is so profound and yet down to Earth, anyone, regardless of their personal philosophy or religion, can benefit greatly from this wisdom.

I read "" Be Here Now" in the 70's so it is particularly fitting to read this second chapter of the life of Ram Dass. As I am wrestling with health issues and aging, quite suddenly by the way, this gift through Ram Dass is enlightening, practical and most of all comforting.

This is an excellent read. American society does not provide any rituals or rites of passage for getting old. In fact, unlike other societies, we are deemed to be useless and often a burden to our family members. This book teaches one to look into one's inner self for the answers to many unanswered questions. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for answers on transitioning to elder hood.

I marvel at how this man continues to inspire. Ram Dass, you are awesome! This book is the perfect gift for anyone who is dealing with the aging process - either their own or a loved one. Not only do our needs change as we age but so do our wants, as he eloquently points out. By the time I finished the book I was less attached to things that no longer served me and more curious about what lies ahead.I highly recommend this book for people of any age for whom aging is an issue.

What an amazing perspective Ram Dass gives in this book. I feel that anyone of any age would receive so much by reading Still Here. To be aware that the aging process is about accumulating experiences to not only help ourselves but others.....if we all concentrated on that what a better place we would be creating. Thank you Ram Dass!
