I read this book for two reasons, with the first being it is the Goodreads February Discussion for Books Hot Off the Pressesand the second is my participation in the 2014 HUB Reading Challenge. This book is on the list of the 2014 Top Ten Best Fiction for Young Adults. Rose Justice is a transport pilot, who grew up outside Hershey, PA. It is during the war that Rose's plane is intercepted, she is captured by the Germans and taken to the Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she is a prisoner for six months. Rose and the other captives (who are there much longer)endure beatings, torture, experimentation, and deprivation. It is during her imprisonment and after, as she recuperates in Paris that the full story emerges. What was so wonderful about this story was the "family" Rose formed while in Ravensbrück and it was these bonds that enabled them to endure and in many cases, survive. Wein weaves the importance of family throughout the whole book; with Rose's Hershey family, her pilot friends who are her family before her capture and the Rabbits, Lisette, Irina, Roza, Karolina and others who are her camp family. Rose uses her poetry and storytelling with her concentration camp friends to as a way to remember life before and survive each day whatever way they could. It is during her imprisonment (and after) with the Hamburg Ravensbrück Trials and the Doctors' Trial against Nazi war criminals that Rose emerges as a much stronger person; a writer and medical student, and is able to bear witness in her own way to the atrocities of the camp and let the world know the names of all 75 of the Rabbits who were maimed (and many killed) by Nazis due to their experimentation. Readers will love the women (pilots, survivors, and those who do not survive) in this book; their bravery, fury, compassion, defiance, craziness, and beauty. Highly recommended!

Really a good book. I recommend it! The story really sucks you in and you almost feel like you are in the cockpit with Rose, side by side with Rode in the pow camp, waiting for the war to end, help to come. Some of the things that have happened to some of the characters is so sad and probably will (and should) bother you a little. Some have been experimented on and, knowing that those things did really take place makes it all the more heartbreaking. Still, it’s a great read and something that I would be comfortable letting my 13 year old read. I personally would want to have read it as well, as some of the things about pow camp and the prisoners may be worth discussing. The “B word” is used a few times.

"While flying an Allied fighter plane from Paris to England, American ATA pilot and amateur poet, Rose Justice, is captured by the Nazis and sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious women's concentration camp. Trapped in horrific circumstances, Rose finds hope in the impossible through the loyalty, bravery and friendship of her fellow prisoners: a once glamorous French novelist whose Jewish husband and three young sons have been killed, a resilient young Polish girl who has been used as a human guinea pig by Nazi doctors, and a female fighter pilot and military ace for the Soviet air force. But will that be enough to endure the fate that's in store for her?"I've been waiting so long and have been so excited for Rose Under Fire, the companion to the brilliant Code Name Verity. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get my hands on an ARC, but the book finally came out September 10th. Like Code Name Verity, Rose Under Fire takes a little while to actually get into, before it becomes the amazing, touching, heartbreaking book I knew it would be. As other reviewers have said, Rose Under Fire is less emotionally intense and less intense in general than Code Name Verity, but it's still a great book, and might be a better one depending on what your preferences are. Oddly enough, I didn't cry during Code Name Verity, or Rose Under Fire for that matter, but to me, Rose Under Fire felt much more close, more real, perhaps because before Rose is captured there are lots of descriptions of daily life and that makes her experiences in the concentration camp all the more awful in comparison. Still, I felt very emotionally wrought and rung out after reading both of these books. They're the kind of books where you need to read something light right afterwards to recover.Rose Justice is an interesting and good new character. I'm glad that we got to meet an amazing new narrator, who I really fell in love with. That said, I didn't love most of the poems that were in the book, though a few of them were pretty good. It was a nice idea, but it didn't work very well for me; I'm not exactly sure why. There were lots of excellent anecdotes in Rose Under Fire; maybe it was less sensational, but in some ways that made it a better read. I really enjoyed a lot of the descriptions, and it was a lot of the small things that Rose writes about that really got me, that hit me, and made me feel like crying or laughing or both. The very first one was Rose's description of the barrage balloons: "I can't get over how beautiful the barrage balloons are. I can't even talk about it to anyone - they all think I am crazy. But when you're in the air, and the sky above you is a sea of gray mist and the land below you is all green, the silver balloons float in between like a school of shining silver whales, bobbing a little in the wind. They are as big as buses, and I and every other pilot have a healthy fear of them because their tethering cables are loaded with explosives to try to snarl up enemy aircraft. But they are just magical from above, great big silver bubbles filling the sky. Incredible. It is just incredible that you can notice something like that when your face is so cold you can't feel it anymore, and you know perfectly well you are surrounded by death, and the only way to stay alive is to endure the howling wind and hold your course. And still the sky is beautiful." I loved those two paragraphs. I also loved the scene where Maddie and Rose confront the boys who are trying to take apart the bomb.I mentioned the little things that hit me really hard. One of those was just a candlewick bedspread. Here's part of the passage: "It was the stupid candlewick bedspread's fault! Mrs. Hatch's bedspreads feel the same as the ones Mother has out on the sleeping porch. Anyway, I had the candlewick on my bed pulled up to my chin last night, and after I thought about the house party, I started thinking about the sleeping porch...I got so homesick I began to cry. I just couldn't stop thinking about the sleeping porch. It's funny what sets you off. You miss people the most - really it is Polly and Alice and Sandy and Fran whom I am lonely for - but it is the candlewick bedspread that makes me ache with longing to be home."There was also another really poignant small moment, when Rose is first captured by the Germans: "Someone came in and gave me a cup of fake coffee and something a lot like a bologna sandwich, which I would have eaten if I had realized it was the last bologna sandwich I was ever going to see. But I just couldn't eat. I have dreams about that sandwich." That was so awful, as well as being a great piece of foreshadowing.Wein also includes some good descriptions of the war itself. "They've [the Germans] lost. They must know they've lost - that they're on the run. It's all so pointless. It shouldn't take another year. But I bet it will. It's not desperation - there is something inhuman in it. That is what I find so creepy. Five years of destruction and mayhem, lives lost everywhere, shortages of food and fuel and clothing -- and the insane mind behind it just urges us all on and on to more destruction. And we all keep playing." It was very chilling.I had tons of passages marked in the book, but I can't spout all the of the amazing quotes in Rose Under Fire; it would just take too long. It was somehow more emotional to me, not necessarily better, but more relatable. Both of these books are definitely among my favorites. Just like Code Name Verity, there are great female friendships in Rose Under Fire: between Maddie and Rose before Rose is captured, and between the woman suffering in the concentration camp. Really, just as many awful things happen in Rose Under Fire as in Code Name Verity: torture and worse. It's just, I suppose, a more quiet book. And the ending is happier, at least in some ways.I loved that Rose was an American; it was a different take and one that makes sense. I enjoyed reading from her perspective a lot; she can kind of look at England and Germany with an impartial eye, but she cares just as deeply about the war and about flying. She narrates the story of her experiences in the camp from after she's rescued, so we know she doesn't die. But she's been deeply scarred, inwardly and outwardly.Elizabeth Wein's writing style is so distinctive and easily recognizable, and yet I can't quite put my finger down on what it is that makes her writing her's and makes it so deeply moving. Any ideas? Like in Code Name Verity, the book is narrated through personal writings and some letters, although the set-up is different, and it's not as ingeniously plotted or thriller-like. Because, you know, Code Name Verity had that whole mystery which took your breath away, which is a whole level of complexity that Rose Under Fire didn't really have. Still, I just freaking loved it.The book has some great similes and metaphors, such as in the passage about the barrage balloons. The writing is just beautiful, and it captured this amazing story. I would highly, highly recommend Rose Under Fire, whether or not you've read Code Name Verity (although it will spoil the ending of CNV).

From those humble beginnings, an international grilling revolution was born. Today, Weber has grown to become the leading brand of charcoal and gas grills and accessories, and George’s kettle has become a backyard icon.

Weber's Big Book of Burgers has been another GREAT purchase from Weber's author and chef Jamie Purviance. This is my tenth cookbook from Weber; as you can see from the list below. All of the recipes my family and I have tried from Big Book of Burgers have been OUTSTANDING. Our favorite so far has been the Beef Burgers with Camembert and red onion jam. A close second was the Bronco Burgers with Smoked mozzarella and barbecue sauce. This cookbook has over 90 burger recipes for Beef, Bison, Lamb, Pork, Poultry, Seafood and Vegetarian. And don't forget about the Hot dogs, Sausages, Brats, Sides, Toppings and Drinks. I really enjoy the vast amount and variety of recipes since I grill year round in Washington state and four times a week. There are several reasons why I like Weber's grilling cookbooks.1. The recipes do not repeat from one cookbook to another cookbook.2. Easy to follow instructions.3. Doesn't require extensive grilling knowledge/skill to create these amazing dishes.4. I ALWAYS receive praise from family and friends on the delicious taste.5. The ingredients are simple and commonly found items.6. The book construction is well made and sturdy for everyday use.7. Almost every recipe has an associated photo.Weber's Big Book of BurgersWeber's Way to GrillWeber's Real GrillingWeber's Big Book of GrillingWeber's Time to GrillWeber's New Real GrillingWeber's SmokeWeber's Charcoal GrillingWeber's on the grill: Chicken & SidesWeber's on the grill: Steak & Sides

Having been trying recipe's that come in from Weber via the email, I'm really excited to get into, and start marking our favorites. Just the ideas alone are worth having this book for. Got my copy for my last 48th birthday. Not every recipe is superb but the ideas are great! For example :) we got a recipe for hot dogs topped with onions and jalepeno's that are cut in strips, and then simmered in a little aluminum pan on the grill. It was alright, BUT... we added strips of bell pepper and simmerred the vegies in Dr. Pepper and WOW; I may never have traditional hot dogs again. Same goes for Weber's Buffalo Chicken Wing Burgers - we tweaked it, and BAM!ANYWAY - super nice gift for any Grill Dads out there :)

When I ordered this book I was expecting a book on burgers and nothing else. well I was pleasantly surprised when I opened it and found other topics too. There are chapters on hot dogs, sausages and brats, a chapter on sides and toppings, a chapter on drinks, and a chapter on grilling basics. This is basically a great book for your upcoming summer parties. While the burger chapter is by far the largest chapter in this book, it is broken down to a few sub-chapters. Naturally you need to start with grinding and making your own burgers. Then it breaks down further into ingredients like lamb burgers, pork burgers, seafood, vegetarian, and oh yeah, beef. The amount of variation in this book in regards to breads, meats, and toppings will ensure you find a burger combination you will love.Another great book by Jamie Purviance, which I have come to expect from him.

Mr. Purviance strikes gold again. Excellent recipes, insightful tips and information, sharp pictures, and colorful illustrations make this book a must have. My kids enjoy thumbing through this book and letting their eyes guide what we are going to try next.I appreciate the burger variety and the inclusion of brats and hot dogs. The side dishes and drinks round out the options. While some of the burgers are wildly exotic, many of them are subtle in their differences. I'm convinced if you follow Jamie's techniques and cook over a clean burning fire, the results will be consistently delicious.

You know when you buy a cookbook and use only three recipes out of it? This book is NOT that! I have to say that I have tried many of the recipes, and most have been delicious. It is really fun experimenting with new ingredients, the recipes are easy and most of the ingredients I had on hand. I put a check by the ones that were good so I can try them again later. I have referenced this book the most over the last year, for great burgers, sides and salads. Lots of pictures which I really like in a cookbook. It's informative too, about grilling techniques and how to build a burger - most important. You won't be disappointed, it's a lovely addition to your collection.

If you enjoy BBQ'n and want to try some new recipes this is a must have. This is my third Jamie Purviance book that I have purchased and he never seems to fail at providing new methods. I have tried a lot of burger recipes over the years and this book will keep me busy for many more to come. This book is not only burgers, it has a ton of sea food and hot dog recipes as well. Whether you are starting off in grilling or advanced, this book will open your eyes and make your mouth water!!

A beautifully-illustrated book that is filled with outstanding tips and tricks for grilling and loads of different recipes for beef hamburgers and several other varieties of grilled deliciousness, you can't go wrong with this one...if you enjoy grilling and making tasty burgers in a variety of interesting ways, give it a shot. You won't be disappointed.

Good, but not Jamie's best. I love Jamie's videos and all the instruction he's given me over the years, and I appreciate the content of this book but it is not as good as I was hoping. Still, it's pretty awesome to get anything from Jamie since he is a grilling genius.

English on the left, transliteration in the middle, and Arabic on the right. It has an introduction in the beginning with context and historical events as well. I'm putting four stars though because honestly, the binding's not the best I've seen. There are pages that are crooked or creased by the way it was bound. But it's readable and sufficient, and the rarity of the transliteration makes it valuable to me (learning Arabic).

This book “The Holy Quran- Transliteration in Roman Script with Arabic Text and English Translation (New)” was purchased after a review of internet sources for best “English” translation of Koran. The reason being, as the authors of this great “source” work on page iv state that understanding the Koran “can be an easy task for those favored with guidance from Allah, especially those blessed by an understanding of Arabic, the language of divine communication. But for those not acquainted with Arabic, their ignorance is a barrier between them and this source of guidance and illumination.” Furthermore, continuing on page iv- in reference to the Koran the authors assert the Korans “contents are not confined to a particular theme or style, but contain the foundations for an entire system of life….which range from specific articles of faith and commandments to general moral teachings, rights and obligations, crime and punishment, personal and public law, and a host of other private and social concerns.” This is in fact keeping with “The Arab Mind” by Raphael Pati, and available at Amazon.com, and should be read by those attempting to understand Arabic-Islamic culture, in addition to the actual Koran. This version of the Koran is in fact keeping Arabic style and read right to left, the text is very clear, the Suri’s are named, and place revealed to the Prophet Muhammad listed. Like, “Surat al-Jinn-72” on page 638 and “revealed at Makkah.” Or “Surat-al Infitar-82” “the Cleaving Asunder” on page 659 once again “revealed at Makkah.” The Index, starting on page 681 is very good and almost a cross reference like many of the Christian Bibles’ numerous Concordances!Like many books, this work should be read, like “The Reckoning-Iraq and the Legacy of Saddam Hussein” by Sandra Mackey, as was required by some US Military servicemen prior to deployment OIF/OEF to glean a much better understanding of the culture, customs, traditions and beliefs of the societies they are in fact being deployed into and may have to work with- as completely different than the US Judeo-Christian culture and society! Might just save a life or foster better working relationships….??? For when in the preverbal “Lion’s Den” does not one wish to know what the Lion likes and dislikes and how he thinks????For comparative religious studies, this would be a more than phenomenal work, but the issue once again comes back to Arabic, and “if one cannot fully understand this work” without a fluent grasp of Arabic, then how is it to be truly understood it, other than through by a Religious Imam of Sunni or Shia faith? Keeping that in mind, perhaps some of the works of the United States, Elijah Muhammad of the Nation of Islam might prove more than useful, such as “Our Savior Has arrived”, “The Secrets of Freemasonry” “Yakub (Jacob) The Father of Mankind,” and perhaps his seminal work “Message To a Black Man In America” all available at Amazon.com? Furthermore, there are numerous references to Christians and Jews within the Koran, and would perhaps be useful to have read the Christian Bible, the Torah, as well as something like Raphael Pati’s “The Jewish Mind,” etc.. also available at Amazon.com, along with numerous other works regarding these faiths for a complete comparison of these three religions! Then for “legal” reason’s, like the US debate about Shira Law, one should probably also read “An Explanatory Memorandum: From the Archives of the Muslim Brotherhood in America (Center for Security Policy Archival Series)” Paperback – March 8, 2013 by Mohamed Akram (Author), David Reaboi (Author), Frank J Gaffney Jr (Preface), available at Amazon.com and other works, along with this version of the Koran, to fully grasp the topics contained there-in or glean some informative understating of the possible issues of Shira Law in the US! For instance, the US Legal system is largely based off English “common law” and foundations in the Judeo-Christian vein. Shira Law is solely based off Koranic teachings and other Islamic works and varies between Sunni-Shia, country, world region, Islamic community, etc…. This work could help illuminate some of these differences. This is a very good, scholarly work on the Koran, the basic foundation of an entire way of life for a significant portion of the worlds population, and should be read, or at least perused, by those in US considering any “interaction” with the worlds “Ummah” as defined by authors on page X- “Literally, a nation but is usually applied to the Muslim Brotherhood!”

I ordered this as a new sister because it was highly recommended for being easy to read. Someone got a green cover, I have Burgundy and they advertise blue. The pages are wrinkled as if the printer was too hot or got wet.

I have nothing negative to say.I'm extremely happy with the purchase and the Quran is beautiful! However, it is not blue like the photo shows. It's a forest green kind of color.

This is exactly what I was hoping for - a full transliteration of the Holy Qur'an, with parallel Arabic text. It also contains, as a bonus, an English translation as well. The three texts, English, transliterated Arabic, and the Qur'an itself, are presented in three columns on each page. That makes it quite a decent size book. It is also nicely presented, although the quality of the paper could be improved slightly.

Very high quality purchase. Very pleased. I bought this to help me learn Arabic, and while I still don't know arabic, the English translation, transliteration, and arabic text are great for the cross comparison.

Perfect gift for My husband- He really enjoys reading this book!!

great version of the Qur'an im happy with this book, it explains it self very well without confusion and i love the fact it reads like a true Arabic book from right to left, plus i love the color of the cover and its illustrations. thank you!
