From Booklist

For the fiscally conservative library, this fine, small book is an ideal substitute for the recent $18,000 facsimile of Ireland's renowned Book of Kells, the most famous of all illuminated medieval Gospels. This representation might not include all 680 illuminated pages, but it does offer 110 color illustrations, including dozens of enlargements, that permit the reader to ponder the excruciatingly complex ornamentation which makes the Book a masterpiece of Celtic interlacing. Meehan, keeper of manuscripts at Trinity College Dublin, which has housed the Book since the seventeenth century, provides erudite but direct commentary about the Book's background, its motifs and themes, and even the material from which it is constructed. Along with the Lindisfarne Gospel, this ranks as perhaps the most beautiful piece of medieval era writing and artistry ever found. While not a page by page reproduction, the full-page, full-color portraits show the Book of Kells at it's finest. The illumination, range of colors, intricate designs and carefully woven religious symbolism bring the dark ages back to life as you turn the pages. Some pages exhibit almost impossible levels of detail for the time in which they were written, though I think they would be a worthy challenge for even modern tools and expert calligraphers to reproduce. In short, well worth the price and a fascinating piece of history.

The Book of Kells is one of history's greatest art works - highlighting the four gospels of the New Testament with magnificent Celtic illustrations of inexhaustible beauty and intricacy. This book is a good explanation of the book, ranging down to artistic minutia of its letters and pictures. Unfortunately, I did not realize that the paperback version does not have color plates and lacks the overall majesty evinced in the larger hardback variety. To teach or lecture on the Book of Kells, the hardback version is superior. The Church, The Arts, and Shaping the World for Christ: How and why Christians should engage in the arts at church, at home, and in all areas of life.

I just received my copy today and it's impressive. The reproductions are clear & detailed and beautiful. The information presented is easy to understand and interesting. I love the weight and feel of this book. It doesn't look cheap and it comes with its own thick cover. I'll be displaying my copy in our Library as soon as I find the right book stand. If you're thinking of buying this, I don't think you'll be disappointed I wasn't.

The book of Kells consists if the Latin text of the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It also contains calendrical information for finding dates of Easter and other Christian festivals. The book has been lavishly illuminated by sumptuous illustrations in staggering colour and minute detail. While the book of Kells is far from unique, it is one of the greatest examples of this type of document and one of the earliest, dating from about 800 AD in north western England. Due to a series of political intrigues, it ended up in Ireland soon after (or even during?) its production. This book consists of two parts: The first part contains full colour reproductions of much of the original artwork and some of the text. The second part contains an extensive explanation of the book including its history, iconography and details of the subtleties of the intricate Celtic patterns and their (complex) relationship to the sacred text. Such works have much greater value than just the beautiful artwork (which has never been surpassed since) but also reveals much about the culture and prevailing theology - invaluable for the historiography alone. The aspect that I cannot understand is the detail in the artwork - all accomplished before magnifying lenses were available, but the detail is only visible when the artwork is enlarged many times. The illuminators must have had exceptional eyesight and very steady hands indeed.

It's so hard to find a book about The Book of Kells with large, clear, quality illustrations that doesn't cost $800. This one definitely hits the mark. There are several editions of this book. I bought the fourth edition and my library had the second edition. The differences between the two were slight (some colors were richer, and some prints were more glossy), but importantly, the size of the prints were pretty large, about 5"x 7"A wonderful feature about this publication are the final plates containing "cleaned up" letterforms from the Book of Kells. The linework is crisp and clean, and the letters are fairly large too (about 3" tall). In short, if you're looking for a good copy of the art of the Book of Kells, this is an excellent one.

The Book of Kells, a masterful illuminated latin Gospel form ca. 800 AD was composed under the direction of St. Columkille of Iona [Scotland] at Kells, Ireland. I was priveleged to view the original 3 times, twice at its home in the Trinty College Library, Dblin, and once in the late '70s at the Philadelphia Museum of Art when the National Treasures of Ireland were on tour in the US. AT the Philly Museum, The Book of Kells was accompanied by armed guards. Arguably, it is one of the greatest illuminated Gospels manuscripts from the "Dark Ages," a masterful depiction of the Hiberno-Norse style. It is certainly among the top National Treasures of Ireland. A few years ago it even was the subject of an Award-winning animated film (for adults as much as children), aptly named "The Secret of Kells," How could anyone interested in art from this period and/or proud of his or her Irish heritage not want to own least a piece of this ? With this moderately priced volume almost anyone can ! Sure, there are better, more comprehensive, and expensive depictions. If you can afford those get one of them, if not, this is the very thing. I have it sitting on my piano open to an illuminated page on a late medieval knockoff book stand. Or, it's exactly right for your coffee table. This is not something designed to waste away on a bookshelf gathering dust. It's like your best pressed Sunday suit at the right price !

An amazing book with very clear detailed color photographs of different parts of the work. The text also provides a lot of detailed background information about the Book of Kells. A must have for anyone interested in art history and/or the Book of Kells.

I am very pleased that I acquired this wonderful book which was published the same size as the original. The pages are of thick stock. The printing is excellent. The historical art alone is a touch stone to the past. The historical comparison with the few remaining similar books is also a touchstone to the past and very informative. I will be enjoying this book for a very long time.
