I wanted to get a book to teach me the basics. This did the trick and was an easy read. Overall it does what I expected. I could use more techncical details, but that is for the engineer in me.

Amazon asks us to rate books by stars, but when I read a book about webcasting -- especially when it purports to be a guide for beginners -- I use the "Yeahbut" scale. As in the number of times I scream "Yeah, but..." when the author(s) make some simplistic statement about a complicated issue.I'm happy to report that the "Yeahbut" issue really never came up with this book. Scattered throughout the chapters are sidebars -- some labled "Alerts," some "Author's Tips," and others "Inside the Industry" -- that do a nice job of expanding on issues raised in the main text. Overall, the authors do a fine balancing act between being too simplistic and overloading the reader with detail.Disclosure: Part of my job is producing webcasts, and until recently was in an academic setting where I also taught classes on the subject. I am acquainted with both authors through professional meetings and their other writings. That being said, I have no hesitation in strongly recommending this book.What's unique about the structure of this book is that it covers both technical and business issues equally well. It's straightforward in its approach to technical matters -- lots of screenshots to illustrate settings and controls -- but it also lays out some essential considerations that are all-too-often overlooked by the beginner. Does this webcast really have to be live? What can I reasonably expect from an audience in terms of its connectivity? Can we handle this ourselves, or do we need to outsource this? Can we afford the bandwidth to do this? Folks just starting out seldom realize that getting a computer to spew out video and audio packets over the Internet is darn near the easiest thing in the world to do. Having content worth seeing, well, that's the hard part.One of the challenges of writing about webcasting is that the subject's a moving target. Examples in the book are heavily weighted toward RealNetworks and Microsoft's Windows Media. Quicktime is covered with respect to embedding the player in web pages and creating metafiles, but is generally sold short as a streaming platform. Likewise, Flash is largely dismissed. Both decisions were reasonable at the time the book was written and released. QuickTime Broadcaster wasn't the product it is now with it's use of the H.264 codec, and Flash 8 was still some months away. I'd expect a second edition to use more examples from each of these, but the real meat of this book -- the business, video and audio production, budget and personnel considerations -- are really quite independent of the particular streaming architecture one happens to use. And, for all the hype surrounding Flash here in the Spring of 2006, Windows Media and Real are still the industry heavyweights.There are other good books about the technical side of webcasting -- Damien Stolarz's "Mastering Internet Video : A Guide to Streaming and On-Demand Video" comes to mind as a non-Steve-Mack-authored example -- but Steve Mack and Dan Rayburn have written a unique book: a comprehensive survey of an often misunderstood topic that is both clear and immediately useful in a practical way. If you're new to webcasting, make this book one of your first purchases.

Dan Rayburn and Steve Mack are two industry veterans with incredible insight into the process and business of event webcasting. Steve brings a wealth of hands-on experience producing high profile events, and Dan knows the ins and outs of the business models and the digital media industry landscape.This book does a great job detailing, step by step, all the things you should consider when producing your own webcast...from how to deal with contracting issues, where to place cameras and microphones, how to deal with venue staff and third party vendors, and many other practical tips.If you want to get a head start on webcasting, this is the best book out there to get you going.

This book addresses the tight interaction of the business requirements, the technical solution and control of the unexpected. There is nothing especially complex about planning a webcast. But there are so many factors, so many moving parts, that it takes years to build the expertise to properly plan. This is an essential tool for identifying wild flowers but I wish I had purchased the flexibound version. It didn't dawn on me that the Kindle Paperweight doesn't have color, so none of the photos are in color. This makes it very difficult to identify the wildflowers. Do not purchase this for a Kindle Paperwhite. I've given the book 5 stars because it is an excellent reference tool. Usefulness for a Kindle would be zero.

Nothing to dislike - Like the arrangement ( by blossom color) and the field guide friendly features, such as rulers on the flaps, and the binding and covers. Not one to sit on the shelf. Mike Eason (founder of he Texas Flora Facebook group) has done himself proud and all of us in Texas favor with this compilation.

I liked the fact that there was a very good, almost scientific description of the plant, where it can be located, the soil type it will occur in, and bloom time, in addition to grouping the plants by bloom color.

A very well thought-out book. Arranged by color, and then alphabetically by scientific name within each color section. The photos are very true to the color of the actual plant. Descriptions are concise and clear. A welcome addition to the Texas flora book selection.

Plants you think you know may have completely different names, as there are lots of recent name changes. Previous names are not listed.

I bought this book as a treat for myself and have not been disappointed. If you want to learn about Texas wildflowers, this is the book for you. Beautiful photos, well-organized, and easy to navigate. I’m very pleased with my purchase!

I wanted to love this book but it didn't quite hit the mark for me I would give it 3.5/5 as it left me craving more information about the projects that Phil has worked on. I admire and love Phil's work so much I wanted to know more about the thought processes and the designing process that went into each project. I have followed Phil as an artist for quite a few years now and am amazed by all of his art projects and will continue to follow his next adventures as an artist.This book covers the following:Artists StatementSeries of works, Name, medium and sizeGoodbye Art introduction5 of his 23 projects have more detailed pictures with name, medium and size, there is also some small pictures of the other worksArt Happening introduction6 of his 16 projects have more detailed pictures with name, medium and size, there is also some small pictures of the other worksBackground information about PhilSo all in all there are only 4 pages of text, this is more of a photo book than an information book that shows the amazing art that Phil has created, I still love all his work but would have loved more information on individual projects, something more to read. Many of Phil's multimedia art pieces can be viewed on YouTube--in motion. This book captures several of Phil's classic works found there and allows us to ponder, think, and reflect on the many and varied processes used. The Artist Statement, The Goodbye Art Introduction, the Art Happening Introduction and the organized Table of Contents provide a structure for viewing the many colored and some black and white images.I am an artist and an art educator. I work with future and current teachers. This book certainly provides an immediate way on multiple levels for my students to discuss art, the art making process, and current issues in our world. I have been using Phil's artwork for my six years of being an art educator. His work is relevant and just risqué or naughty enough for my high school kids to want to see more. The addition of "How to Tattoo a Banana" coincided perfectly with my addition of middle school classes in my teaching schedule and was a great place for ideas. The arrival of his educator website came when my district received chrome books which became a weekly tool for me to use during downtime or as a pre-project activity. This newest addition to the world of Phil is impressive. All of his best works in one place for my students to view and ask more about. Of course it can't be compared with the amazing visuals and music choices that accompany his work online... Maybe a dvd next?!

In viewing Phil's' art, one realizes as so often is true in life, that it is not the destination but the journey that adds real meaning to our endeavors. Along the way we may find it sometimes, very frustrating (like having the worms crawl out of your desired shape), many times especially cathartic (like spitting food and being able to call it art), but always truly inspiring, with everything you've learned along the way in the making of your own masterpiece. It brought to mind a poem from the Greek poet Costantine Cavafy's "Ithaca"; "When you set out for distant Ithaca fervently wish your journey may be long, full of adventures and with much to learn.............Ithaca gave you your fair voyage. Without her you would not have ventured on the way." This is a beautifully put together book, with lots of pictures of the shoe, celebrities and icons like David Bowie and John Lennon wearing a pair, and of course, of the man himself, Stan Smith (Pictures accompanied of course with text and stories). The dust cover is interesting: it is transparent and it has the book's title "Stan Smith: Some People Think I'm A Shoe" written on it. It's the first coffee table book I have that has this type of dust cover. However, if there is one thing that I wish was different about this book, it's that I wish the paper was glossy. Aside from that one thing however, I think it's well worth it if you're into fashion, Adidas, sneaker culture, or tennis. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy.
