About the Author
Michael Eason is the head of the San Antonio Botanical Garden rare plant conservation department. He is also a conservation botanist for Texas Flora, a botanical consulting company. Eason has previously worked with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the Millennium Seed Bank Project. He volunteers his time for organizations like the Wildflower Center, the Native Plant Society of Texas, and the Nature Conservancy.

The more I look through this new Texas wildflower field guide the better it gets. I'm impressed they managed to get so much information between the covers of one guide-sized book. Our family has accumulated many wildflower field guides, through many years of interest; this one seems the most comprehensive. Where most guides picture one example of a genus, there are more pictured here for use in Texas' varied habitats where details may be confusing and make it hard to pin down an identity. This guide's worth will be proven by its use in many hands.
With his newly published “Wildflowers of Texas†(Timber Press), botanist and educator Michael Eason has produced an authoritative and beautiful book that will serve equally well as a field guide and reference work. In clear and succinct language, the author’s knowledge and love of the flora of Texas comes through on every page.A short chapter titled How to Use This Book explains the organization of the subject matter, leading off with flower color, plant family, Latin and scientific names, habitat and bloom times. Following that are chapters on Climate, Geography, and Ecoregions; Viewing Wildflowers; Plant Families and Glossary. These 40 pages make an excellent foundational study and can be considered a short course in Texas botany.The main part of the book is smartly laid out with three entries per page. The photographs are clear and chosen to show flowers, leaves and stems. The text entries are pleasingly concise and consistent in format and style, using botanical terms that are referenced in the Glossary, and ending with a brief description of each plant’s range.Budding and seasoned botanists, and everybody that loves plants, will enjoy this superbly presented, nicely sized and attractive book, which is also available on Kindle. This is an essential tool for identifying wild flowers but I wish I had purchased the flexibound version. It didn't dawn on me that the Kindle Paperweight doesn't have color, so none of the photos are in color. This makes it very difficult to identify the wildflowers. Do not purchase this for a Kindle Paperwhite. I've given the book 5 stars because it is an excellent reference tool. Usefulness for a Kindle would be zero.
Nothing to dislike - Like the arrangement ( by blossom color) and the field guide friendly features, such as rulers on the flaps, and the binding and covers. Not one to sit on the shelf. Mike Eason (founder of he Texas Flora Facebook group) has done himself proud and all of us in Texas favor with this compilation.
I liked the fact that there was a very good, almost scientific description of the plant, where it can be located, the soil type it will occur in, and bloom time, in addition to grouping the plants by bloom color.
A very well thought-out book. Arranged by color, and then alphabetically by scientific name within each color section. The photos are very true to the color of the actual plant. Descriptions are concise and clear. A welcome addition to the Texas flora book selection.
Plants you think you know may have completely different names, as there are lots of recent name changes. Previous names are not listed.
I bought this book as a treat for myself and have not been disappointed. If you want to learn about Texas wildflowers, this is the book for you. Beautiful photos, well-organized, and easy to navigate. I’m very pleased with my purchase!
