Review

“Combines candid essays with cultural criticism that will embolden fat people to simply live.” —Bitch Magazine "Eye-opening. . . . This short, accessible book packs a powerful message that will appeal to anyone eager to uncover and dispel cultural myths about beauty." —Publishers Weekly "A manifesto for fat rights and freedom from the tyranny of diet, exercise, and body-image conformity." —Kirkus Reviews "There is a lot of anger here, but there is also a lot of inspiration, and Tovar’s call to action for fat women to embrace their bodies as is will resonate.” —Booklist "A must-read." —w24 “Long-time body positive writer, speaker, and activist Virgie Tovar is gifting brown round girls the book we’ve been hungry for.” –Mitú “In this bold new book, Tovar eviscerates diet culture, proclaims the joyous possibilities of fatness, and shows us that liberation is possible.”—Sarai Walker, author of Dietland“Lucid, joyous, mad as hell, and making a whole lot of sense.” —Joanna Walsh, author of Worlds from the World’s End “Tovar’s words provide crucial guidance, clarity, and support for all those who champion universal body liberation.” —Jessamyn Stanley, author of Every Body Yoga “Fierce, passionate, and poignant, You Have the Right to Remain Fat will inspire you and ignite the revolution.”—Linda Bacon, author of Health at Every Size “This book feels like spending a margarita-soaked day at the beach with your smartest friend. Virgie Tovar shares juicy secrets and makes revolutionary ideas viscerally accessible. You’ll be left enlightened, inspired, happier, and possibly angrier than when you started.” —Joy Nash, actress “Tovar is a vital voice in contemporary activism, media, and feminism. The joy she takes in her own body and life, combined with the righteous anger she expresses at an oppressive world is a truly radical act. She is deeply thoughtful, but does not equivocate. She confronts bigotry, but does not engage with bullshit.” —Kelsey Miller, author of Big Girl “A fantastic book that is witty, warm, and wise.” —Charlotte Cooper, author of Fat Activism: A Radical Social Movement “Virgie Tovar does the thing we need to see more of in political writing: she shares every bit of her humanity. Her clear descriptions of anti-fat bias and the social construction that is ‘diet culture’ make it difficult to disagree with her main point: you are not the problem, society is the problem. The world desperately needs to be told this truth.” —Isabel Foxen Duke, creator of StopFightingFood.com “She excels at critiquing diet culture; describing how it matches the American narrative of failure and success as personal endeavors and how dieting and fatphobia are ideologies that rely upon inducing inferiority. . . . Combining aspects of feminism and women's health, Tovar's impassioned call to action challenges Western beauty norms and how women (and girls) develop self-esteem. Ideal for YA crossover.” —Library Journal “Written with fierce urgency, Tovar’s book boldly dismantles our culture’s grip on our bodies and scrutinizes how fatness and deviations from cultural beauty standards are unjustly vilified.” —Signature

I appreciate Virgie's ability to remind me of things I thought I knew but somehow forgot. I needed this book right now. Even though there is a lot in her experience I haven't endured (e.g., blatant harassment at school, years of dieting/starvation), there is so much in her writing that I do connect with. This book made me feel deeply understood and validated as fat woman, and I cheered at this line from Virgie, as I thought about the life I want to build: "In the dreams I have of my future, I am fat."

This book was fun to read and had so much insight. I found it incredibly empowering!

This book is everything ! “I think about the thousand ways that women in my family were silently (and sometimes outright) expected to give up their lives, their dreams, and their desire, do that they could become the glorified babysitters for the men in their lives who wanted a legacy but none of the the responsibility of child -rearing. I think of the ways that women are expected to become mothers, giving up theirs lives while still being the object of scorn and pity, while men are praised for having dad bods.” It combats fatphobia among other social issues like patriarchy and racism. Definitely one of my new fave feminist!

READ THIS BOOK! If you are looking for a quick but crucial read on the intersection of dieting, fatness, and social justice, do not skip this book! Virgie weaves her own experiences with years of research to drive home necessary lessons on the oppressive nature of the diet industry, the effects of misogyny on dieting and body image, and (among others) the importance of living your life just as you are NOW, not waiting around until some magical day when suddenly all of your problems are solved by shrinking yourself (hint: your problems will NEVER be solved by shrinking yourself, which isn't even sustainably possible!) Virgie takes us all to school with this intelligent, often funny, and sometimes heartbreaking book. Do yourself a favor and read it!

I loved this book! Virgie pulled no punches and gave so many of us the real talk and unapologetic focus on the root causes of fatphobia and our deep entrenchment in diet culture...and gave us a glimpse on how break free. Not merely a feel good guide for fat girls, this book calls for a revolution! More, more, more of this please.

Virgie Tovar has given the world her gifts of intelligent, fierce, deliberate activism for years. This short book encapsulates, and continues to enlarge, the "personal is political" life of fat people, and, therefore, the lives of us all. Gracias from a fat crone who knows the revolution will be everysized, intersectional, and is happening even now.

This is revolution! When you think you’re a pretty good feminist and you need a smack in the face reminder there’s a lot more to learn and a long way to go and it all starts with changing how we treat ourselves.

I loved this book. It’s a quick read, full of deep insights. The writing style is approachable so I feel fine about recommending it to non-academic friends. Virgie succinctly draws connections between misogyny/white supremacy and diet culture/fatphobia, and then states them as the well-researched facts that they are, not as points that are up for debate.A really important read for all people: for fatties like me to feel seen and equipped to advocate for ourselves in a hateful world, and also for thin folx, who are often completely unaware of their own fatphobia and the systemic oppression it perpetuates.Super happy with this purchase and will probably buy more to pass out to friends.
