Paul Theroux is one of my favorite travel writers (his novels? not so much.). I have travelled a lot, though not as much as Theroux, and everywhere I have gone that Theroux writes about, I wind up saying to myself, "He really nailed it". He is dead honest (call it balanced), which sometimes gets him in trouble with the PC crowd, who seem to take exception to every comment that is not wonderful about other cultures. Needless to say, I eagerly snap up any new travel works from him.I did that with this book, thinking it would contain vignettes from his travels. Unfortunately, it has very few of these. A couple of pieces on Africa shine with usual Theroux glow, but most of the book is his musings about famous and semi-famous authors and their lives. Putting it bluntly, "Who cares?" This isn't my cup of tea, though I recognize it as something that floats Theroux's boat. He strays into this territory from time to time even in his travel works.If you can get into this type of material, this book is for you. If not, it will be a disappointment.

This collection is the result of Paul Theroux's boundless curiosity coupled with his talent for expressing his experiences and opinions through writing (he describes himself as a graphomaniac, and we all can be thankful for that). Equally proficient in fiction and non-, his prose zings with authenticity in either medium. Lately though he has been more reflective in his writings, and his unerring observations really cover the gamut, with personal experiences shared with the like of Muriel Spark, Elizabeth Taylor, and remarkably with Robin Williams with whom he shared a bike ride from Sausilito circling Tiburon. Each chapter teaches the reader something about a subject, whether it be the poppiest of the pop (Taylor and Michael Jackson), or, one of my favorite pieces, his piece on Thomas H. Benton, in which he gives the strongest argument yet for visiting artworks "in the paint," so to speak, and not just looking up reproductions. He seemed also to have found in Benton a kindred spirit since both shared a thirst for travel and the real experience as well as the capability of being able to share them through their different mediums, producing accurate, unparalleled renditions of life in their times. Yes, Paul Thereoux is the gift that keeps giving, through his own gift of expression.

Would that Theroux's most recent book were twice as long! His essays are like delving into a treasure trove of memories--of others or off-beat short biographies or simply superb prose. His telling of tea with Muriel Spark is nothing short of hilarious yet bitter-sweet, Thomas Hart Benton's America takes the reader beyond the artist's canvases and in essay after essay, whether on Maugham or Robin Williams or his take on happenings while he lived in England or while traveling in many a maligned country or in a particularly touching portrait of his late father, each of the figures stands out.

Paul Theroux just keeps getting more interesting to me. I buy more books because of his writing than any other author.

I’ve read almost all of Paul’s travel books and prefer that format over this book of essays. Nonetheless, I still learned a lot...if nothing else, some great words to add to my vocabulary!

Paul Theroux’s name never seems to show up in lists of leading American writers of the sort that show up in publications like the New York Review Books. That’s really inexcusable, given the range and number and quality of nbooks he’s created. His novels include fictional biographies and autobiographies, speculations on religion, character studies, science fiction, families, and much more. He combines masterful writing with broad themes that ask important questions about the human question, very unlike the narrow, almost claustrophobic settings of much modern fiction.Theroux’s nonfiction writing is markedly by great skill and uncompromised honesty. He may not always be right, but he’s always absolutely honest about his depiction of the places and people he encounters. He’s not afraid to speak truth to power, be it an African despot or an American President, and perhaps that’s why he’s never achieved the sort of popularity in East Coast literary circles as some of his lesser colleagues. His depictions of his encounters with Pacific Islanders, the English, and others have resulted in angry objections from many critics- “I’ve been there, and they’re nothing like that!”- and while you might quibble with Theroux’s generazations you can’t say he’s not telling you exactly what he believes.In his opening essay, Theroux discusses the act of writing nonfiction. Once he decided to make it his profession, he made the decision to take any and all jobs offered to him. He was in no position to be choosy at first, but more than that, he saw every job as an opportunity to refine his skill and expand his knowledge. When he travels, he avoids junkets and what privileges are available to him as a consequence of his money and celebrity, and takes trains and busses. The most interesting parts of any journey, he tells us, are the borders, where we see the best and worst of a country. This ability to see the best and the worst of a place or person can be found throughout the book, whether he’s writing about Oliver Sacks- whom he clearly admires- or Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe. There are presidents, comedians, authors, writers, and one interesting dominatrix. He writes from Hawaii, Africa, Asia, and Greenland. It’s all immensely well written, and it’s all immensely satisfying.Unlike reading a popular essayist like, say, Bill Bryson, reading the essays in this book won’t make you want to spend time with Theroux. He comes across as a difficult, opinionated person whom, once he has made up his mind, is not likely to listen to arguments from others, and someone who would not hesitate to point out your worst flaws to you. But reading him will make you want to read more Theroux.

There is nothing I didn't like about this book. I love every one of his non fiction books.It is amazing that Mr Theroux is still alive.I would truly love to have lunch with him sometimes. I know he has a place at the Cape as well as I do.

Am a novice and have found this book to be very helpful!

Not what I expected. I was looking for more depth. If I had seen this in the bookstore, I would not have purchased. Did not meet my needs but not worth returning.

This book is so basic that it is worthless. For example, there is only one example on the "if" function and it covers only the if and if ... else formats.There is no index, only a table of contents. I should have checked the number of pages...86 pages cannot begin to cover even the basics of Excel.

Easy to use.

This guide was too simple to be helpful.

Its terrific! Ive looked a long time for this format, and it is 1)super-easy to lookup terms, 2)simple, step-by-step instructions, even for advanced functions. Great reference i wont be without: even charts are de-constructed. Really solid value for the money.

I just wanted to say "THANK YOU". This book is in incredible shape, far beyond the description of "Used - Very Good". It was very well-packed and arrived exactly when I was told it would.The content is stunning, particularly since most of it is in wonderful black and white photos. The prose provides enough information to leave the reader wanting to know more about Rodin and to do more research. However, the photography was clearly the star, which is the reason I purchased it in the first place. I have the biographies and in-depth analyses of his life, work and relationships; what I wanted was beautiful photos of even more beautiful artwork. I got that, in spades.I will definitely be back.

After "The Thinker," Rodin may be best known for "The Kiss" - that moving and elegant tribute to love's physical expression. It's only one of the master's studies of the topic.This book opens with about fifty pages of biographical information, nicely illustrated with small insets, roughly a third of the page count. The real point of this book, however, is its collection of Rodin's art. We first see photographic studies of forty three sculptural works. These include single figures (like "Danaid") as well as couples, including "The Kiss", "The Eternal Idol," "Youth Triumphant," and others that vary in subject and mood. "Torso of Adele" captures one woman's voluptuous grace; "Walking Man" offers a simple statement of masculine power; "Pygmalion and Galatea" depicts a complex feeling that includes lowering oneself before the object of worship. A few black and white photos represent each piece, showing different angles and levels of detail. Unfortunately, the reader is at the mercy of the photographer's choices of views, which don't always depict the details one might want to examine. Choices of lighting and photographic reproduction also obscure some details, leaving the viewer as much tantalized as informed.The end of the book reproduces 75 of Rodin's sketches and watercolor studies. Careful printing on opaque, bright paper brings out even the faint details in many of these works. These images cover a somewhat different range of sensibilites, including sprawling poses that tend towards the salacious. Others (e.g. "Sleeping Girl") depict more innocent views, and yet others (including "Sapphic Couple") go deeper into the erotic range. There's no contradiction between them; each is a point sample of Rodin's broad appreciation of women's beauty.Rainer Crone does not cover the whole of Rodin's work, but doesn't try to. Instead this addresses one crucial segment of the total ouvre, and does so more thoroughly than broader studies can. I saw this book at the CMA and thought I'd write a review since no one has done so yet. This book is very nice for a paperback. Most of the writing, which I didn't really look at, was in the beginning of the book with the rest focusing primarily on reproductions of his sculpture. There were some photos of Rodin and the customary biographical information and a huge amount of reproductions of his work, most of which are good, but some are from angles that are not the best and some of the details are a bit confusing. With work like Rodin's that showcases a balance between the primitive and refined, it is important to get a clear shot in order to understand what it is that you are looking at. Some of the reproductions, while beautiful, are a bit confusing from that standpoint. Otherwise, a good book. I'll probably buy it myself someday, when I'm no longer a starving artist.

Great book for young readers. Honestly, I usually dislike any type of biographies, but this was different. The photos and drawings not only broke up the text and made the reading more inviting, but they were quite interesting in their own right. The many facts, especially direct quotes, of Lincoln were intriguing and some funny. Slavery was a “monstrous injustice.” It was a “cancer” threatening to grow out of control “in a nation originally dedicated to the inalienable rights of man.” Lincoln agreed with others that he was rather homely referring once to his “poor, lean, lank face.” When a rival called him “two-faced” during a political debate, Lincoln replied: “I leave it to my audience If I had another face, do you think I’d wear this one?” Some of the letters included reveal a man of great penmanship and great words. What struck me most throughout the book was the ending. He seemed to be aware that he would die by assassination, and accepted such. “If I wore a shirt of mail, and kept myself surrounded by a bodyguard, it would be all the same. There are a thousand ways of getting at a man if it is desired that he should be killed.” And later he had a dream that he was wandering through the White House but no one was around until he reached the East Room, where a wake was held. When he asked “Who is dead in the White House?” the answer was “The President, he was killed by an assassin.” At that point he woke in his dream. In all, a fascinating look at an ordinary man who lived a more-than-ordinary life, devoting it to leading his loved country. “…I have no other so great (ambition) as that of being truly esteemed of my fellow men, by rendering myself worthy of their esteem.” This book reads more like an adventure than a biography, but contains everything one could hope to learn from a biography.

Great little book - good for elementary age (if you believe in old fashioned education) or Jr High age (if you believe in the dumbed-down public education model we live with today. Quick, easy read, and no "revised" or "rewritten" History in it. Seller is great and would do business with them again.

I bought this book for my son's 11th birthday. He's always been interested in President Lincoln because they have the same birthday (albeit different years!). This book was the last present he opened - after the gameboy, the new game, and several other books. The gameboy went on the table and the book came out. He read for nearly an hour, occasionally stopping to fill me in on tidbits from the book. The book is very interesting reading, even for adults, and is written in such a way to capture the reader's interest from the beginning. I would highly recommend it!

It does say Photobiography... :-\ but still whish it had more text content. Overal I would recommend the book and buy again as a gift for another in the future or for younger children 6 to older...if nothing else it has pictures. My son is using this book for another school project and enjoys the book very much. I have added a star.

This book is a favorite among students of all ages. I first used it in my Children's Literature classes, and the college students often chose this photobiography as their favorite of the semester reads. Recently, I read with fourth graders, and it again appears to be the best. The text is written well, and the photos are varied and rich. It is a win, win for all who purchase it and read the story of our American hero.

Very interesting about the life of Lincoln, and it's not too difficult to read. It gave me more knowledge about our 16th president.

I love this series of books. They are perfect for the YA audience but enjoyable to all ages looking for a sweet romance with a different twist. Nick is hoping to get his life together only to be blindsided by finding his own complement. There is angst as he needs to accept Ash for who he is. I don't like to give spoilers so I won't do that here but I really recommend this book. You should read 1 and 2 before this one but they are all good relaxing reads with an interesting twist on finding "the one."

Nick is working to find himself once he goes to college. Ash is also find himself but in a different way. As their connection grows, both must figure out who they are with each other and what their future is.These books are sweet, love stories with low heat which is the perfect combination for YA books.
