First things first: there is nothing revolutionary or scandalous in the ancient text called "The Gospel of Judas." If the Vatican has a copy in their archives, they are not sitting on it out of fear of the response. This text is unique in its focus on Judas, but in other ways has a great deal in common with other Gnostic texts written in the first few centuries of the Common Era.That being the case, Bart Ehrman -- one of the leaders in his field -- does an excellent job of using the text as an entry into the world of the scholarship of ancient scriptures.I came to the book from a background of having studied such texts (in translation) in both a public graduate school and a seminary, so I ended up skipping over a lot of the background material Ehrman includes for the lay person. It's all very well written and accessible; it was just old news to me.The best part of the book was not, I think, his study of the Gospel of Judas itself, but his use of historical-literary criticism to dig more deeply into what we can reasonably deduce about Judas from the canonical books of the New Testament. It's not a lot -- but Ehrman does a lovely job in taking the reader step-by-step through how a specialist approaches such a question.I would recommend this book to anyone who has any interest in New Testament criticism or who has a romantic or suspicious interest in "lost gospels." This book is an excellent primer on what we do and do not know about early Christianity in its wide variety of forms and how we come it know it.And for those who might wonder: it is not disrespectful of faith. Ehrman makes no theological claims one way or the other. He simply looks at the texts more closely than most people ever will, with the advantage of his decades spent studying the historical, cultural, theological, and literary nature of the era, and communicates his insights in a straightforward, very clear way.

First of all, it is fascinating reading - whether one chooses to believe it or not. The writer provides important information about the gospel itself, the history of early Christianity, examples of what the writers knew or did not know, and much more. It is important to have background material to complete and/or understand how this manuscript came to be. Did the Council at Nicia have a copy of this, or if so, how was it left out of the texts of the Bible? Apparently not, if it was recently discovered. The idea that Judas was born to fulfill God's Will for Jesus is not new to me, and that he was not really a betrayer but someone following God's path, has been presented before. Hope to read more books like this - transcribed manuscripts reading is a passion of mine. To be read with an open mind. Easy to read for a layperson, and to understand the notion of storytelling from the past.At first I thought it would be a direct translation of the manuscript, but having this extra information was helpful.

Professor Ehrman is the finest author of popular books on the New Testament and he continues his remarkable record of churning out engaging and informative books. This one is special as Professor Ehrman was part of an accomplished team of experts assembled by National Geographic that analysed the Gospel of Judas when it's existence first became known to scholars. He has traced a history of this gospel's discovery, given a description of its Gnostic character and its contents and in the most engaging part of the book, given his views on the relationship of Jesus with his apostles and possible reasons why Judas betrayed him. Some parts will be familiar to other readers of Professor Ehrman's prolific output but that is hardly a blemish on the book. Read it and you can almost feel his excitement and passion on probably the most significant Biblical find of our times

I feel like I've been reading this book forever! I started it several months ago, and I was really enjoying it at first. But it seemed to drag a bit in the middle (despite being a pretty short book), and I more or less put it down for a couple of months. Fortunately, it was easy to pick up again; Ehrman writes clearly and explains everything thoroughly, so I didn't feel lost at all. The flip side of this is that the book is pretty repetitive; he emphasizes things and makes sure his point is clear by saying the same thing over and over. This was effective in its way; I feel like I learned a lot from this book and am likely to retain that knowledge. It did make for a slower than necessary reading experience, though.On the whole, I'm glad I read this book; especially as someone with a limited knowledge of Christianity, I found it very informative. People who are more familiar with Christianity in general and early Christianity in particular might find it too simplistic and repetitive, but it worked for me. It's definitely very accessible.

Another superb book written by Dr. Ehrman. It's more recent translation into English by Dr. Ehrman shows Judas as a hero and not a villain. One who did what none of the other apostles had the strength to do. Without his "betrayal" of Jesus, there would be no Christianity. Why? Because without the death and resurrection, there would be nothing for Christians to believe in. Jesus had to die in order for Christianity to happen. His task was to facilitate the miracle that turned the religion into what it is today. Great read.

Ehrman is a scholar and comes at Judas through an historical lens. What is most likely to be true? Great resource for an academic paper. What is most likely historically true may not align with a belief system at all. Faith is the difference. Well written.

very repetitive from Ehrman's other books. More about the discovery of the manuscript than I thought necessary. Pretty much says what you expect.

Erdman is a favorite, but spends too much time on the history of the document (1/2 the book!).

I really wanted to like this book. This book I was most excited for as Maleficent is my favorite villain. And especially after the first book on the Evil Queen was everything I hoped for. It stuck to the Disney movie storyline with a whole new perspective from the evil queen. Maleficent story line, sadly strayed away from Disney’s Sleepjng Beauty story. Focusing more on before the movies storyline and focusing more on new characters created by the author. Spoiler Alert!!—-Im also not a fan of Maleficent being Aurora’s mother. There’s no explanation of how Aurora ends up with the king and queen. You’re to assume the 3 fairy’s brought her to them. But why?! Could they not have children of their own? Were they aware aurora is maleficent’s child? That she’ll have powers one day? Which I also do not care for. I hear the next book about mother Gothel strays even further from Disney’s story also focusing on the authors new characters to lead up to the next book that’s all about said characters. I think I’m going to skip Mother Gothel as well as the next one. If she had only kept Disney’s storyline from the movies we all love and grew up on like her first book of the series.

Huge fan of maleficent but I was somewhat disappointed. The first half was very slow .. it picked up towards the end.

Just like with the other Villain series, this was excellent! The book has more pages and all the beloved characters are back to twist up our ordinary fairy tales. Looking forward to the next in the series in July 2018.The book arrived on time and in perfect condition. Thanks Amazon!

I'm a little upset that I recieved a book with a damaged cover there's scratches and its sticky. Still wont stop me from reading the book its just unfortunate I liked the design for the hardcover book so this isnt what I expected.

I haven't read the book yet but showed up very nicely. If I have problems I'll update this review. I love the series of Valentino's Disney tales. I'm planning on ordering the whole series.

i loved this one. since we dont know all that much about malificent, the author has a lot of freedom to tell her story and this telling was captivating could not put the book down

If you enjoy reading about Disney’s Villians than you will enjoy Mistress of All Evil. It gives you the backstory of how she grew up and the reason she was so revengeful toward Aurora. Fun read.

We (as in Richard and I️) shared multiple events; he had his view and of course I️ had mine yet since they were at the same place and time. Thanks to him, I️ was able to relive these moments via the pages of his book.The rush of emotion, the thoughts that hadn’t been thought of in over 20 plus years all came rushing back en masse. Memories that brought back physical responses; some good and some really bad became part of the thrill while reading this book. Heartbreaking moments, wonderful life altering memories all set to a soundtrack of KROQ. The soundtrack of my “youth” started with Richard Blade and still today he has a reoccurring role via First Wave. My love for music began by listening to you for hours. Tape recording the songs you played and listening to them a million times over. Oh what simple times those were. Not a care in the world. You state in the book that only people in SC can comprehend some of what you wrote about, so true.Thank you for sharing your story with us which, coincidentally intertwines with mine which made reading “World in my Eyes” a truly meaningful act. I️ believe that many others feel the same exact way feeling right now. Emotional, unsettled, nostalgic yet completely elated. I️ shared with my daughter that never had I️ read a book and mind you the list is rather long, that I️ could simultaneously share the experience regarding the topic that was being discussed. Never, had I️ had such a personal connection to any book. You gave me back my youth while reading the book. Brilliantly done Richard.

A fantastic book telling the life story of a very interesting man. Richard Blade is primarily a disc jockey, heard these days on Sirius XM satellite radio's First Wave station, although he has appeared on television many times as a host and broke big in radio with "the World Famous KROQ" in Los Angeles, California. His radio program is high energy, relentlessly upbeat and informative. His book is much the same, although his life has not been without sadness and tragedy. The chapters move quickly, and keep driving you forward to continue reading the book. I found it very difficult to put down for any length of time. We know Richard as a champion of New Wave music from the 1980s, when his radio career REALLY took off. The book is full of interesting notes and anecdotes about all the musical acts, including Spandau Ballet, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, George Michael Morrisey and Berlin. He also talks about his life journey, from spinning records at small parties at Oxford, expanding and traveling and playing at clubs throughout Europe and eventually making his way to the United States.It is also a great story of grit and perseverance, about knowing what you want and doing whatever it takes to reach your goal. He really worked his way up the ladder, and never gave up on his dream even when it seemed far away. He didn't allow himself to be distracted or sidetracked, although he did at least one time allow himself to take the longer path instead of a more direct one. I also like that he is a person that always went above and beyond the call of duty, who didn't just try to do his job well, but tried to grow, to expand, to truly "add value" to whatever project he was working on. When his passion evolved, and his dream of being a DJ on the radio was realized, he sought to grow the brand and types of music that he loved, to expand the audience of the people that listened to it.Blade has a great memory, and a raconteur's ability to tell a great story. Humor is abundant in the book, in the forms of stories well told, but there are some sad stories in there too, stories that I'll admit brought tears to my eyes. He always gives credit where it is due - he speaks well of those that helped him or that worked with him as he achieved his dreams - but always takes the high road. Those that treated him poorly or cut him down aren't mentioned by name; he doesn't use the book as an excuse to settle old scores.I greatly enjoyed this book. The story of a person who came to this country with nothing but a few hundred bucks and a dream, and succeeds is something that never gets old, and a object lesson for everyone. If you are willing to work hard and have a good head on your shoulders, you can succeed. I have the paperback book and got the Kindle edition as well. If you can, get the paper version. There are many great pictures in the book, pictures that (my version, at least) the Kindle cannot reproduce well enough to truly appreciate. However, the paper version checks in at over 500 pages, and the type set is standard - not especially large. Richard has really lived an interesting life, traveled extensively and met a lot of interesting and diverse (love the story about meeting Sir Richard Branson!) people, and he really gave the readers their money's worth. It can be a little heavy to carry around, but it is worth it! And the really interesting thing is that by the end of the book, he isn't up to the current date! He says the book is "to be continued" and I, for one, am really looking forward to reading the continuation! Read the book, listen to his program on the radio (that alone is worth the cost of a satellite subscription!) see the world in Richard's eyes!

We all knew the hardcore new wavers growing up: the ones who knew that Depeche Mode’s “People Are People” album wasn’t a proper release but instead a compilation, who knew that the Go-Go’s printed the words “What we don’t know we make up” on the inner portion of the 45 for “Our Lips Are Sealed”, who frequented the local hotspots like 321, Perkins’ Palace and Florentine Gardens … for them and for those of us not old enough (or in my case, not old enough or cool enough) to go to the clubs but loved the music anyway, Richard Blade was right there with us – on radio station KROQ as well as TV shows such as MV3 and Video One (particularly indispensable for those of us without cable and thus without MTV). I admit I took Mr. Blade for granted – he was always just, well, there!The more you read, though, the more you learn that he wasn’t riding the wave – he helped create it. Several groups/artists credit him specifically with their success and, as we learn in the book, Blade helped curate the soundtrack to our generation (not alone, of course – his dad helped!).If you’d asked me how he achieved his success, I’d probably have said “I don’t know; I imagine he was a big DJ in England and got hired by KROQ, and the rest is history?” Hardly. His rise from DJ’ing small European clubs to partying with Spandau Ballet in Australia was a long and arduous one, meticulously detailed in the book. I got exhausted just reading about it, I can only imagine what living it was like.If you just want the stories about his interactions with the artists, you got ‘em. Sure, you’ll get your DMode, your INXS, your Morrissey, but you’ll also hear about some of the lesser-knowns like Felony (after reading the tragic story of Jeffrey Spry you’ll want to look Richard in the eye like Sean Maguire did to Will Hunting and say “it’s not your fault” again and again). Many of the tales will be revelations to most folks since they took place well before the advent of cell phones – for example, give iPhones to the hundreds in attendance at Mr. J’s one particular night in 1983 and the jaw-dropping story told in the No More Words chapter would have been immediately uploaded to YouTube and become familiar to millions. But I’d certainly never heard it.I can’t recommend this book highly enough – it’s inspirational, confessional, emotional (you’ll never hear Tears For Fears’ “Mad World” the same way again) and, most importantly, highly entertaining. On a personal note – if you get the chance to meet the man, e.g. at a book signing, try to do it – he’s every bit as personable as you’d expect him to be.

Worst book on Keto I've ever seen. I wouldn't pay $2 for this book. Plus there is a major typo. It says the keto formula is 73% carbs and 5% fat. That is completely opposite of what is correct. If someone didn't already understand this diet before they read this book it would lead them astray and they would follow the diet incorrectly. How could they publish this without someone noticing this major typo on page 5? This book does not explain the diet at all. It's just a few terrible recipes. I'm returning for a refund.

I am very disappointed with this book. For a $12.00 book I expected it to be loaded with a ton of helpful information and realistic recipes. It was a nothing very thin little pamphlet. None of your reasons for customer return included the book not being what I expected. Now I learn I’m not going to get a full refund and I have to pay almost $6.00 to return this piece of junk. Total rip-off. I give this book 0 stars!!!!

Subtitled 'Easy Plants for More Beautiful Gardens', this book is a pithy reference for gardeners in urban and suburban areas who are trying to fill shady spots with attractive blooms and foliage. I've had the book for a year and got good results this year using plants I chose, based on this author's advice, last year.The book starts with a short chapter on the basics: soil, hardiness zones, mulching, planting, watering and pests -- one paragraph each. Each of fifty plants then gets one-and-a-half pages (and the print is big) -- a photo, a paragraph of introduction to the plant followed by how and where to grow instructions, a mention of varieties, and a chart that gives zone hardiness, bloom time, light, height and interest. Also of value are sidebars on a wide variety of topics, e.g. planting under trees, winter protection, wildflowers from seeds, propagating by division, woodland planting, coordinating strong color, controlling slugs. These sidebars are made more valuable by their inclusion in the index. There is also a glossary and a hardiness zone map.This is an enjoyable and informative book, but if you are a neophyte you might also want to get a companion book that covers basics more thoroughly, and if you are a truly devoted gardener you might want to get a book that devotes more time to each species and/or discusses more plants.

Amazing gardening book Taylor never disappoints!

I bought this a few years ago because the yard I had was all shade at the time. It was easy to understand with great pictures of all the plants. I used it to help me pick out the best plants for my yard and as I was new at gardening it was worth the money.

Great book.

This and its twin, Taylor's Best Perennials for Sun have been favorites of mine for years. I recently purchased Perennials for Shade because I loaned it to someone, didn't get it back, and I truly missed it. Glad to have it back on my shelf.
